Finders VI: The Case Of Camp Jupiter

Virtue: Cooperation: Working together to do more than you can do alone.
Main Point: We can work together to change someone’s life.
Bible Story: Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man
Bible Passage: Luke 5:17-26
Memory Verse: “Two people are better than one. They can help each other in everything they do.” Ecclesiastes 4:9 (NIrV)

ENGAGE

CAMPFIRE STORIES

WHAT YOU NEED: green dice (1), red dice (1), blue dice (1), story starter cards

WHAT YOU DO:
Start by introducing yourself and welcoming kids to your eGroup. Ask them about their week and interests. Use the following questions to generate discussion:
What’s something cool that happened this week?
What was the favorite part of your week?
Have you ________ (seen/eaten/listened to/read) any good _________ (movies/TV shows/food/music/books) lately?
What are you looking forward to next week?

Once you have five to six kids begin playing “Campfire Stories.”
Seat kids in a circle.
Explain the eGroup will work together to tell a story.
Turn over a story starter card and read the story starter sentence.
Encourage the kid beside you to roll the three dice, then continue the story you started by adding a sentence containing at least one of the objects shown on the dice.
Continue around the circle with kids rolling the dice and then adding to the story using the objects shown on the dice.
Once kids end that story or lose interest in it, start a new story by turning over a new story starter card and begin again.

BIBLE STORY ACTIVITY

CAMP JUPITER SCAVENGER HUNT

WHAT YOU NEED: Bible, camp maps (2), question sheet (1)

WHAT YOU SAY:
“Welcome to eGroup! My name is _______ and I’m your eGroup leader! As an eGroup we will hang out together during Motion, hear stories from the Bible, learn what it means to live for Jesus, and play games!
This is week five of our series Finders VI: The Case of Camp Jupiter, where we’re learning the importance of cooperation. Let’s dig into God’s Word together now and see a great example of cooperation!

WHAT YOU DO:
Have kids sit in a circle with their Bibles and instruct kids to turn to Luke 5. NOTE: This may take time, but it helps kids learn skills for reading the Bible on their own. If needed, encourage kids to use the table of contents in their Bible and then decide if the book is in the Old or New Testament.
Read Luke 5:17-26 aloud.
Divide kids into two teams and give each team a camp map.
Explain kids will race to find the answer to the Bible story questions on the camp map.
Each location on the map is labeled with the location name and a Bible story answer.
The first kid to find the correct answer should yell out the name of the location where the Bible story answer is found.
One at a time, ask each question on the question sheet. Encourage kids to race to find the correct answer and call out the location name.
Give a point to the first team to call out the correct location name. The team with the most points at the end wins!

WHAT YOU SAY:
“The friends in the story had to cooperate to get the paralyzed man to Jesus. They worked together to carry him to the house on the mat, they worked together to come up with another plan when they couldn’t get through the door, and they worked together again to lower the man safely through the roof to Jesus. Because they were willing to continue working together, their friend got to Jesus and was healed! When we are willing to work together with others, we can change someone else’s life, too.”

COOPERATION RELAY

WHAT YOU NEED: friend mat (4), painters’ tape (1)

WHAT YOU DO:
• Divide kids into groups of four. Assign each kid on each team a number, one through four.
• Give each group a friend mat.
• Use the painters’ tape to create a start line and a finish line at 
opposite ends of your eGroup space and send groups to 
stand at the start line.
• Explain each group will compete to get their “friend” on the 
mat from one side of the space to the other side as fast as they can. However, kids will have a special rule about how they can move based on the number you gave them!
Kid 1 can only use 1 leg.
Kid 2 can’t use their hands.
Kid 3 must keep both hands above their head at all times.
Kid 4 has no restrictions.
• Each kid in the group must be touching the friend mat in some way at all times.
• If kids drop their “friend” on the way across, they must pick the friend up and start over.
• Signal kids to start the race and watch to make sure kids are following the rules and using only the allowed body parts to transport their “friend.”
• The team that reaches the finish line first wins!

WHAT YOU SAY:
“It took time and effort to figure out how to move your ‘friend,’ but when you worked together you were able to move him to the other side, just like the friends in our Bible story today got the paralyzed man to Jesus. When you’re willing to cooperate with others to help people learn about Jesus, you could change someone’s life, too!”

Discussion Questions:
“How has your life changed as you’ve learned more about Jesus?”
“Why is it important to help other people learn about Jesus?”
“What are some ways you could cooperate with people in your life to help others learn about Jesus?”
“How could it change someone else’s life when they know Jesus?”

JOURNAL AND PRAYER

WHAT YOU NEED: eKidz Prayer Journal (or eKidz Prayer Journal page), pen

WHAT YOU SAY:
“Today we learned we can work together to change someone’s life. When you choose to work together, you can see God do great things through you!
I want you to share the name of one person whose life would change if you helped them learn about Jesus. I’m going to write your name and what you share in our eKidz Prayer Journal so I can pray for you as you do God’s work this week.”

WHAT YOU DO:
Write down what kids share in your eKidz Prayer Journal. Take your eKidz Prayer Journal home with you and pray for your kids throughout the week.
SUGGESTED PRAYER:
“God, thank You for giving each of us the privilege of helping others learn who You are and how much You love us. Help us notice the people around us whose lives would change if they knew You, and show us how we can cooperate with others to show them Your love. Thank You for giving us friends and family to help us do more than we could do alone. We love You. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

MEMORY VERSE

WHAT YOU NEED: Bibles, grid coloring sheets, black crayons, die, colored crayons, grid coloring sheet key

WHAT YOU SAY:
“Our Bible verse, Ecclesiastes 4:9, tells us we should work together and help each other. When we work together, we can accomplish so much more than we can on our own!”

WHAT YOU DO:
Read the verse out loud: “Two people are better than one. They can help each other in everything they do.” Ecclesiastes 4:9
Help kids look up the memory verse in their Bibles. Encourage children to use tools from the Bible tool kit to mark the verse in their Bible. Tell kids who didn’t bring a Bible they will receive a game board with the memory verse on it at the end of the worship experience so they can remember to practice it at home.
Choose one of the memory verse activities: “Mystery Picture” or “Verse Practice.”
MYSTERY PICTURE
Give each kid a grid coloring sheet and a black crayon.
Explain kids will try to figure out what the mystery picture is by coloring the boxes on the grid sheet according to your instructions.
Roll the die. Instruct kids to use a black crayon to color that number of words from the memory verse on the grid coloring sheet. Kids should ONLY be coloring words from the memory verse.
eGL Tip: Allow kids to keep Bibles open to the memory verse so they can look back at the words in the verse as needed. Kids may also refer to the verse on their game boards.
Continue rolling the die and telling kids how many words from the memory verse to color with their black crayon.
Once all words from the memory verse have been colored, encourage kids to guess what they think the mystery picture might be.
Show kids the key at the bottom of the page. Encourage kids to color the other boxes on the grid according to the instructions in the key. As kids color, continue to allow kids to guess what the mystery picture is.
Before returning to Large Group, show kids the grid coloring sheet key so they can see what the mystery picture is. Encourage kids to take their coloring sheets home and finish coloring on their own.
VERSE PRACTICE
Use the following methods to help kids practice the memory verse:
REPEAT AFTER ME: Have kids repeat each phrase of the verse after you
PAIR UP: Have kids pair up to practice the verse together.
MOTIONS: Come up with motions to represent phrases in the verse. Practice it together.
