SAY: “Welcome to eGroup! My name is _______ and I’m your eGroup leader! As an eGroup we will hang out together during Motion, hear stories from the Bible, learn what it means to live for Jesus, and play games!

We are in a series called Hollywood Highlight Reel 3. In Hollywood Highlight Reel 3, we’ll enter The Vault and check out some classic movies each weekend. We will look at reel honesty and how to be truthful in whatever we say and do. Today we will learn being truthful can keep you from trouble.

The Bible talks about the importance of honesty to God. When anyone believes in Jesus, they are a new creation – the old has gone and the new has come. (2 Corinthians 5:17) As a new creation, we choose to live in ways which make us more like Jesus. Sharing, obeying our leaders, loving people – these are a few ways we become more like Jesus. Our series memory verse says when we follow Jesus and do not lie to each other, we are becoming more like Jesus, too. Let’s learn Colossians 3:9-10 to remind us how important being honest is to God.”

DO: Practice the memory verse with kids. You can use the following methods to help kids learn the memory verse:

  • REPEAT AFTER ME: Have kids repeat the words after you.
  • PAIR UP: After practicing the verse as a group, have kids pair up to practice the verse.
  • MOTIONS: Come up with motions to help remember the verse as a group. Practice it together.
  • DROP A BEAT: Put the verse to a beat as you say it together. You can do this by clapping, patting your legs, stomping, or any combination to make a beat.

Don’t lie to one another, since you have take off your old self
with it’s practices and have put on the new self, which
is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.
Colossians 3:9-10 (NIV)

DISCUSSION ACTIVITY: During Grow: Lights you’ll shine a light on the main point for the day. Kids will connect the theme of honesty to the movie clip and will connect how honesty applies to their lives. They will also connect with each other.

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
MULAN CARD (1 PER KID), SCENARIO SHEET, WARRIOR CARD (1 PER eGROUP)

Screen Shot 2015-10-06 at 4.09.39 PM

SAY: “Mulan was not truthful when she lied about who she was to fight for her father, even if she had good intentions. But being truthful from the beginning could have kept her from trouble. Now she has been left behind and has lost the trust of her friends. Let’s talk about how honesty can change a situation and can keep you from trouble.”

DO:

  • Kids will form groups of two to three to answer the following questions.
  • They will first introduce themselves to each other, then answer the question.
  • Have kids form new groups of two to three for each question.
  • Questions:
    • What happened because Mulan wasn’t truthful? (She lost the trust of her friends.)
    • What might have happened if Mulan was honest from the beginning?
    • Did anyone else get in trouble because of Mulan’s dishonesty?
    • If you were Mulan, how would you gain back the trust of your friends?
    • How can being honest keep you from trouble?

SAY: “Honesty is a big deal to God! One of the 10 commandments, the 10 rules God gave the Israelites to show them how to live, is to tell the truth. Honesty isn’t an easy choice, though. In every situation Jesus faced, he had a choice: He could be truthful in what He said and did or He could tell a lie. When we choose to be truthful in what we say and do, we live like Jesus did. Sometimes telling a lie seems easier and that it will keep you out of trouble. But lies only lead to more lies. God wants what is best for you. He knows being honest, even though it might not be easy, is better.”

DO:

  • Give each kid a Mulan card and read a scenario from the scenario sheet.
  • For each scenario:
    • Have kids hold up the Mulan Warrior side of the card if the kid in the scenario is not being honest with what they say/do. Discuss why it isn’t honest and what they can say/do.
    • Have kids hold up the Mulan side of the card if the kid in the scenario is being honest with what they say and do. Discuss how this is better than being dishonest.

OLDER MODIFICATION: Spread out the Mulan cards and warrior card in the center of the circle. Place the same number of cards in the center as the number of kids in your group. As you read a scenario, kids will race to grab a card and hold up the side being described. Follow the directions above for each scenario. The kid with the warrior card will proceed to yell, “hi-yah!” each time he or she reaches for a card for the remainder of the activity.

 GROW: CAMERA

SAY: “Our Bible story comes from the book of Ruth. Our Bible story star is a woman named Ruth. Ruth had helped her mother-in-law, Naomi, when there was no one left to help her. She moved with her to a strange new town Ruth had never lived in before. Ruth didn’t stop there. Once they arrived in their new home, Ruth knew she had to get food for her and Naomi to eat. That’s where our story picks up. I’m going to need your help to tell this story to see how Ruth chose honesty in what she said and did.”

DO:

  • Assign seven kids to play different roles in the story: Ruth, Naomi, Boaz, overseer of grain field, other workers in the fieldÅ. The rest of the eGroup will be audience members who will interact with the story. The eGroup leader is the Narrator.
  • If you do not have enough kids in your eGroup to play the different roles, have kids play more than one role.
  • Read the Bible Story Script and have kids act out the Bible story using the prop cards.

After the Bible Story:
SAY: Ruth could have chosen to be dishonest with her actions and words. She could have been sneaky and taken the grain from the field without permission. Instead, she asked the overseer for permission and worked hard to collect grain. She was also honest with Boaz.

Being honest kept Ruth from trouble. If she had lied or stolen the food Boaz would have been angry and could have had her arrested. Naomi would have been left alone with no one to care for her. Instead, Ruth was rewarded for her honesty when Boaz fed her and allowed her to continue to collect grain in his field.“

GROW: ACTION

CHOOSE THE RIGHT WARRIOR MOVE
PRAYER AND GAME ACTIVITY: Prayer is an important way to share Jesus with passion. Spend time in prayer with your eGroup before beginning the game.

SAY: “Before we begin our last activity, let’s pray together.”

DO: Take prayer requests and write them down in your eKidz prayer journal so you can pray for your eGroup kids during the week. Encourage kids to share one or two prayer requests. Invite kids to pray with you if they want.

SUGGESTED PRAYER: “Dear God, help us to live a life of honesty and choose to do and say what is truthful in Your sight. We know it is important to tell the truth even when it is hard. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

SAY: “Being truthful is a choice. We should choose to be truthful, even when it’s hard. Ruth had a choice to be honest or dishonest, and she chose to be honest. In today’s game, you’ll have a choice, too. This choice will determine if your team gets a point and stays out of trouble! Will you choose the right move?”

DO:

  • The goal of the game is to earn the most points for your team by holding each warrior move the longest each round.
  • Divide your eGroup into two teams. Have them stand on opposite sides of the eGroup area.
  • For each round show teams a Choose the Right Warrior Move card.
  • These cards will have two warrior moves to choose from. Both teams can choose the same move.
  • Each round the entire team plays. All team members must hold the move chosen without losing balance, putting a foot down, or coming out of the warrior move.
  • If anyone cannot hold the warrior move, they must sit down where they are standing.
  • The team with the last kid standing earns a point for their team.
  • Have teams stand back up and play again with another Choose the Right Warrior Move card.
  • The team with the most points at the end of the game wins!
