Motion eGroup Week of January 20

Work It Out

Virtue: Commitment: Making a plan and putting it into practice.

KID CONNECT

BRAINS AND BRAWN

WHAT YOU NEED: deck of cards (2)

WHAT YOU DO:
Start by introducing yourself and welcoming kids to your eGroup. Ask them about their week and interests. Use the following questions to generate discussion:
What’s something cool that happened this week?
What was the best part of your week?
Have you ________ (seen/eaten/listened to/read) any good _________ (movies/TV shows/food/music/books) lately?
What are you looking forward to next week?

Once you have five to six kids begin “Brains and Brawn.”
Kids can play this game in groups of eight. Use the second deck of cards to start a second group if needed.
Divide out the cards as evenly as possible, face down, to all kids. Kids make their own pile with the cards dealt to them.
Choose a kid to begin play. This kid starts by flipping over the top card of his or her pile to create a center pile. This pile should be in reach of all kids.
Rotating clockwise, kids continue flipping over their top card, adding to the center pile until a face card is placed on top of the center pile.
Kids should do the following when a face card is played:
Ace | Brain Work Out: All kids flip over the top card of their pile. The kid with the highest card gets to take the center pile and add it to the bottom of their pile. Ace has the highest value, two the lowest.
King | Brain Work Out: Kids can show their knowledge of the series virtue with this challenge by saying the series virtue. The first kid to put their hand on their head gets a chance to recite the series virtue to you. The first kid to do this successfully can take the center pile and add it to their pile. (The virtue is in the side bar on the left.)
Queen | Muscle Work Out: The kid with the quickest reflexes who puts their hand on the center pile first takes the center pile and adds it to their own pile.
Jack | Muscle Work Out: The kid who jumps to their feet the fastest gets to take the center pile and add it to their own pile.
If a kid runs out of cards, they can re-enter the game by being the fastest to respond when a face card is played.
The game ends when one kid has all the cards or if time is up, the kid with the most cards is the winner!

BIBLE CONNECT

COMMIT TO IT

WHAT YOU NEED: Bible story question sheets (4), plastic sleeves (4), dry erase markers (4), Bible story question answer sheet (1), secret word letters (4 sets)

WHAT YOU SAY:
“Welcome to eGroup! My name is _______ and I’m your eGroup leader! As an eGroup we will hang out together during Motion, hear stories from the Bible, learn what it means to live for Jesus, and play games!
We’re in a series called Work It Out, where we’re learning about commitment. Let’s dig into God’s Word together now and read about Jesus and His disciples talking about who Jesus is to them.”

WHAT YOU DO:
Have kids sit in a circle with their Bibles and instruct kids to turn to Matthew 16:13. NOTE: This may take time, but it helps kids learn skills for reading the Bible on their own. If needed, encourage kids to use the table of contents in their Bible, and then decide if the book is in the Old or New Testament.
Read Matthew 16:13-20 aloud.
Divide the group into four teams.
Give each team a Bible story question sheet in a protective plastic sleeve and a dry erase marker.
Have teams work together to answer the Bible story questions.
Once a team has answered all the questions correctly, give them a set of the secret word letters. You may need to scramble the letter cards before giving them to the kids in order to not give away the word.
Teams must unscramble the letters to make a word. The Week 3 secret word is TALKING.
The first team to figure out the secret word wins!
Option for younger kids: Answer the questions and unscramble the secret word letters as a group.
Have kids paperclip their secret word letters back together so they are ready for the next Worship Experience.

WHAT YOU SAY:
“Some people thought He was just a prophet. Others thought He was a gifted teacher who knew the Scriptures better than anyone, or that He was a healer who could perform amazing miracles. But He is more than that. Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus came to be our Savior! He came so we could have a relationship with God forever. Peter knew who Jesus was, and you and I do, too! We need to be ready to tell others about Jesus, God’s only Son, and to tell them about our heavenly Father, who gave His Son for us! Growing in our faith means to practice talking about God.”

YOU CONNECT

WHAT’S YOUR NAME?

WHAT YOU NEED: “Jesus is” name tags (1 per kid)

WHAT YOU SAY:
“To talk about God, we need to know who He is. Let’s practice by learning some words that describe Jesus.”

WHAT YOU DO:
Put a “Jesus is” name tag on each kid’s back.
Tell kids that the name tags list two things about Jesus. For example, “Jesus is … God’s Son.”
Explain to kids they will use the name tags for a game. There will be two rounds to the game.
Have the kids find a partner.
ROUND 1: The partners will look at each other’s name tags and then give clues to help each other figure out the BLUE word written on their name tag.
Tip for younger kids: Mingle among the kids and help with clue giving as needed.
Tell the kids that when both partners have correctly guessed the BLUE word on their name tag, they should have a seat.
Once all kids have guessed the blue word, have the kids stand up and find a new partner.
ROUND 2: The partners will look at each other’s name tags and then give clues to help each other figure out the GREEN word written on their name tag.
When both partners have correctly guessed the GREEN word on their name tag, they should have a seat.
Once all kids are seated, gather them in a circle and have the kids stick their name tags on the front of their shirts (partners may need to help with this).
Encourage the kids to keep their name tags and challenge them to tell one person something about Jesus.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
Who can you talk to about your faith? (an adult who believes in Jesus like your eGroup leader)
Who can you share with about what God is doing in your life?
Who in your life needs to hear about God for the first time?
Who can you invite to church?

WHAT YOU SAY:
“When it comes to talking about God, it takes practice. Jesus is our Savior! Jesus came to be our Messiah and to pay the price for our sin even when we didn’t deserve it. We can have a relationship with God forever when we choose to trust in Jesus. That is good news that everyone needs to hear. You can pray and ask God to help you know what to say as you talk to your friends and family about Him. Each time you talk about God, you’ll see that it becomes easier and easier to do.”

 

JOURNAL AND PRAYER

WHAT YOU NEED: eKidz Prayer Journal (or eKidz Prayer Journal page), pen

WHAT YOU SAY:
“Today we learned growing in our faith means talking about God to others. When you follow God’s instructions for your life, you can see God do great things through you!
I want you to share with me one person you will talk to about God this week. I’m going to write your name and what you share in our eKidz Prayer Journal. This week I will pray for you as you grow your faith in God.”

WHAT YOU DO:
Write down what kids share in your eKidz Prayer Journal. Take your eKidz Prayer Journal home with you and pray for your kids throughout the week.

SUGGESTED PRAYER:
“God, thank You so much for every single kid in this group. Thank You for all the things we’ve learned about You. Thank You for loving us and for sending Jesus so we could have a relationship with You. We want to tell others about You, so give us the courage to do that this week! We commit to letting others know how awesome You are. We love You. In Jesus name, amen.”

BIBLE CONNECT

WHAT YOU NEED: Bibles, Bible tool kits, deck of cards (1), “Work It Out” leader key (1)

WHAT YOU SAY:
“Our Bible verse, 1 Timothy 4:18, tells us having a healthy body has value but godliness, choosing to follow God and do what He says, has even more value. When you commit to following God, you will live the best kind of life!”

WHAT YOU DO:
Read the verse out loud: “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:18
Help kids look up the memory verse in their Bibles. Encourage them to use tools from the Bible tool kit to mark the verse in their Bible. Tell kids who didn’t bring a Bible they will receive a memory verse card during the Bring It! Challenge so they can practice it at home.
Ask kids if there are any words or phrases they don’t understand and explain them as needed.
Choose a memory verse activity: “Work It Out” or “Verse Practice.”

WORK IT OUT
Split your group into two teams.
Teams will earn points by completing “Work It Out” challenges. Some challenges work out the commitment to growing our faith with memory verse practice. Some challenges work out the body with exercises.
Teams can use their Bibles to complete verse related challenges.
Teams will take turns choosing a card from the deck to earn points. The number on the card is the number of points the team will earn only if the entire team chooses to complete the challenge. Refer to the “Work It Out” leader key for game challenges.
When all cards are gone or time is up, teams will add up the numbers on their playing cards. (Jack, Queen, King and Ace are worth 12 points.) The team with the most points wins.

VERSE PRACTICE
Use the following methods to help kids practice the memory verse:
REPEAT AFTER ME: Have kids repeat phrases of the verse after you.
PAIR UP: Have kids pair up to practice the verse together.
MOTIONS: Come up with motions to represent phrases in the verse. Practice it together.
