SAY: “Welcome to eGroup! My name is _______ and I’m your eGroup leader! As an eGroup we will hang out together during Motion, read from the Bible, learn what it means to live for Jesus, and play games! Today we start a new series called My Bible: Unplugged. During My Bible, we’ll unplug from ideas like the Bible is boring, unconnected to our lives, or unimportant and plug in to the Bible to learn more about it, how to use it, and how it applies to our everyday lives.”

DO:

  • Explain bringing a Bible to Motion is very important because we use it to help us learn about Jesus and how to live.
  • Not only will we be using our Bibles in eGroup, we’ll also be taking them to Large Group this series.
  • Have kids get out their Bibles to look up the weekly scripture.
  • Let kids who do not have their Bible share from your eGroup Bible supply OR give these kids a  weekly scripture card to take with them to Large Group.
  • Give each kid a bookmark to mark the verse in their Bible so they can find it easily during Large Group. NOTE: Give all kids a bookmark, not just kids with a Bible.

SCRIPTURE FINDING SKILLS

SAY: “Our scripture this week is Hebrews 4:12. Hebrews is a book of the Bible found in the New Testament. Turn to the Table of Contents in your Bible. Let’s find the word Hebrews there.” Help kids locate the Table of Contents and find Hebrews.

SAY: “The Table of Contents can help you find a book in the Bible. What page does Hebrews start in your Bible? Let’s turn to that page right now!” NOTE: This page number will be different depending on the Bible. Help kids find the page in their Bibles.

SAY: “Next, let’s look at the big, dark numbers. The big numbers are the chapters for each book. We need to find chapter 4 for Hebrews 4.” Help kids find Hebrews 4 in their Bibles.

SAY: “Now, we need to find the verse. The verse is the little number. We need to look for the little 12 that is after the big 4. Got it? Once you do put, your bookmark on that page!” Help kids mark their Bibles in the correct spot.

SAY: “Our weekly scripture, Hebrews 4:12, which Chelsea read in the video today, told us how the Bible is alive and active! The Bible is NOT boring BUT is the ultimate story, full of heroes, villains, action, love, and grace. Everything in the Bible is true! The words inside the Bible show us how to live our lives. We need to read it again and again and again to remind us of God’s power, which never fails or lets us down!

Let’s open our Bibles and check out some of the exciting stories inside.”

DO:

  • Kids will work with partners to find the book of the Bible shown on the Books of the Bible card you hold up. Kids will work with a different partner for each card.
  • Have kids find a partner and introduce themselves.
  • Have kids open up their Bibles to the Table of Contents.
  • Explain kids must work with their partner to find the book of the Bible you hold up on the Books of the Bible card. They can use the Table of Contents to find the book in the Bible.
  • Once all partners have found the book of the Bible on the Books of the Bible card read the back of the card so kids can hear some of the exciting stories found in that book of the Bible.
  • Have kids find a different partner, introduce themselves, and repeat with a different Books of the Bible card.

SAY: “These are just a handful of the amazing books of the Bible. Check them out and read them with your family. You won’t be disappointed!”

SAY: “One of my favorite people to read about in the Bible is Jesus. The New Testament is full of stories of His life, how He came to Earth in a miraculous way, how He lived, how He taught about God, and about the incredible miracles He performed.

Now, the Bible tells us we all sin, or do wrong things that are against God, and can’t be with Him in Heaven because of sin. But the Bible also tells us how Jesus died for us on the cross so we can be forgiven for our sins. This is the story of grace. Grace is a gift, because it isn’t something we deserve or paid for, but it is a gift from God. One thing I like to do to plug in to My Bible is to highlight parts I want to remember to go back and read again. I’m going to show you by having us highlight a verse in Bibles right now! This verse tells us about God’s grace.”

DO:

  • Have kids open up their Bibles to Ephesians 2:8. They can use the Table of Contents in their Bibles to help them.
  • Once kids have found the scripture read it aloud together.
  • Give kids a highlighter. For kids who do not have a Bible, give them an Ephesians 2:8 card to highlight.
  • Use the following instructions to discuss and highlight in the Bible/Ephesians 2:8 card:
    • Highlight the word grace.
      • SAY: “God showed us grace when He sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sins.”
    • Highlight the word saved.
      • SAY: “Because Jesus took our punishment we can be saved from sin and can go to Heaven one day.”
    • Highlight the word faith.
      • SAY: “All it takes is faith, believing in Jesus, to be saved.”
    • Highlight the words gift of God.
      • SAY: “It is not anything we can do by ourselves, it is a gift from God.”

Scripture Highlights

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God

SAY: “The Bible is the ultimate story and it points us to the gift of grace. God has given us the power to be saved if we believe in Jesus and what He did for us. That’s the best gift you can ever get. Now that we’ve highlighted Ephesians 2:8 we can go back and read this verse to remind us of this amazing news.”

GROW

SWORD DRILLS
PRAYER AND GAME ACTIVITY: Prayer is an important way to share Jesus with passion. Spend time in prayer with your eGroup before beginning the game.

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
eKIDZ PRAYER JOURNAL, PEN, PLASTIC SWORD (1 PER eGROUP)

Screen Shot 2015-09-09 at 12.45.22 PM

SAY: “Before we begin our last activity, let’s pray together.”

DO: Take prayer requests and write them down in your eKidz prayer journal so you can pray for your eGroup kids during the week. Encourage kids to share one or two prayer requests. Invite kids to pray with you if they want.

SUGGESTED PRAYER: “Dear God, Thank You for Your living Word, the Bible. It is alive and active in our lives. Help us to learn from Your Word as we plug in to the Bible every day. We love You! In Jesus’ name, amen.”

SAY: “Our weekly scripture, Hebrews 4:12, compared the Bible to a sword, but sharper and more powerful! Like a sword, the Word of God defends what is right for our lives and protects us from what can harm us. In our game today you’ll learn sword moves. How quick you are at these sword moves will defend and protect your spot in the game!”

DO:

  • The goal is to stay in the game by following directions the quickest. Those who are slowest are eliminated.
  • Have kids stand and spread out in the eGroup area.
  • Kids will learn five sword moves. Let kids practice the sword moves before beginning the game.
    • Left Swipe: swipe your arm down to the left
    • Right Swipe: swipe your arm down to the right
    • Left Guard: hold your left arm up to block
    • Right Guard: hold your right arm up to block
    • The Lunge: jump forward with an arm straight out
  • The sword commander, who will be the eGroup leader for the first round, holds the plastic sword and gives the sword commands above.
  • Start out slow at first and get faster to make staying in the game more difficult.
  • The slowest kid to do the move is out and sits down. This is decided by the sword commander.
  • Continue until one kid remains. He/she becomes the next sword commander. The eGroup leader should help the sword commander decide who is out.
  • Play again as time allows.

But something just as important as bringing your Bible to Motion is using your Bible at home, too! That’s how we stay plugged in, by reading the Bible other times during the week.

Each week of My Bible I’ll give you a devotional to do at home with your family. If you bring the devotional back next weekend you’ll earn an additional tool from the My Bible Bin to use in your Bible!”

DO: Give kids the Week 1 Devotional. Have them put this in their Bible.
