THE FINDERS: GOLDEN CHRISTMAS

Week 1: December 12/13

 eGROUP LESSON PLAN

reACT

Responding to the gifts we’ve been given

LESSON FOCUS

How we reACT to the gift of family.

MEMORY VERSE:  1 JOHN 4:10 (NIRV)

Here is what love is. It is not that we loved God. It is that he
loved us and sent his Son to give his life to pay for our sins.

BIBLE STORY

Zechariah, Elizabeth, Mary, and Joseph

Luke 1:11-66

ENGAGE

ENGAGE starts 20 minutes before the worship experience begins. (4:40, 9:10, 11:10)

ENGAGE
Engage is a time to welcome kids to your eGroup with a fun activity to help them feel comfortable and get to know each other.

TIME
30 MINUTES

DO: Start by introducing yourself and welcoming kids to the eGroup. Ask them about their week and interests. Once you have five to six kids begin the Engage activity.

SPOT IT: “FIND IT FIRST” HOLIDAY EDITION

SUPPLIES

SPOT IT CARDS (1 FOOL’S GOLD CARD IN EACH DECK)

FIND IT FIRST – VERSION 1 (TWO TO EIGHT PLAYERS)

  • OBJECT: The object of the game is to collect the most cards.
  • SET UP: Have players sit in a circle. Shuffle the cards and deal one card face-up to each player. Place the remaining cards face down in the center of the group to form a draw pile.
    • Flip over the top card from the draw pile. Players try to be the first to find the ONE matching symbol appearing on both the center card and on their own card. The first player to do so should call it out (ex: “Lion!”) then take the center card and place it face-up on top of their flipped card, building a personal pile.
    • The first player to find the fool’s gold card must call out, “FOOL’S GOLD.” The first player to call it out gets to take a card from any player they choose.
    • Players will continue to use the top card of their personal pile to find a match with the revealed draw pile card. Repeat this process each time a new draw pile card is revealed. Play continues until no cards remain in the draw pile. The player with the most cards is the winner!

FIND IT FIRST – VERSION 2 (TWO TO EIGHT PLAYERS)

  • OBJECT: The object of the game is to have the least amount of cards after all rounds have been played. This is accomplished by getting rid of cards each round.
  • SET UP: Have players sit in a circle. Shuffle the cards and deal one card face down to each player. Set aside the remaining cards to use later. Decide how many rounds to play (between 4 and 8).
    • At the same time, players turn over the card in their hand, holding the card flat and steady in their palm so everyone can see. If players find a match between their card and another player’s card, he/she must call it out. (example: “Banana!”)
    • The player to call it out first places their card on top of matching player’s card and is now out for the round. (NOTE: Players with more than one card only look at their top card.) The round continues until one player ends up with all of the cards. The player loses the round and places the cards in a personal pile.
    • The first player to find the fool’s gold card must call out “FOOL’S GOLD.” The first player to call it out will give away their card to any player and is out for that round OR if they have a personal pile from losing a previous round they can give away their pile to any player.
    • Play as many rounds as decided at the beginning. Each round the losing player keeps the cards.
    • After all rounds have been played the player with the least amount of cards wins!

MEMORY VERSE

BEGIN ACTIVITY 10 MINUTES AFTER THE START OF THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE (5:10, 9:40, 11:40)

MEMORY VERSE

During this time introduce your eGroup kids to the series virtue and memory verse. Spend time teaching and practicing the memory verse.

SUGGESTED TIME

5-8 MINUTES

SUPPLIES

BIBLE PENS, GOLD STICKY NOTES, MEMORY VERSE CARDS

SAY: “Welcome to eGroup! My name is _______ and I’m your eGroup leader! As an eGroup we will hang out together during Motion, hear stories from the Bible, learn what it means to live for Jesus, and play games!

We have been following The Finders as they’ve learned about responsibility, and in the midst of their hunt for Goldman, The Finders have taken a Christmas break to watch some of their favorite Christmas specials.

At Christmas, we give each other gifts to celebrate the gift God gave us – Jesus. When you get a gift for Christmas or even your birthday, you don’t put it back in the box and forget about it – you use it! During The Finders: Golden Christmas, we’re going to learn how we can use the gifts God has given us and reACT: APPRECIATE the gift, CHOOSE what to do next, and TAKE the next step.

Doing what the Bible says is one way we reACT to God loving us and sending us the gift of Jesus. We can do that by reading the Bible and learning what it says. Let’s memorize 1 John 4:10, our series memory verse, to remember why God gave us Jesus.

DO:

  • Read the verse out loud:

Here is what love is. It is not that we loved God. It is that he
loved us and sent his Son to give his life to pay for our sins.
1 John 4:10 (NIRV)

  • Help kids look up the memory verse in their Bibles. Encourage children to use the Bible pens to highlight the verse in their Bible and a gold sticky note to mark the spot in their Bible. Give a memory verse card to kids who did not bring their Bibles.
  • As time allows, practice the verse with your group.

STOP: TRANSITION TO LARGE GROUP

CONNECT

CHRISTMAS GIFTS

CONNECT ACTIVITY: Kids will connect the idea of reACTing to the gifts we’ve been given with the weekly Christmas episode and connect with each other. Learn the names of your eGroup kids and try to learn something about each one. Let them learn about you!

SUGGESTED TIME

5-8 MINUTES

SUPPLIES

GOLDEN CHRISTMAS GIFT BAG (2), GIFT CARDS (2 SETS)

SAY: “Those were some pretty old VHS tapes The Finders found in Rosie’s attic. I’m not sure I’ve ever head the Christmas story quite like that from Zechariah or Mary, either. I can’t wait till next week to see the next favorite Christmas special The Finders have for us!

Watching that Christmas special got me thinking about gifts. If you watched closely, you saw some amazing and some not so amazing Christmas gifts. Let’s see how you reACT to receiving one of the gifts from the Christmas special.”

DO:

  • Place one set of gift cards in each Golden Christmas gift bag.
  • Spilt your eGroup into two groups and have each group sit around a Golden Christmas gift bag.
  • Have each group pass the Golden Christmas gift bag around the circle and allow each kid to choose a gift card from the Golden Christmas gift bag.
  • Once all kids have a gift card have them introduce themselves to their group and read the gift they received. Have them reACT to the gift by giving a thumbs up or thumbs down.

SAY: “Those were some really interesting gifts, but someone who gives the BEST gifts is God. He is the best gift giver of all time! Let’s learn more about the gifts He has given us and how we can reACT to those gifts.”

GROW

MINING FOR GOLD | LUKE 1:11-66

BIBLE STORY ACTIVITY: Kids will mine the Bible for information to learn how to reACT to the gifts God has given us.

SUGGESTED TIME

8-12 MINUTES

SUPPLIES

BIBLES, PENS, BIBLE STORY CARD (BACK OF MEMORY VERSE CARD), LEADER SHEET

SAY: “The Finders have been surrounded by a lot of gold lately, including the presents under Hannah’s Christmas tree. Gold is REALLY valuable. A long time ago, people used to spend their whole lives searching for gold because it was so valuable! We have something that’s more valuable than gold and it’s the Bible! The Bible is like a gold mine, full of valuable and true information to help us know what Jesus says and how to live.

Let’s go mining for gold in our Bibles and see what the Bible says about how we can reACT to the gift of family.”

DO:

  • Have kids sit in a circle with their Bibles. Instruct kids to turn to Luke 1:11 in their Bibles. NOTE: This may take time, but it helps them learn skills for reading the Bible on their own.
  • Kids who do not have a Bible will use the Bible Story card (back of the Memory Verse card) they received during the Memory Verse activity. All the Bible passages are on the Bible Story card.
  • Use the leader sheet and your Bible to read the Bible passage out loud, encouraging children to follow along in their Bibles or Bible Story cards as you read.

SAY: “God blessed Zechariah and Elizabeth and Mary and Joseph with the gift of family. When we receive a gift, we need to reACT to it. We need to APPRECIATE the gift, CHOOSE what to do, and TAKE the next step.”

  • ASK:
  • Who were the people who reACTed in the Bible story? (Zechariah, Elizabeth, and Mary)
  • How did each person reACT to the gift of family? (At first Zechariah didn’t believe the gift God gave him and he doubted. After John was born, Zechariah praised God for giving Him a son. Both Elizabeth and Mary thanked God for blessing them with a baby boy.)

GROW

THE GIFT EXCHANGE

DISCUSSION ACTIVITY: Kids will reACT to the gift of family in their own lives.

SUGGESTED TIME

8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES

GIFT EXCHANGE CARDS (GREEN SET AND RED SET), PENS

SAY: “The books of the Bible in the Old Testament promised God would send a Savior, and that Savior was Jesus! God sent us Jesus in the form of a baby to one day save us from our sins so we could live in heaven with Jesus. Not only was Jesus a gift to Mary and Joseph as his son, but Jesus was a gift to all of us, too. God gave us Jesus, and He also gave each of us a family. Let’s see how we can reACT to the gift of family God has given us.”

DO:

  • Divide kids into two groups – the green team and the red team.
  • Give each person on the green team a green gift exchange card and each person the red team a red gift exchange card. Give each kid a pen.
  • Have kids fill out their gift exchange card:
  • LINE 1 – FAMILY MEMBER: Write the first name of a family member.
  • LINE 2 – RELATION: Write how that person is related to you. (ex. uncle,  grandma, mom, sister)
  • LINE 3 – ACTION: Write an action this person does for you. (ex. making dinner, fixing things, mowing the lawn, washing clothes, helping with homework)
  • Have kids fold their gift exchange card and exchange it with someone on the other team. Kids can CHOOSE to keep this new card or exchange it with someone on either team.
  • After all exchanges have been made, have teams sit in two circles with the gift exchange cards in the center of each circle.
  • Have a team send one person to choose a gift exchange card from the other team’s pile of cards and act out the action on the card. If the teams guesses the action correctly, the team will receive one point. After the team guesses correctly, use the card to ask: How can you reACT to the gift of family if your [name of RELATION] [name of ACTION] for you? (Ex. How can you reACT if your uncle helps you with your homework?) Encourage teams to discuss how they can reACT to the gift of family. Teams will earn 10 points if they can reACT to the situation.
  • Allow the other team to choose a gift exchange card and act out the action, then discuss how to reACT to the information on the gift exchange card.
  • Continue for three to five rounds.

SAY: “By reACTing to the gifts God has given us, we show God we are thankful. We can show God we are thankful by reACTing to the gift of family!”

SUGGESTED TIME

8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES

eKIDZ PRAYER JOURNAL, PENS, GIFT EXCHANGE CARDS, GOLDEN CHRISTMAS GIFT BAG

DO:

  • Place the gift exchange cards in the Golden Christmas gift bag.
  • The goal of the game is to not be the last person to reACT to the card. The color of the card chosen will determine the reACTion:
  • GREEN CARDS: Kids must reACT by completing 10 jumping jacks.
  • RED CARDS: Kids must reACT by giving a high five to three other people.
  • For each round choose a card from the bag and hold it high in the air. Kids must reACT by completing the action. The last kid to reACT is out and will sit down.
  • Begin the game by having all kids stand up. Choose a gift exchange card from the Golden Christmas gift bag.
  • Continue until only one kid with the fastest reACTions remains!
