finders4

Week 2:  November 21/22

 eGROUP LESSON PLAN

RESPONSIBILITY

Doing what you are supposed to do.

MAIN POINT

Doing what you are supposed to do by keeping your word.

MEMORY VERSE: LUKE 16:10 (NIV)

Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much,
and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.

BIBLE STORY

Daniel and the Lions Den

Daniel 1:1-4; 6

ENGAGE

ENGAGE starts 20 minutes before the worship experience begins. (4:40, 9:10, 11:10)

ENGAGE
Engage is a time to welcome kids to your eGroup with a fun activity to help them feel comfortable and get to know each other.

TIME
30 MINUTES

DO: Start by introducing yourself and welcoming kids to the eGroup. Ask them about their week and interests. Once you have five to six kids begin the Engage activity.

SPOT IT: “FIND IT FIRST” EDITION

SUPPLIES

SPOT IT CARDS (1 FOOL’S GOLD CARD IN EACH DECK)

FIND IT FIRST – VERSION 1 (TWO TO EIGHT PLAYERS)

  • OBJECT: The object of the game is to collect the most cards.
  • SET UP: Have players sit in a circle. Shuffle the cards and deal one card face-up to each player. Place the remaining cards face down in the center of the group to form a draw pile.
    • Flip over the top card from the draw pile. Players try to be the first to find the ONE matching symbol appearing on both the center card and on their own card. The first player to do so should call it out (ex: “Lion!”) then take the center card and place it face-up on top of their flipped card, building a personal pile.
    • The first player to find the fool’s gold card must call out, “FOOL’S GOLD.” The first player to call it out gets to take a card from any player they choose.
    • Players will continue to use the top card of their personal pile to find a match with the revealed draw pile card. Repeat this process each time a new draw pile card is revealed. Play continues until no cards remain in the draw pile. The player with the most cards is the winner!

FIND IT FIRST – VERSION 2 (TWO TO EIGHT PLAYERS)

  • OBJECT: The object of the game is to have the least amount of cards after all rounds have been played. This is accomplished by getting rid of cards each round.
  • SET UP: Have players sit in a circle. Shuffle the cards and deal one card face down to each player. Set aside the remaining cards to use later. Decide how many rounds to play (between 4 and 8).
    • At the same time, players turn over the card in their hand, holding the card flat and steady in their palm so everyone can see. If players find a match between their card and another player’s card, he/she must call it out. (example: “Banana!”)
    • The player to call it out first places their card on top of matching player’s card and is now out for the round. (NOTE: Players with more than one card only look at their top card.) The round continues until one player ends up with all of the cards. The player loses the round and places the cards in a personal pile.
    • The first player to find the fool’s gold card must call out “FOOL’S GOLD.” The first player to call it out will give away their card to any player and is out for that round OR if they have a personal pile from losing a previous round they can give away their pile to any player.
    • Play as many rounds as decided at the beginning. Each round the losing player keeps the cards.
    • After all rounds have been played the player with the least amount of cards wins!

SAY: “Welcome to eGroup! My name is _______ and I’m your eGroup leader! As an eGroup we will hang out together during Motion, hear stories from the Bible, learn what it means to live for Jesus, and play games!

This is the first weekend of Finders 4: Fool’s Gold! Our favorite mystery solving friends, The Finders, are back! This season of The Finders, Hannah, Zack, Caleb, and Charlie will find out that to be trusted with important things, you have to be responsible. Responsibility is doing what you are supposed to do. Today we will learn being responsible means doing what you are supposed to do by keeping your word.

When you have been asked to do something like a chore, class work, or a job, it’s called a responsibility. The Bible tells us when you do what you are supposed to do, with the smallest responsibilities, you can be trusted with big responsibilities, too. Let’s memorize Luke 16:10 to help us remember what Jesus taught in the Bible about responsibility.”

DO: Practice the memory verse with kids. You can use the following methods to help kids learn the memory verse:

  • REPEAT AFTER ME: Have kids repeat the words after you.
  • PAIR UP: After practicing the verse as a group, have kids pair up to practice the verse.
  • MOTIONS: Come up with motions to help remember the verse as a group. Practice it together.
  • DROP A BEAT: Put the verse to a beat as you say it together. You can do this by clapping, patting your legs, stomping, or any combination to make a beat.

Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much,

and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.

Luke 16:10 (NIV)

SUPPLIES

FINDERS 4 CHARACTER CARDS (Caleb, Charlie, Zack, Hannah, Xander)

SAY: “What an intense episode of Finders 4: Fool’s Gold! It seems like Goldman just might be responsible for stealing the assimilation ray and The Finders are one step closer to finding Goldman’s hideout.”

DO:

  • Review the characters in today’s episode of Finders 4: Fool’s Gold by displaying the four Finders 4 character cards seen in the episode
  • Place the Caleb, Charlie, Zack, Hannah, and Xander cards in separate sections of the eGroup area.
  • Have kids sit around the character cards of their favorite character from today’s episode. There should be no more than four kids around each character card.
  • Once kids are sitting around the card have them introduce themselves to their group and share why this character is their favorite from episode 1 of Finders 4: Fool’s Gold.

SAY: “One of the things I love about The Finders is each of us can connect with at least one character in each episode. Let’s talk about what happened to the characters in this week’s episode.”

DO:

  • Ask the following questions and have kids discuss in their groups. Share answers from different groups after each question.
  • QUESTIONS:
  • At the bakery, what did Hannah give her word to do? (Clean the bakery and lock the doors.)
  • What happened because Hannah didn’t lock the doors? (A thief was able to steal the assimilation ray and recipe book.)
  • If Hannah would have done what she said she was going to do, what might have happened? (The assimilation ray and recipe book would not have been stolen. Xander would not have been tied up. The bakery would not be a mess Hannah’s uncle and friends would not have lost trust in her.)
  • Why is it important to keep your word and do what you say you will do? (It shows you can be trusted.)
  • Collect the cards before moving on to the next activity.

Daniel Kept His Word | Daniel 1:1-4; 6

BIBLE STORY ACTIVITY: Kids will assimilate the story by piecing different parts of the story together. Kids will draw how the Bible story characters acted responsibly or did not act responsibly.

SUGGESTED TIME

8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES

BIBLES, ASSIMILATION SHEET, PENS, NOTECARDS, LEADER SHEET, CANDY CLUE 1

SAY: “Today we have another opportunity to eat Uncle Xander’s delicious candy, but must earn two clues to guess today’s flavor! To receive our first candy clue, we need to read our Bibles and see how important it is to keep our word in our lives.

In the episodes we saw Uncle Xander’s assimilation ray take special powder and assimilate it (put it together) to form any food in the world. Last week we learned The word assimilation means to take in and understand. It’s like putting the pieces together so you can understand something. Let’s assimilate the Bible story by finding how a man named Daniel kept his word .”

DO:

  • Have kids sit in a circle with their Bibles.
  • Use the leader sheet to instruct kids where to turn in their Bibles to find and read examples of Noah showing responsibility. NOTE: This may take time, but it helps them learn skills for reading the Bible on their own.
  • Give each kid a notecard and a pen. Have kids draw two lines to divide their notecard into four sections.
  • For each part of the Bible story you read to the kids, have them draw how Noah showed responsibility on their notecard.
  • ASK:
  • How did Daniel keep his word? (By refusing to pray to anyone else but God and continuing to pray to God even after the law said he couldn’t.)
  • Because Daniel kept his word, God protected him. How? (God kept Daniel safe while he was in the lion’s den by shutting the lion’s mouth.)
  • After discussion, have kids put their notecards on the Bible Story Box on the Assimilation Sheet.

SAY: “Great job! We’ve earned our first clue by finding responsibility in the Bible! (Show kids Clue Card 1.) What flavor could today’s Xander candy be? (Allow kids to respond.) Let’s learn about responsibility in our own lives to get our final clue.”

DO: Place the Clue Card 1 on the Clue 1 Box on the Assimilation Sheet.

SUGGESTED TIME

SUPPLIES

CANDY CLUE 2, ASSIMILATION SHEET (FROM PREVIOUS ACTIVITY), XANDER’S CANDY OF THE WEEK

SAY: “Daniel wasn’t the only person in the bible who kept his word. Jesus kept His word by doing everything He said He would do! In John 15:10 Jesus says, “I have kept my Father’s commands.” Jesus kept His word! He told others about God, healed the sick, helped the poor, fed the hungry, and die for our sins on the cross. Jesus showed He was responsible by doing everything He said He would do. Let’s talk about what we can do to be more like Jesus by keeping our word.”

DO:

  • Have kids sit in a circle.
  • Ask the questions below to have kids discuss how they can be responsible.
  • After each discussion question give the group one piece of clue 2 by placing it on the “Xander’s Candy Clue 2” spot on the Assimilation Sheet.
  • After all four questions have been discussed the second candy clue will be revealed!

QUESTIONS:

  • When was a time you gave your word to someone and kept it? How did it make you feel?
  • How does it feel when you keep your word? How does it feel when someone else keeps their word?
  • How does it make you feel when someone gives you their word, but doesn’t keep it, like Hannah did what she said she’d clean up the bakery?
  • Who is someone you trust? Why do you trust this person?
  • Why should we trust people who keep their word?
  • Share a time you gave your word to someone, but did not keep it. Did this person trust you any less?
  • How does keeping your word show responsibility?
  • Why is it important for us to keep our word?

SAY: “When we keep our word, we are being responsible. Let’s assimilate our last clue to see what todays’s flavor of Xander’s Candy is! What is it? (Allow kids to respond.) What do you think of Xander’s Candy flavor is today? (Allow kids to respond.) That’s right! Lemon Lime! Nice work. Here is a piece of lemon lime Xander’s Candy! Come back next week and we’ll assimilate more clues about responsibility and try another candy flavor.”

DO: Pass out one piece of Xander’s lemon lime candy to each kid. Allow them to eat it. Teach them to show responsibility by cleaning up the eGroup area and not leaving any wrappers behind!
