WEEK 3: MAY 21/22
Standing up for what is right, even when others don’t.
When you stand for what’s right, you can stand up for others.
MEMORY VERSE: JAMES 4:17
If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.
Daniel Interprets a Dream
Engage is a time to welcome kids to your eGroup with a fun activity to help them feel comfortable and get to know each other.
DO: Start by introducing yourself and welcoming kids to your eGroup. Ask them about their week and interests. Use the following questions to generate discussion:
What’s something cool that happened this week?
What was the favorite part of your week?
Have you ________ (seen/eaten/listened to/read) any good _________ (movies/TV shows/food/music/books) lately?
What are you looking forward to next week?
Once you have five to six kids begin the Engage activity.
DANCE CARDS, TOKENS, SAND TIMER, PLAYLIST (download on your electronic device), SCORE CARD, PEN
SAY: “During Star Search we’ll watch a group of talented kids audition for a spot on the TV show Star Search. Rosie, the main character, is a very talented dancer. Let’s see how your dance moves compare to hers!”
Explain players will dance out words from the dance cards to earn points. Points can be earned just for dancing, too! The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.
Form a “dance” circle and place the dance cards in the center of the circle.
Give each player two tokens. During a player’s turn, other players can toss one token into the dance circle if they really like the dance moves. Each token thrown is worth one point.
NOTE: At the end of the game, any player with tokens in his or her possession loses five points for each token. This encourages players to support and compliment each other.
Choose one player to dance first. After that plays moves to the left.
Turn over the sand timer and play the Dance Charades Playlist from your electronic device. This is the only approved playlist allowed – please do not play any personal music. The player will choose a dance card and dance what is on the card while the other players try to guess what the player is dancing. If someone guesses the word, the player will draw another card and keep dancing to earn more points. Each card guessed correctly is worth one point.
At the end of the player’s turn, add up the total points (dance cards and tokens) and record on the score card. Place the used dance cards and tokens in a discard pile.
Continue as time allows.
During this time introduce your eGroup to the series virtue and memory verse. Spend time teaching and practicing the memory verse.
SAY: “Welcome to eGroup! My name is _______ and I’m your eGroup leader! As an eGroup we will hang out together during Motion, hear stories from the Bible, learn what it means to live for Jesus, and play games!
In our Star Search series we are learning about conviction from Rosie from The Finders. When Rosie hears about auditions for the popular TV show Star Search, she is faced with an identity crisis when she has to decide the act she will put together. But while the most popular girl in the school, Tiffany, is pressuring her to be someone else entirely, Rosie’s friend Tyson tries to help her be true to herself. Will Rosie show conviction and take a stand for what’s right or give in to pressure from others?
Conviction means to stand up for what’s right, even when others don’t. The best place to find out how to show conviction is God’s Word. Showing conviction might be difficult at times, but James 4:17 encourages us to keep going even when we’re tired of standing up and doing what is right. When you know what God says, it makes it easier to figure out when and how you should stand for what’s right. Let’s memorize this verse to help us remember to stand for what is right.
Read the verse out loud:
If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them. James 4:17
Help kids look up the memory verse in their Bibles. Encourage children to use the pens to underline the verse in their Bible.
As time allows, practice the verse with your group. You can use the following methods to help kids learn the memory verse:
REPEAT AFTER ME: Have kids repeat the words after you.
PAIR UP: After practicing the verse as a group, have kids pair up to practice the verse.
MOTIONS: Come up with motions to help remember the verse as a group. Practice it together.
BIBLE STORY ACTIVITY: Kids will learn from times in Daniel’s life when he stood up and showed conviction by taking a stand for what was right.
BIBLES, SCRIPTURE CARDS, BIBLE STORY CARD, PENS
SAY: “During Star Search we are going to look at a group of people who showed conviction throughout their whole lives. We’ve been reading about Daniel and three of his friends who showed conviction and stood up to a king named Nebuchadnezzar. Today we’ll read that the king has had a strange dream and has no idea what it means. When his advisors can’t explain it either, he decides to put them all to death.”
Have kids sit in a circle with their Bibles. Give scripture cards to kids who do not have a Bible.
Instruct kids to turn to Daniel 2 in their Bibles. NOTE: This may take time, but it helps them learn skills for reading the Bible on their own. If needed, encourage kids to use the table of contents in their Bible and then decide if the book is in the Old or New Testament.
Read the Bible story from the Bible Story Card. After being instructed to “READ” from the Story Card use your own Bible to read each passage.
In your Bible or on your scripture card, underline all the people who would be harmed by the king. (verses 12-13: the wise men of Babylon, Daniel and his friends)
What did the king do that was not right? (verse 12: He became so angry at the wise men he threatened to kill all of them.
We read that instead of looking out for just himself, Daniel stood up for others. Find the verse where Daniel talked to the king. Draw an arrow that’s pointing up to represent how Daniel stood up for others. (verse 16)
SAY: “Daniel knew it was wrong for the king to kill the wise men just because they couldn’t tell him his dream. So Daniel bravely spoke up and asked the king for time. Because Daniel had the courage to stand up for what was right, God helped Daniel to not only save his own life, but also the lives of his friends and all the wise men of the kingdom.”
Collect pens and scripture cards. Make sure kids write their names on their scripture cards. Hand scripture cards back to kids during dismissal.
THE KING’S STATUE
APPLICATION ACTIVITY: Kids will think about different ways they can stand up for others and who they can stand up for.
PAPER, PENS, LEADER SHEET
Give each kid a piece of paper and pen.
Have each kid draw a tiny stick person and a giant stick person on their paper. Encourage kids to to draw a mouth, eyes, feet, and hands on each stick person.
During discussion, kids will write on their paper.
SAY: “Daniel stood up for his friends and the other wise men because he knew it was the right thing to do. On your tiny stick person, circle the different parts Daniel used to help others and stand up for what’s right. (Allow time for kids to circle.) Daniel used his ears to hear the instructions; his mouth to ask questions tell the king the dream and interpret it; his mouth/mind to pray, and his feet to go see the king. And like Daniel, God has given us everything we need to help us stand up for others, too.”
Use the leader sheet to discuss how we can use different parts of our body to stand up for others.
After discussion, have kids form groups of four to five.
Give groups three minutes to make a statue like the one from King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream using their pieces of paper. The goal is for their statue to stand up with minimal assistance from the group.
After three minutes, have all groups stand up their statues.
SAY: “Great job on standing your statues! When you stand up for what’s right, you can stand up for others. At times, that can be a really scary thing to do. But God has given us the story of Daniel who shows us how it’s done. Daniel didn’t cave in to fear. When he heard about the king’s order to kill the wise men, he knew he had to do something. He spoke up for his friends and he saved the lives of all of them. But before he did that, he prayed. Prayer gave Daniel the strength to have conviction, and it can do the same for us, too!”
PRAYER AND GAME ACTIVITY: Prayer is an important way to share Jesus with passion. Spend time in prayer with your eGroup before beginning the game.
eKIDZ PRAYER JOURNAL, PENS
SAY: “Before we begin our last activity, let’s pray together.”
DO: Write down any prayer requests in your eKidz Prayer Journal. Kids can share their requests out loud or can write them directly in the journal.
SUGGESTED PRAYER: “Dear God, we know You’re the one who gave Daniel the courage and wisdom to know the king’s dream. We know You can give us courage and wisdom, too. Help us to not give in to our fears this week when we see a chance to stand up for someone who needs help. We love you! Amen.”
SAY: “Rosie’s talent may be dancing, but Tyson is pretty good at karate. One of the exercises he does to increase his speed and accuracy is a game called, Wa! Let’s play Wa! and see how your ninja skills compare to Tyson’s.”
DO: Play ‘Wa!’
Have kids stand in a circle and choose a Wa Master.
The Wa Master will start with both hands together in front of his or her chest, quickly chop/point in a downward motion towards another kid in the circle while saying, “Wa!” NOTE: Kids standing to the left and right of the Wa Master cannot be chosen.
The kid “receiving” the “Wa!” (the kid being pointed at) will raise his or her arms above their head with their hands together and say, “Wa!” The kids to the left and right of the kid receiving the “Wa!”will chop the kid receiving the “Wa!” with a “Wa!”
The “receiving” kid will then send/throw a “Wa!” towards another kid in the group, moving their hands from above their head down towards another kid in the circle.
Kids are eliminated when they incorrectly or inappropriately say, “Wa!”
The game is over when only three kids remain!
BRING IT! CHALLENGE
OVERVIEW: During Star Search kids have an opportunity to be rewarded for practicing standing for what is right. Kids can earn stars by learning about what the Bible says about conviction and applying it to their lives.
STAR SEARCH BRING IT! CHALLENGE CARD, HOLE PUNCH
SAY: “In Motion we want you to Bring It! to church each weekend! The Bring It! Challenge encourages you to bring yourself, your Bible, your friends, and scripture you’ve learned to Motion. Not only can you be rewarded for bringing it, but the Bring It! Challenge is a fun way to grow and learn more about God and how He wants us to live.”
Give each kid a Star Search Bring It! Challenge card.

Kids can earn ONE star in each category each weekend for:
finding James 4:17 in their Bible.
reciting James 4:17.
answering questions about conviction.
having conversations about conviction.
NOTE: Each weekend, kids can only earn ONE star for finding James 4:17 in their Bible or reciting James 4:17.
