jTV: Forgiveness in Real Life

Virtue: Forgiveness: Showing love to someone who has hurt you.
Main Point: What is forgiveness?
Bible Story: The Unmerciful Servant.
Bible Passage: Matthew 18:21-22
Memory Verse: “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32 (NIV)



WHAT YOU NEED: deck of cards (2)

Start by introducing yourself and welcoming kids to your eGroup. Ask them about their week and interests. Use the following questions to generate discussion:
What’s something cool that happened this week?
What was the best part of your week?
Have you ________ (seen/eaten/listened to/read) any good _________ (movies/TV shows/food/music/books) lately?
What are you looking forward to next week?

Once you have five to six kids begin “jTV.”
Kids can play this game in groups of eight. Use the second deck of cards to start a second group if needed.
Deal the entire deck of cards as evenly as possible to all kids. Kids should look at the cards in their personal deck.
It’s okay if some kids receive fewer cards than others.
Choose a kid to begin play. This kid starts by choosing one card from his or her deck to create a center pile. This pile should be in reach of all kids.
Rotating clockwise, each kid will try to match the card just played.
If a kid can’t play the same card as the center card, he or she loses their turn.
If a kid can play the same card as the center card:
The first kid who can play the same card will lay their card down and say, “j.”
The second kid who can play the same card will lay their card down and say, “T.”
The final kid who can play the same card will lay their card down and say, “V.”
The kid who said “V” will start the next round by laying any card from their personal pile on the center pile.
The first kid to get rid of all the cards in their personal deck wins!



WHAT YOU NEED: Bibles, Livestream scripts (5)

“Welcome to eGroup! My name is _______ and I’m your eGroup leader! As an eGroup we will hang out together during Motion, hear stories from the Bible, learn what it means to live for Jesus, and play games!
This week we start a new series called jTV, where we’ll learn about forgiveness. Even though the Bible was written thousands of years ago, we’re going to livestream the story today and act it out in real life. Let’s dig into God’s Word together now and learn why God wants us to forgive.”

Choose four kids to be the actors and have them stand in front of the eGroup. Assign them each a part and give them each their corresponding script. SEE THE LEADER TIP ON THE LEFT.
The eGroup leader is the narrator. Read the Livestream script aloud while the kids livestream (read and act out) the story.
After finishing the story, let the group review and discuss what happened in the livestream story and what it teaches about forgiveness.
Read today’s Bible story from a Bible with the eGroup.
Have kids sit in a circle with their Bibles and instruct kids to turn to Matthew 18:21-35. NOTE: This may take time, but it helps kids learn skills for reading the Bible on their own. If needed, encourage kids to use the table of contents in their Bible, and then decide if the book is in the Old or New Testament.
Read Matthew 18:21-35 aloud.

“Jesus often used parables, or stories, to give people a simple way to understand how they should live. In this parable, the servant was forgiven by his master, but then refused to forgive his own servant who owed him money.

In this story, Jesus is like the master, and we are the master’s servant. It hurts Jesus when we sin or do wrong things, but Jesus forgave us for all the wrong things, we have done and will ever do. Because we have been forgiven for all the wrong things we do, we need to also show forgiveness when people hurt us.”



WHAT YOU NEED: scenario sheet

Before beginning the activity, use the discussion questions to talk about what forgiveness is and how kids experience and show forgiveness.

Share a time when someone has forgiven you. What did you do that needed forgiveness?
How does it feel to be forgiven?
What does it mean to forgive someone? (To show love to someone who has hurt you or made you angry. It doesn’t mean the person’s actions were right or good, but we show kindness in our actions and attitude anyway.)
What are ways we can show forgiveness, instead of just using words?
When God forgives us, does it mean He thinks what we did was ok? (No. He doesn’t like the wrong things we do, but when He forgives us, He wants us to live differently and make good choices.)
Why does God ask us to forgive others? (Because we all do wrong things, but Jesus took the punishment for our sins and died on the cross for us.)

Explain kids will hear a scenario and must determine if forgiveness is being shown in that situation.
Read the scenarios from the scenario sheet.
If kids think the scenario is someone showing forgiveness, they should “like” it by giving a thumbs up.
If kids think the scenario is someone who is not showing forgiveness, they should “dislike” it by giving a thumbs down.
For each of these situations, discuss what a forgiving response(s) could be.

“Forgiving others doesn’t just mean telling someone we forgive them, it also means showing them by how we treat them. This week, remember to show forgiveness to those around you, even when it may be difficult.”


WHAT YOU NEED: eKidz Prayer Journal (or eKidz Prayer Journal page), pen

“Today we learned we should forgive others because God forgave us first. When you choose to forgive, you can see God do great things through you!
Before we can forgive others, we need to ask God to forgive us. Think of something you may need to ask God to forgive you for. Maybe it’s because you lied to a friend, made fun of someone, or were disrespectful to a parent or teacher.”

Spend some time in prayer. Remind kids of the the F.A.S.T prayer model we learned in January: focus on God, ask for what you need, say you’re sorry, and take the right path/ask for God’s help. Give kids one minute to individually pray to God, and then close in prayer.

SUGGESTED PRAYER: “God, thank You for loving us so much that You sent your Son, Jesus, to die for all the wrong things we do. Help us to show the same love that You showed us to others. Show us who we need to forgive, and also who we need to ask for forgiveness from this week. We love You. In Jesus name, amen.”

“I am going to write your name in our eKidz Prayer Journal. This week I will pray for you to live God’s way by asking Him for forgiveness and by forgiving others.”

Write down what kids share in your eKidz Prayer Journal. Take your eKidz Prayer Journal home with you and pray for your kids throughout the week.


WHAT YOU NEED: Bibles, Bible tool kits, deck of cards (2), Face Off challenge sheet

“Our Bible verse, Ephesians 4:32, tells us that we should forgive others. Forgiveness means showing love to someone who has hurt you. Because God first forgave us, we can forgive others.”

Read the verse out loud: “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32
Help kids look up the memory verse in their Bibles. Encourage them to use tools from the Bible tool kit to mark the verse in their Bible. Tell kids who didn’t bring a Bible they will receive a memory verse card during the Bring It! Challenge so they can practice it at home.
Ask kids if there are any words or phrases they don’t understand and explain them as needed.
Choose a memory verse activity: “Face Off” or “Verse Practice.”

Kids can play this game in groups of four to eight. Use the second deck of cards to start a second group if needed.
Deal the cards as evenly as possible to all kids. Kids should not look at the cards in their personal deck.
All kids will turn over a card at the same time from the top of their deck.
The kids with the highest and lowest card will face off to win all the cards turned over for that round.
Use the Face Off challenge sheet to call out one challenge for the two kids to complete. The first kid to complete the challenge wins the round and all the cards. Have them add the cards to the bottom of their deck.
Continue for each round.
Play as time allows. The kid with the most cards (or all the cards) wins!

Use the following methods to help kids practice the memory verse:

REPEAT AFTER ME: Have kids repeat phrases of the verse after you.

PAIR UP: Have kids pair up to practice the verse together.

MOTIONS: Come up with motions to represent phrases in the verse. Practice it together.
