ENGAGE

ENGAGE is a time to welcome kids to your eGroup with a fun activity to help them feel comfortable and get to know each other.

SLAPJACK

NEED: decks of cards (2)

DO:

• Start by introducing yourself and welcoming kids to your eGroup. Ask them about their week and interests. Use the following questions to generate discussion:

  • What’s something cool that happened this week?
  • What was the favorite part of your week?
  • Have you ________ (seen/eaten/listened to/read) any good_________ (movies/TV shows/food/music/books) lately?
  • What are you looking forward to next week?
Once you have five to six kids begin playing “Slapjack.”
  • Seat kids in a circle. If you have more than six kids, split them into two groups. Other kids can be added to either group as they come.
  • Deal one deck of cards as evenly as possible among players; Stack any extra cards face up in the center of the group.
  • Each player should stack their cards facedown in front of them.
  • Instruct one player to start the fame by quickly turning the card from the top of their stack over onto the pile in the middle. The next player will do the same. Play continues this way until someone turns over a Jack.
  • When a Jack is turned over, players compete to be the first to slap the Jack to win the pile of cards. The winner places the pile of cards they won under the others in their stack.
  • If more than one player slaps the Jack, the player whose hand is at the bottom wins.
  • If a player is incorrectly slaps the pile when no Jack was played, the player must give a facedown penalty card to the player who played the card.
  • Players who have no more cards to play (or played joining the game after it has started) may try to slap their way back in.
  • The person who collects all the cards wins.
  • Variations to try as time allows:
    • Players can slap an Ace to win all of the cards from another player of their choosing.
    • Have each player “count” as he plays a card. The first player says “Ace,” the next says “two,” and so on up to “King.” If the card played matches what the player said then the first person to slap wins the pile.
    • Make the object of the game to be first to get rid of their cards. The last player to slap the Jack must take all the cards from the pile.

MEMORY VERSE

MEMORY VERSE is a time to introduce the series virtue and memory verse. Choose one of the memory verse activity options to help your kids practice the verse. After this activity, GO TO LARGE GROUP.

WHAT YOU NEED 

Bibles, Bible highlighters, memory verse cards, stopwatch

SAY: “Welcome to eGroup! My name is _______ and I’m your eGroup leader! As an eGroup we will hang out together during Motion, hear stories from the Bible, learn what it means to live for Jesus, and play games!

In our series Fear, Inc., we’re learning about being brave enough to take the next step, even when we’re afraid. Our Bible verse, Joshua 1:9, tells us we can be courageous because God is always with us. Let’s memorize this verse so we can remember God will be with us and help us be brave even when we feel afraid.”

DO:

  • Read the verse out loud: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9b
  • Help kids look up the memory verse in their Bibles. Encourage children to use the Bible highlighters to underline the verse in their Bible. Give a memory verse card to kids without a Bible.
  • Choose one of the memory verse activities: “Verse Practice” or “It’s All in the Timing.”

VERSE PRACTICE

Use the following methods to help kids practice the memory verse:

  • REPEAT AFTER ME: Have kids repeat each phrase of the verse after you
  • PAIR UP: After practicing the verse together, have kids pair up to practice the verse.
  • MOTIONS: Come up with motions to represent each phrase in the verse. Practice it together.

IT’S ALL IN THE TIMING

  • Explain that, at your signal, someone (anyone) should say the first word of Joshua 1:9b.
  • Then, in no particular order, another kid should say the second word.
  • Continue through the entire verse by having random kids speak one word at a time.
  • Make sure they know the goal is to avoid speaking at the same time as someone else. If that happens, the group must begin the verse again.
  • Once they’ve played the game successfully a couple of times, try a time challenge to see how quickly they can get through the whole verse by timing them with the stopwatch.

GROW #1

ACT FAST

In the BIBLE STORY activity, kids will act out the Bible story in decreasing amounts of time and learn about how God called Moses to do something he didn’t feel ready for.

SUGGESTED TIME

SUPPLIES

Bible, Bible story sheet, stopwatch

DO:

  • Have kids sit in a circle with their Bibles and instruct kids to turn to Joshua 5. NOTE: This may take time, but it helps kids learn skills for reading the Bible on their own. If needed, encourage kids to use the table of contents in their Bible and then decide if the book is in the Old or New Testament.
  • Read the Bible story aloud as directed on the Bible story sheet and encourage kids to following along.
  • Form groups of three to four. Be sure at least one kid in each group has a Bible.
  • Tell kids to work as a team to act out today’s story. The catch is they must be able to tell the entire story in exactly 60 seconds — no more, no less. Kids can use their Bibles to check for details.
  • Give teams a few minutes to get ready and then invite each group to perform their “fast act” as you time them.
  • Next, give teams another few minutes to figure out how to act out the story in exactly 30 seconds and let them take turns performing the story. If necessary, help kids think of ways to cut their time, such as not using full sentences, cutting out details, or eliminating dialogue.
  • Lastly, have teams tell the story in exactly 15 seconds.

SAY:  “In today’s Bible story, the people of Israel saw God’s amazing power show up in a tough and scary situation that was totally impossible to win on their own. God’s presence wasn’t visible to their eyes, but by faith, they believed that God was with them and took the next step in obedience. Like the Israelites, you can take the next step because God is with you.”

Discussion Questions:

  • “Has there ever been a time when God’s presence gave you

    the courage you needed to do something scary?”

  • “Why is it helpful to remember times God was with you and

    gave you courage in the past?”

  • “How can you remind yourself God is with you when you feel

    afraid?”

GROW #2

DON’T SAY IT!

In the APPLICATION activity, kids will think about how they can take the next step even when they aren’t completely ready.

SUPPLIES

Word cards

DO: 

  • Explain kids will be working together to tell a story. As you go around the circle, each kid will add one sentence to the story.
  • Tell kids the story will be all about taking care of their neighbors’ dog while the neighbors are out of town and hearing a scary noise coming from the neighbors’ basement.
  • Make sure kids know there are six words they CANNOT say as they tell the story. Read the words from the word cards as you lay them in the center of the eGroup area where everyone can see them.
  • Encourage the group to make an ‘X’ with their arms and a buzzer noise if someone uses one of those six words as they tell the story.
  • Begin the story with this sentence: “Last month my neighbors asked me for a favor.” Encourage kids to participate in building the story one sentence at a time without using the words on the word cards.

SAY: “It really didn’t make sense for me to ask you to tell a story about your neighbor’s dog without using the word ‘dog.’ That’s a silly example, but there will be times in our lives when we feel like God is asking us to do something that doesn’t make sense, like loving a bully or giving our money to someone else.

When God asks us to do something, He always has a perfect reason and He will be with us to help us through it. We can take the next step and choose to obey because we know God is with us!”

SUPPLIES
eKidz Prayer Journal, pens, painter’s tape, stopwatch

SAY: 

“Today we learned we can take the next step because God is with us. When you take that next step, you can see God do great things through you! Think about one situation where you can take a step of obedience this week because you know God is with you. I’m going to write down what you share in our eKidz Prayer Journal so we can pray for each other and I can continue praying for you as you take these next steps in courage.”

DO: 

Write down what kids share in your eKidz Prayer Journal. Take your eKidz Prayer Journal home with you and pray for your kids to take these next steps boldly throughout the week.

SUGGESTED PRAYER:

“Thank You, God, for all the promises You have given to us. Thank You for always being with us and for never leaving us. We know we can trust You no matter what! God, as we go through our week, help us feel Your presence and remind us that we can do what we should because You are always with us. (Name each kid in your group and pray a sentence prayer for each one based on what they shared.) In Jesus’ name, amen.”

SAY:

“The phrase ‘between a rock and a hard place’ means you feel stuck in an impossible situation where there is no good choice to make. That can be a scary feeling! Let’s see how you do choosing between two things that could be scary or not fun!”

DO: 

  • Give each kid a “Between” card to hold.
  • Count to ten while kids move quickly around the eGroup space. When you say, “Between a rock and a hard place!” kids have to link arms with the person closest to them and freeze.
  • Choose a pair and use their cards to fill in the blanks of this question: “What would you choose between _____ and ____?”
  • Encourage several kids to answer that question, then tell kids to let go of their partner and begin moving around the eGroup space again. Repeat as long as time allows.

BRING IT! CHALLENGE

The BRING IT! CHALLENGE is completed during Large Group.

TAKING THE NEXT STEP

Bring It! Challenge tracking sheet

SAY: 

“In Motion we want you to Bring It! to church each weekend! The Bring It! Challenge encourages you to bring yourself, your Bible, your friends, and scripture you’ve learned to Motion. Not only can you be rewarded for bringing it, but the Bring It! Challenge is a fun way to take the next step to grow and learn more about God and how He wants us to live.

During Fear, Inc., you can earn fun prizes each week that will remind you to take the next step! All you have to do is show me Joshua 1:9b in your Bible AND recite it from memory!”

DO: 

  • Encourage kids to show you Joshua 1:9b in their Bible AND recite the verse from memory. Kids must do both to earn a prize.
  • On the Bring It! Challenge tracking sheet, record the number of kids who recited the memory verse and/or brought a Bible. Give this sheet to your eTeam Leader at the end of the worship experience.
