THE BIG RACE

WHAT YOU NEED: giant game board, Christmas game pieces (16), game cards (32), die (1), green cards (12), yellow cards (12)

WHAT YOU DO:

  • Start by introducing yourself and welcoming kids to your eGroup. Ask them about their week and interests. Use the following questions to generate discussion:
  • What’s something cool that happened this week?
  • What was the best part of your week?
  • Have you ________ (seen/eaten/listened to/read) any good _________ (movies/TV shows/food/music/books) lately?
  • What are you looking forward to next week?

Once you have five to six kids begin “The Big Race.”

  • Spread the giant game board across the center of the eGroup space. Give each kid a Christmas game piece and tell them to place their game piece on any one of the starting spaces (a space with a Motion gear on it).
  • Shuffle the game cards. Give one game card to each kid.
  • Kids may not switch starting spaces after game cards have been given.
  • Explain the game cards feature something they might see around Elevation. Kids will race to get to the spot on the game board showing the same Elevation icon as the one on their game card. The first kid to reach the space with their Elevation icon wins!
  • Roll the die. All kids will move that many spaces on the game board from their starting space toward the Elevation icon shown on their game card.
  • Kids may move horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
  • Kids may only enter an icon space through the semi-circle entry points. Kids are allowed to use one move to enter an icon space through one door and another move to exit the icon space through the other door.
  • If kids land on a green space, they can choose if they want to take a green card. Green cards could be a bonus for themselves OR a bonus for another player.
  • If kids land on a yellow space, they can choose if they want to take a yellow card. Yellow cards could be a bonus for themselves OR a penalty for themselves.
  • Repeat until one kid reaches the icon shown on their game card. This kid is the winner!
  • Play again if time allows.

BIBLE STORY CONCENTRATION

WHAT YOU NEED: concentration cards (16), question card (1)

WHAT YOU SAY:

“Welcome to eGroup! My name is _______ and I’m your eGroup leader! As an eGroup we will hang out together during Motion, hear stories from the Bible, learn what it means to live for Jesus, and play games!

We’re in series called The Big Give where we’re learning about being generous. Let’s dig into God’s Word together now and read a parable Jesus told about a man who missed his chance to be generous.”

WHAT YOU DO:

  • Have kids sit in a circle with their Bibles and instruct kids to turn to Luke 12:13. NOTE: This may take time, but it helps kids learn skills for reading the Bible on their own. If needed, encourage kids to use the table of contents in their Bible and then decide if the book is in the Old or New Testament.
  • Read Luke 12:13-21 aloud.
  • Divide the group into four teams.
  • While laying out the concentration cards face-down in a 4×4 grid on the floor, explain kids will have to find the answers to Bible story questions on the concentration cards.
  • After hearing a question, teams will take turns turning over one concentration card and reading it aloud to the group.
  • If the card they turn over answers the question correctly, they can keep the card. If not, they will turn it back face-down in the same place they found it.
  • Remind kids to pay close attention to the cards other teams turn over so they can remember where those answers are later when they need them!
  • Read the first question aloud. Tell the first team to turn over one of the concentration cards and read the answer aloud. If it answers the question correctly, the team can keep it. If it doesn’t, they should put it back where they found it and let the next team turn over a concentration card. Repeat until the correct answer is found.
  • Repeat for each of the remaining questions. The team with the most cards after all questions have been answered wins!

WHAT YOU SAY:

“The man from our Bible story didn’t want to give up any of what he had. But having all that stuff didn’t bring him happiness. Jesus tells us through this parable: Don’t miss your chance to give. God wants you to give and be willing to share because when you’re generous, you show others that you love them and that they’re more important than having stuff. You also show them that God loves them and cares for them.”

DON’T MISS YOUR CHANCE

WHAT YOU NEED: white board (1), dry erase marker (1)

WHAT YOU DO:

    • Tell kids that they will take turns answering your questions with actions instead of words. The rest of the eGroup will guess what is being acted out.
      • Ask, “What are things you like to do at Christmas time?” (i.e. decorate the tree, hang stockings, shop for Christmas presents, etc.)
      • After the group guesses each kid’s answer, write it on the the board.
      • Ask, “What other things do you do in a normal day in addition to all of these Christmas activities?” (i.e. sports, school, homework, etc.)
      • After the group guesses each kid’s answer, write it on the the board.
      • Discuss with the group which of the things listed on the board relates to giving/generosity.

WHAT YOU SAY:

“When you look at all those things on the board, you can see that this is a very busy time of year. When we get really busy doing lots of things, it can be easy to forget to be generous. We shouldn’t miss our chance to give to other people just because we have a lot going on. We give people gifts on Christmas because God first gave us the gift of His Son. God gave us Jesus to show us that He loves us. Giving to other people is one way we show others that we love them. Don’t miss a chance to give and share God’s love.”

Discussion Questions:

    • Is it easy or hard for you to give to others? Why?
    • What’s something that’s easy for you to give? Why?
    • What’s something that’s hard for you to give? Why?
    • Why does God want us to give?
    • Erase the whiteboard. Discuss and write down ways to give to others. (donate toys, donate food, volunteer with your family, offer to help someone like a teacher or friends, share with others, etc.)

JOURNAL AND PRAYER

WHAT YOU NEED: eKidz Prayer Journal (or eKidz Prayer Journal page), pen

WHAT YOU SAY:

“Today we learned to not miss our chance to give. When you choose to seek out opportunities to be generous, you can see God do great things through you!

I want you to share one way you will give to others this week. If you need help, think about what we wrote down on the board together. I’m going to write your name and what you share in our eKidz Prayer Journal. This week I will pray that God will help you so you don’t miss your chance to give.”

WHAT YOU DO:

Write down what kids share in your eKidz Prayer Journal. Take your eKidz Prayer Journal home with you and pray for your kids throughout the week.

SUGGESTED PRAYER:

“God, thank You for Your love and generosity towards us! Thank You for giving us Your son Jesus. We ask that You would help us to be thankful for what we have and focus on what we can give, not how much we can get. Please help us see ways we can be generous so we don’t miss our chance to give. We love You. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

WHAT YOU NEED: Bibles, Bible tool kits, verse cards (4 sets of 20), verse mats (4), command card (1), clothespins (20), gift bows (4)

WHAT YOU SAY:

“Our Bible verse, 1 Timothy 6:18, tells us we should be generous in the way we act and give to others. We serve a generous God, and it gives Him joy when we choose to be generous toward others!”

WHAT YOU DO:

  • Read the verse out loud: “Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.” 1 Timothy 6:18
  • Help kids look up the memory verse in their Bibles. Encourage them to use tools from the Bible tool kit to mark the verse in their Bible. Tell kids who didn’t bring a Bible they will receive a memory verse card during the Bring It! Challenge so they can practice it at home.
  • Ask kids if there are any words or phrases they don’t understand and explain them as needed.
  • Choose a memory verse activity: “Put a Bow on It” or “Verse Practice.”

PUT A BOW ON IT

  • Split kids into four teams.
  • Give each team a verse mat. Explain kids will compete to be the first team to clip all five bows on their mat.
  • Give each team a set of word cards, face down, and tell teams to shuffle their word cards well. Once all teams are done shuffling, tell teams to turn their cards over and put them in order on the verse mat as fast as they can.
  • Use clothespins to clip over two bows on the fastest team’s verse mat.
  • Give each team a gift bow.
  • Read the instructions on the command card one at a time, encouraging kids to put a bow on the word you describe. Use a clothespin to clip over one bow on their verse mat each time a team finishes the task first.
  • The first team to get all five bows clipped wins!

VERSE PRACTICE

  • Use the following methods to help kids practice the memory verse:
    • REPEAT AFTER ME: Have kids repeat phrases of the verse after you.
    • PAIR UP: Have kids pair up to practice the verse together.
    • MOTIONS: Come up with motions to represent phrases in the verse. Practice it together.
