SAY: “Welcome to eGroup! My name is _______ and I’m your eGroup leader! As an eGroup we will hang out together during Motion, read from the Bible, learn what it means to live for Jesus, and play games! We are in a series called My Bible: Unplugged. During My Bible, we’ll unplug from ideas like the Bible is boring, unconnected to our lives, or unimportant and plug into the Bible to learn more about it, how to use it, and how it applies to our everyday lives.”

DO:

  • Explain bringing a Bible to Motion is very important because we use it to help us learn about Jesus and how to  live.
  • Not only will we be using our Bibles in eGroup, we’ll also be taking them to Large Group this series.
  • Have kids get out their Bibles to look up the weekly scripture.
  • Let kids who do not have their Bible share from your eGroup Bible supply. These kids will also take a scripture card with them to Large Group.
  • Give VIP kids/kids new to series a bookmark to mark the verse in their Bibles so they can find it easily during Large Group. The bookmark has the books of the Bible to help them locate scripture in their Bible.
  • Kids who already have a bookmark should bring their bookmark back each week.

SCRIPTURE FINDING SKILLS

SAY: “Our scripture this week is James 1:22-25. James is a book of the Bible found in the New Testament. Turn to the Table of Contents in your Bible. Let’s find the word James there.” Help kids locate the Table of Contents and find James.

SAY: “The Table of Contents can help you find a book in the Bible. What page does James start in your Bible? Let’s turn to that page right now!” NOTE: This page number will be different depending on the Bible. Help kids find the page in their Bibles.

SAY: “Next, let’s look at the big, dark numbers. The big numbers are the chapters for each book. We need to find chapter 1 for James 1.” Help kids find James 1 in their Bibles.

SAY: “Now, we need to find the verse. The verse is the little number. We need to look for the little 22 that is after the big 1. Got it? Once you do put your bookmark on that page!” Help kids mark their Bibles in the correct spot.

SAY: “Today Chelsea explained to us how the Bible is like a mirror. The more we look into it by reading, discussing, and memorizing it, we start to see ourselves how God created us to be. Everything in the Bible is true. It is a plan given to us by God so we can know how to live to be more like Jesus! Let’s read James 1:23-25 again but this time let’s start at verse 22!”

DO:

  • Have kids open up their Bibles to James 1:22. It should still be bookmarked from Large Group, but if not, help kids find the verse again. Read James 1:22-25 out loud. Kids without Bibles can follow along on the weekly scripture card.
  • Kids will form groups of two to three to answer the following questions. First they will introduce themselves and then answer the question. Have kids form new groups of two to three for each question.
  • Ask a question and let the kids discuss. Then follow up the question with the SAY.

QUESTION 1: “How did you learn how to walk?”
SAY: “It took someone showing you how to walk and helping you as you learned.”

QUESTION 2: “How do you bake a cake?”
SAY: “You read the recipe and follow the steps to know what ingredients to use and what order to prepare them in. Following the recipe helps a cake or other dish turn out well.”

QUESTION 3: “How do athletes get better at a sport?”
SAY: “To get better at a sport athletes listen to their coach and practice what the coach teaches them.”

QUESTION 4: “How do we learn how to live?”
SAY: “We learn how to live by following God’s words in the Bible.”

SAY: “God gave us His words in the Bible so we can know how we are to live. God wants what is best for us. Let’s talk more about how the Bible shows us how we are to live.”

LISTENING AND DOING
DISCUSSION ACTIVITY: During discussion kids will interact with the Bible and learn ways to plug into their Bible. The goal is the skills learned will help them as they read their Bible at home.

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
BIBLES, EPHESIANS 4:32 CARD (FOR KIDS WITHOUT BIBLES), COLORFUL PENS, WORD CARDS (1-2 GRADE)

Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 2.47.03 PM

SAY: “The Bible is full of ways we should live to be like Jesus. We have to plug into the Bible as much as we can to know what it says about how we are to live. Today we are going to read a verse and learn together what God is teaching us through it. When I find important words that teach me about how to live I underline them with a bright color. We are going to do that with some important words in Ephesians 4:32.”

DO:

  • Have kids open up their Bibles to Ephesians 4:32. Help kids locate the verse in their Bible. Encourage kids to use the Table of Contents or their Books of the Bible bookmark.
  • Give kids a pen. For kids who do not have a Bible, give them an Ephesians 4:32 card as well.
  • Read Ephesians 4:32 out loud.
  • Use the instructions to discuss and underline in the Bible/Ephesians 4:32 card: (For younger kids hold up the word cards as you ask them to underline in their Bible/Ephesians 4:32 card.)
    • Underline the word kind. The Bible says we should be kind.
      • ASK: “How can we live in a way that shows kindness to others?” (Allow kids to respond. Choose kind words instead of mean, share, take turns.)
    • Underline the word compassionate. The Bible says we should be compassionate.
      • ASK: “To be compassionate means to be understanding, caring and loving. How can we live in a way that shows compassion to others?” (Allow kids to respond. Be understanding, put others’ needs before your own, care for others feelings.)
    • Underline the word forgiving. The Bible says we should be forgiving.
      • SAY: “We are forgiven because Jesus forgives us. God says we should forgive because we are forgiven. Think of someone you need to forgive.” (Pause for kids to think and reflect.)

SAY: “The Bible shows us how we are to live. This verse is just one example of all the great instructions in the Bible. We need to take what we hear and do it. Remember, the Bible says in James 1:25, if we do what we’ve heard, we will be blessed.“

ASK: “How can we be blessed when we are kind, compassionate, and forgiving?” (Allow kids to respond. When we are kind, compassionate, and forgiving, it shows others the love of Jesus. Others will remember how you treated them.)

SUGGESTED PRAYER: “Dear God, thank You for the plan You have given us for how we are to live. Help us to be plugged into the Bible and learn from it. Thank You for your blessing of love and protection for following Your ways. We love You! In Jesus’ name, amen.”

SAY: “Today in the My Bible episode, Chelsea talked about mirrors. She said mirrors can be extremely helpful, letting you see things from a different angle – so you can see what others see. For our game today the team who is the best at using a mirror to see things from a different angle will win the game!”

DO:

  • The goal is to earn the most points by guessing what your team is showing you through the mirror.
  • Split kids into two teams.
  • For each round have teams send up one person to be a guesser and hold a mirror. Make sure it is a different person each round so everyone gets a turn.
  • Have teams sit on one side of the eGroup area. Have guessers stand on the other side of the eGroup area with their backs to their team.
  • Show each team, but not the guessers, a Mirror, Mirror card.
  • When you say go teams will act out what is on the Mirror, Mirror card. Guessers will watch their team through the mirror.

SAY: “Reading the Bible is the best way to plug in to the plan God has for your life. By bringing your Bible to Motion we’ll learn how to do that together. But something just as important as bringing your Bible to Motion is using your Bible at home, too! That’s how we stay plugged in, by reading the Bible other times during the week.

Each week of My Bible I’ll give you a devotional to do at home with your family. Who brought back their devotional from last weekend? (Reward these kids with a My Bible Bin ticket to receive an additional tool from the My Bible Bin at dismissal.) If you bring a devotional back next weekend you’ll earn another tool from the My Bible Bin to use in your Bible!”

DO: Give kids the Week 2 Devotional. Have them put this in their Bible.
