eGROUP LESSON PLAN

WEEK 1: FEBRUARY 27/28

IDENTITY
Knowing who God says I am.

MAIN POINT
I am chosen.

MEMORY VERSE: 1 PETER 2:9
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

ENGAGE

Engage is a time to welcome kids to your eGroup with a fun activity to help them feel comfortable and get to know each other.

TIME
30 MINUTES

DO: Start by introducing yourself and welcoming kids to the eGroup. Ask them about their week and interests. Once you have five to six kids begin the Engage activity.

SPEED ART

SUPPLIES
TAPPLE GAME, WHITE PAPER, PENS

DO: Play “Speed Art.”

Have kids sit in a circle. Give each kid a few pieces of paper and a pen.
For each round, kids start the timer by pressing the red button in the center of Tapple, pressing down one letter on the game, and passing the game around the circle.
Before the game can be passed to the next player, the player holding it has to draw an object on their paper which starts with the letter tapped.
If the timer runs out before a player can draw an object, the player collects all pieces of paper drawn on during that round.
As needed, give kids more paper and start the next round.
When all letters have been pressed, reset Tapple by pushing the yellow tabs on the game.
The kid who has collected the least amount of paper wins!

SC∙ART∙TERGORIES

SUPPLIES
TAPPLE GAME, WHITE PAPER, PENS

DO: Play “Sc∙art∙tegories.”

Have kids sit in a circle. Give each kid a few pieces of paper and a pen.
For each round, choose one kid to start the timer by pressing the red button in the center of Tapple and pressing down a letter of their choice.
Kids will draw as many objects on their paper starting with the letter tapped before the timer runs out.
When times run out, kids, in turn, will show and name their pictures out loud. Kids receive a point only if their pictures are not the same as any other player’s pictures.
Continue for a few rounds. The kid with the highest combined score from all rounds wins!

 

MEMORY VERSE

During this time introduce your eGroup to their eGroup team.

SUGGESTED TIME

SUPPLIES
BIBLE PENS, RED POST IT NOTES, MEMORY VERSE CARDS

SAY: “Welcome to eGroup! My name is _______ and I’m your eGroup leader! As an eGroup we will hang out together during Motion, hear stories from the Bible, learn what it means to live for Jesus, and play games!

This week we begin a new series called (Un)Qualified. We are all given labels by the people around us. Maybe we’ve been called smart, or wimpy, or boring, or funny, or athletic, or weird, or stupid, or pretty, or you fill in the blank. We often let those words from others, as well what we think of ourselves, determine who we are or how we should act, but our real identity should come from understanding how God sees us.

We all wrestle with who we are and who God says we are meant to be. We feel unqualified or not good enough. But God loves unqualified people. God uses unqualified people. And when we know who God says we are, God can use us to do big things. A verse in the Bible, 1 Peter 2:9, tells us who God says we are. Let’s memorize this verse to help us remember each of us is chosen by God.”

DO:
Read the verse out loud:

Help kids look up the memory verse in their Bibles. Encourage children to use the Bible pens to highlight the verse in their Bible and a red sticky note to mark the spot in their Bible. Give a memory verse card to kids who did not bring their Bibles.
As time allows, practice the verse with your group. You can use the following methods to help kids learn the memory verse:
REPEAT AFTER ME: Have kids repeat the words after you.
PAIR UP: After practicing the verse as a group, have kids pair up to practice the verse.
MOTIONS: Come up with motions to help remember the verse as a group. Practice it together.

 

UNQUALIFIED PEOPLE

CONNECT ACTIVITY: Kids will connect the idea of being unqualified with familiar faces and their own lives.

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
SKETCH PADS, COVER STICKERS, SHARPIE MARKERS (3), (UN)QUALIFIED CARDS, GLUE STICKS (3)

SAY: “How many of you would consider yourself an artist? (Allow responses). Did you see the illustration Scott the artist did while Mr. Frank was teaching us about Moses? During (Un)qualified you’ll all become artists and get your own sketch pad, like Scott’s, to use as we learn to know who God says we are.”

DO:
Give each kid a sketch pad and cover sticker.
Before kids place the cover sticker on the front of their sketch pad, have them use the Sharpie marker to write their name on the sticker. [NOTE: Stickers should only be placed on the front cover (on the outside) of the sketch pad.]

SAY: “It may be hard to believe, but everyone feels unqualified or like they are not good enough. Let’s take a look at some people you may know who felt unqualified.”

DO:
Have each kid choose an (Un)Qualified card. You can place the cards in the center of the circle, hold the cards in your hand like a deck of cards, or give each kid a card.
Have kids glue their (Un)Qualified card on the second page of their sketch pad then find kids who have the same (Un)Qualified card as them and sit together in a circle.
Once kids are sitting together have them introduce themselves to their group.

DO:
Have kids read the sentence description on the (Un)Qualified card then discuss the questions on their card as a group. Walk around to monitor groups and ensure groups are engaged in discussion.
After groups have discussed all four questions, have each group show the person on their (Un)Qualified card and read the sentence description.

 

BIBLE ARTISTS

BIBLE STORY ACTIVITY: Kids will hear and illustrate the Bible story.

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
LEADER SHEET, SKETCH PADS, BIBlE STORY CARDS, GLUE STICKS (3), COLORED PENCILS (24), PENCIL SHARPENERS (3)

SAY: “Everyone feels unqualified or like they are not good enough. But to be qualified God’s way, we need to see ourselves how God sees us. The Bible is full of true stories which help us know who God says we are. Let’s check out the story of Moses’ birth from the Bible. By himself, Moses wasn’t qualified to do anything special, but because God chose him, he would become one of the most important leaders in the Bible!”

DO:
Have kids sit in a circle with their sketch pads. Give each kid a Bible story card.
Have kids glue their Bible story card on the third page of their sketch pads.
Explain kids are artists who will help each other draw the picture on their Bible story card. Artists will draw on their Bible story card while listening as you read the Bible story. Each time kids hear, “ARTIST SWAP,” they will pass their sketch pad to the left. This artist will continue drawing, working to illustrate the Bible story.
Place the colored pencils in the center of the group for the artists to use.
Use the leader sheet to read about Moses’ birth.

SAY: “There was something special about Moses; when his mother saw him, she called him, “fine,” meaning he was good and strong appearance. He was special; chosen by God. Before Moses was born, God thought about him. And guess what? He thought about each of us, too! Ephesians 1:4 says, “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.”

Before He even created the world, God thought about us! God loves us so much and we are special to Him. You are so special to God – He CHOSE you! We are so special to God he desires to have a relationship with us. God sent Jesus to earth to take our punishment so we could have a relationship with Him. Sin keeps us from having a relationship with God, but Jesus took our punishment by dying on the cross.”

 

WHO AM I?

APPLICATION ACTIVITY: Kids will learn God still chooses them even though He knows everything about them! Nothing they can do can keep God from loving them and thinking they are special.

SUGGESTED TIME
10-12 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
SKETCH PADS, WHO AM I? CARDS, GLUE STICKS (3), PENS

SAY: “God knows everything about you. How many times you say the word “the” in a day, how many hairs you have on your head, and even how many times your heart beats in a minute! We might not have time today in eGroup to know each other like God knows us, but we can learn a few things about each other. Let’s play, Who Am I?”

DO:
Have kids glue a Who Am I? card on the fourth page of their sketch pads.
Give kids a pen and two minutes to answer the questions on the Who Am I? card.
As kids finish, have them place their sketch pad, open so the Who Am I? card is showing, in the center of the group.
After all sketch pads are in the center, play Who Am I?
Choose one sketch pad and read aloud the six facts. The group gets three changes to guess who is being described. Whether or not the group guesses correctly, SAY, “God chose [insert kid’s name]!”
Return the sketch pad to the kid. This kid will choose one sketch pad from the center and read aloud the six facts.
Continue as time allows. Return unused sketch pads to their owners.

SAY: “Sometimes we treat other people based on the things we know about them, like the things we just learned: ‘She’s pretty, I’ll talk to her.’ ‘He is really good at soccer, I need to make sure I’m on his team at recess.’ or ‘They are really smart, I want to be friends with them.’ But that’s not how God treats us.

Today we learned a lot of things about each other, but God knows all those things and more! He knows everything about you; the good things, the secret things, the things you are afraid to tell others, but He still chooses you and wants to have a relationship with you! Remember … you are special, God loves you, and He chose you.”

 

I AM CHOSEN
PRAYER AND GAME ACTIVITY: Prayer is an important way to share Jesus with passion. Spend time in prayer with your eGroup before beginning the game.

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
eKIDZ PRAYER JOURNAL, PENS

SAY: “Before we begin our last activity, let’s pray together.”

SUGGESTED PRAYER: “Dear God, thank You so much for choosing us. Thank You for loving us and taking our punishment by dying on the cross. When we feel unqualified or like we are not good enough, help us remember we are special and chosen by You. We love you. Amen!”

 

BRING IT! CHALLENGE

OVERVIEW: During (Un)Qualified kids can collect letters from UNQUALIFIED for attending Motion, brining their Bible, and saying the series memory verse. Kids who collect all the letters will earn an (Un)Qualified prize pack!

TIME
5 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
SKETCH PADS, LETTER STICKERS

SAY: “When we know who God says we are, God can use us to do big things. Each weekend during (UN)Qualified, learn more about the person God says you are by coming to church and bringing it!

DO:
Have kids turn to the first page in their sketch pad.
Review the information on the Bring It! card.
Explain how to earn letter stickers:
attend Motion = 1 letter sticker
bring your Bible = 2 letter stickers
recite the memory verse = 2 letter stickers
Award letter stickers to kids who attended Motion, brought a Bible, or recited the memory verse.

SAY: “Make sure to bring your sketch pad and come to Motion each week to earn more letters to spell (Un)Qualified! Collect all the letters to earn an (Un)Qualified prize pack!”
