WHO’S THE RINGLEADER?

WHAT YOU NEED: no supplies

WHAT YOU DO:

  • Start by introducing yourself and welcoming kids to your eGroup. Ask them about their week and interests. Use the following questions to generate discussion:
  • What’s something cool that happened this week?
  • What was the best part of your week?
  • Have you ________ (seen/eaten/listened to/read) any good _________ (movies/TV shows/food/music/books) lately?
  • What are you looking forward to next week?

Once you have five to six kids, begin “Who’s the Ringleader?”

  • Ask kids to form a circle, facing inwards. Choose someone to stand in the middle.
  • Explain the object of the game is for the kid in the center to identify who the ringleader is. The ringleader will lead the group in performing different gestures, trying to change the gesture without the kid in the center seeing them do it.
  • Tell the kid in the center to close and cover their eyes while you choose the ringleader.
  • Choose a ringleader and ask that kid to perform a gesture over and over again, which the group will then follow. (Suggestions: pat head, rub tummy, jump up and down on one leg, high five neighbors, blink really fast, clap, etc.)
  • Note: Once the ringleader begins the gesture, the kid in the middle can open their eyes.
  • Encourage the ringleader to change gestures whenever they want, as often as they want, and as many times as they want.
  • Remind the group to do what the ringleader does as soon as they see the gesture change, but to try not to stare at the ringleader too much so the kid in the middle can’t figure out who it is.
  • Challenge the kid in the middle to identify the ringleader.
  • Once the kid in the middle identifies the right person, choose a new ringleader and a new person to stand in the middle. Repeat as long as time allows.

Bible Story

BIBLE STORY BEAT

WHAT YOU NEED: Bible, drum sticks (3), question card, drum cards (10)

WHAT YOU SAY:

“Welcome to eGroup! My name is _______ and I’m your eGroup leader! As an eGroup we will hang out together during Motion, hear stories from the Bible, learn what it means to live for Jesus, and play games!

We’re in a series called Drum Line, where we’re learning about showing respect to others. Let’s dig into God’s Word together now and learn more about what it means to show respect!”

WHAT YOU DO:

  • Have kids sit in a circle with their Bibles and instruct kids to turn to James 2. NOTE: This may take time, but it helps kids learn skills for reading the Bible on their own. If needed, encourage kids to use the table of contents in their Bible and then decide if the book is in the Old or New Testament.
  • Read James 2:1-4, 8-9 aloud.
  • Spread the drum cards on the floor in the center of the eGroup space.
  • Divide kids into three teams. Choose one kid from each team to play. Give each of these kids a drum stick and make sure they are all seated so they can reach all of the drum cards.
  • Explain you will be asking questions related to the Bible story. All of the answers can be found on the drum cards. When a kid knows the answer, they can “play” (tap) the drum card with the correct answer.
  • eGL TIP: Remind kids that they must be responsible with the drum sticks if they want to continue using them – no hitting anyone or anything other than the drum cards with the drum sticks. If kids are not behaving responsibly with the drum sticks, the game can be played without them by having kids pat the drum cards with their hands.
  • Ask the first question on the question card and encourage the players with the drum sticks to tap the drum card with the correct answer. Give the drum card to the player who taps the correct answer first.
  • Choose a new kid from each team to play and repeat. Continue until all questions have been asked. The team with the most drum cards when all questions have been asked wins!

WHAT YOU SAY:

“God made all of us in His image and He loves us all. When you decide not to pick favorites, and when you decide to show everyone they are important, you are showing God respect.”

IT’S UNDER CONTROL

WHAT YOU NEED: people pictures (8)

WHAT YOU DO:

  • Spread the people pictures around your eGroup space.
  • Explain you’ll ask kids questions about which of those people they would choose in different situations. The kids will stand by the picture of the person they think would be best in that situation.
  • eGL Tip: Even if kids ask, try not to explain much about who the different people are. The goal is for kids to become aware of their assumptions of people based on just what they see.
  • Read one of the scenarios below and encourage kids to stand by the picture of the person they would choose in that situation. Choose a couple of kids and ask them to explain why they chose that person.
  • If you needed someone to build you a house, who would you choose?
  • If you needed a hug, who would you choose?
  • If you needed help with math homework, who would you choose?
  • If you needed a friend to talk to, who would you choose?
  • If you wanted some freshly-baked cookies, who would you choose?
  • If you wanted to ride bikes with someone, who would you choose?
  • If you needed advice about a tough decision, who would you choose?
  • If you were going camping, who would you choose to take you?

WHAT YOU SAY:

“You wouldn’t ask a baby for help with homework, and an elderly person who uses a cane probably doesn’t ride bikes. But for the most part, you can’t know much about a person based on what they look like. We can be tempted to choose people to be our friends or to help us do something based on what we can see on the outside. But God doesn’t want us to do that. He doesn’t want us to choose favorites and treat some people better than others. We should treat all people with respect. You respect God when you respect the people God made.

Discussion Questions:

  • “Why do you think people choose favorites?”
  • “Have you ever been hurt by someone playing favorites?”
  • “What does it feel like when you’re ‘the favorite’? What does it feel like when you know you’re not?”
  • “What’s one situation where you can show respect by not playing favorites?”

JOURNAL AND PRAYER

WHAT YOU NEED: eKidz Prayer Journal (or eKidz Prayer Journal page), pen

WHAT YOU SAY:

“Today we learned we respect God when we respect the people He made. When your respectful attitude points others to God, you can see God do great things through you!

I want you to think of one person you could do a better job showing respect to this week. I’m going to write your name and what you share in our eKidz Prayer Journal so I can pray for you this week.”

WHAT YOU DO:

Write down what kids share in your eKidz Prayer Journal. Take your eKidz Prayer Journal home with you and pray for your kids throughout the week.

SUGGESTED PRAYER:

“God, You love us all so much! We are important to You! Help us show others they are important by what we say and do. Open our eyes to see opportunities to show people respect because we know when we respect the people You made, we respect You. We love You! Amen.”

Memory Verse

WHAT YOU NEED: Bibles, Bible tool kits, die (1), verse cards (4 sets of 6 cards each)

WHAT YOU SAY:

“Our Bible verse, 1 Peter 2:17, tells us God wants us to show everyone respect. God created them in His image and with a specific purpose, so He wants us to show them the proper respect.”

WHAT YOU DO:

  • Read the verse out loud: “Show proper respect to everyone.” 1 Peter 2:17a
  • Help kids look up the memory verse in their Bibles. Encourage children to use tools from the Bible tool kit to mark the verse in their Bible. Tell kids who didn’t bring a Bible they will receive a memory verse card during the Bring It! Challenge so they can remember to practice it at home.
  • Ask kids if there are any words or phrases they don’t understand and explain them as needed.
  • Choose one of the memory verse activities: “Roll the Verse” or “Verse Practice.”

ROLL THE VERSE

  • Split kids into four teams. Give each team a set of verse cards.
  • Assign one player on each team to hold the cards until the team has earned each card.
  • Explain teams will race to put the verse cards in order by rolling the die to earn the cards.
  • When teams earn a card, they should lay it on the ground in front of their team.
  • Cards should be placed on the ground in order as they are earned.
  • Each number represents the word in that position in the memory verse. (Example: 1 = “Show,” because it’s the first word in the verse; 6 = “1 Peter 2:17a” because it’s last.)
  • Tell kids there are penalties involved.
  • If you roll the number for a word you’ve already earned, you have to return that card to the player holding your stack of cards.
  • If you roll the same number two times in a row, you must return all of your cards to the player holding your stack.
  • Teams will take turns rolling the die to earn cards. The first team to earn all six cards and put the verse in order in front of them wins!

VERSE PRACTICE

Use the following methods to help kids practice the memory verse:

  • REPEAT AFTER ME: Have kids repeat each phrase of the verse after you.
  • PAIR UP: Have kids pair up to practice the verse together.
  • MOTIONS: Come up with motions to represent phrases in the verse. Practice it together.
