Motion eGroup Week of April 15

GOAL!

Virtue: Humility: Putting others first by giving up what you think you deserve.
Main Point: I can put others first because Jesus put me first.
Bible Story: Jesus is Crucified, Buried and Resurrected.
Bible Passage: John 18:12-20:23

Engage

GOAL

WHAT YOU NEED: finger soccer ball (1), finger shoes (2), game cards (15)

WHAT YOU DO:
Start by introducing yourself and welcoming kids to your eGroup. Ask them about their week and interests. Use the following questions to generate discussion:
-What’s something cool that happened this week?
-What was the best part of your week?
-Have you ________ (seen/eaten/listened to/read) any good _________ (movies/TV shows/food/music/books) lately?
-What are you looking forward to next week?

Once you have five to six kids begin playing “GOAL.”
-Divide kids into two to four teams with no more than four kids per team. Seat teams in lines.
-Explain the rules and procedures for GOAL:
-Teams will compete to make different types of shots at the goal with a finger soccer ball while wearing finger shoes. Each time a player misses a shot, their team will receive a letter from the word GOAL. Once a team has received all four letters, they are out. The last team left in the game wins!
-Begin a round by reading a game card. The game card will give instructions for a specific type of shot kids will take with the finger soccer ball.
-Choose one kid from the back of a line to form the “goal” in front of the rest of the group. The kid forms the goal by creating an ‘L’ with the pointer finger and thumb on each hand, putting their thumbs together, and then turning their hands down so that their pointer fingers rest on the floor.
-One at time, the kid at the front of each line will put on the finger shoes and take the specified shot at the goal. If they miss, their team earns a letter. After a kid from each team has taken the shot, send those kids to the back of their lines.
-Begin a new round by choosing a new kid to form the goal and then turning over a new game card. Follow the instructions again with the kids who are now at the front of each line. Repeat until only one team is left in the game and declare them the winners!

Bible Story Activity

BIBLE #GOALS

WHAT YOU NEED: Bible, Bible story sheet, soccer field game board (1), soccer ball cards (10), answer card (1), dry erase board, dry erase marker

WHAT YOU SAY:
“Welcome to eGroup! My name is _______ and I’m your eGroup leader! As an eGroup we will hang out together during Motion, hear stories from the Bible, learn what it means to live for Jesus, and play games!

We’re in a series called GOOOOOAL, where we’re learning what it means to show humility. Let’s dig into God’s Word together now and learn what humility looks like from Jesus’ example!

WHAT YOU DO:
-Have kids sit in a circle with their Bibles and instruct kids to turn to John 18. NOTE: This may take time, but it helps kids learn skills for reading the Bible on their own. If needed, encourage kids to use the table of contents in their Bible and then decide if the book is in the Old or New Testament.
-Read John 18:12-20:23 aloud as directed on the Bible story sheet.
-Divide kids into two teams.
-Place the soccer field game board in the center of the group and spread the soccer ball cards across the game board.
-Explain kids will choose a soccer ball card and answer the question from the Bible story from the back of the card. If they answer correctly, their team has scored a “goal!” Keep track of the score by tallying it on the dry erase board.
-Each soccer ball card has a number. The answer for each question can be found by the corresponding number on the answer card.
-Ask a kid to choose a soccer ball card and answer the question on the back. If they get it right, give the team a point on the dry erase board. If they get it wrong, give the other team the chance to answer the question and steal the point.
-Repeat until all statements have been read.
-eGroup Leader Tip: Be sure a different kid has the opportunity to answer each time their team chooses a soccer ball card.

WHAT YOU SAY:
“Jesus was the ultimate example of putting others first. Jesus—the Son of God who created the world— humbled Himself, came to earth as a man, lived, died on a cross for our sin, was buried, and came back to life so that you and I can have a forever relationship with Him. God loves us and values us so much that He put US first! Since Jesus put us first, we should follow His example by putting others first.”

HOW FAR WILL YOU GIVE?

WHAT YOU NEED: painter’s tape, Sharpie marker

WHAT YOU DO:
-Tape five parallel lines about a foot apart from each other. Instruct all kids to line up behind the last line.
-Explain the lines represent people with a different level of relationship to them. The line closest to them would represent people they have a close relationship with. The lines farther away represent people they don’t have close relationships with.
-As you explain which group each line represents, write the title on the corresponding tapeline, starting with the farthest from the kids and finishing with the one they’re standing behind: strangers, acquaintances, friends, family, yourself. (eGL Tip: You may need to explain an “acquaintance” is someone they recognize but don’t know well.)
-Tell kids as you list each object, they’ll stand behind the line representing who they would be willing to give the item to. They should pick the line representing the farthest group of people they’d be willing to give that object away to.
-After moving for each object, kids will return to standing behind the line representing “yourself.”
-Read the following objects aloud and encourage kids to move to the appropriate line: one dollar, a soccer ball, a sandwich, a coat you’ve outgrown, five dollars, an ice cream cone, a new shirt, a video game, twenty dollars, a smartphone, one hundred dollars.

WHAT YOU SAY:
“What we will give up for people is directly related to how much we love them. All of you would be far more likely to give something to people you love more, such as your family and friends. This tells us something important about the Easter story. It tells us how much Jesus loves us. Jesus was willing not just to give us some ‘stuff’ like what was on that list. He gave His life for us. He did that because of His amazing love for you and for me.”

Discussion Questions:
-“What have you given up to help someone else?”
-“How does knowing Jesus gave up everything for you affect what you’re willing to give up for others?”
-“What is one thing you could give up for a stranger? An acquaintance? A friend? A family member?”

JOURNAL AND PRAYER

WHAT YOU NEED: eKidz Prayer Journal (or eKidz Prayer Journal page), pen

WHAT YOU SAY:
“Today we learned we can put others first because Jesus put us first. When you choose to put others first, you can see God do great things through you!

Remembering Jesus gave up everything to put you first, I want you to think of one way you can put someone else first this week. I’m going to write your name and what you share in our eKidz Prayer Journal so I can pray for you this week.”

WHAT YOU DO:
Write down what kids share in your eKidz Prayer Journal. Take your eKidz Prayer Journal home with you and pray for your kids throughout the week.

SUGGESTED PRAYER:
“Thank You, God, that You love us more than we can imagine. You love us so much that You put us first and sent Jesus to be our Savior. Help us be humble and make the choice to put others first, even if it’s hard. Help us make the choice to believe in You and follow You no matter what. We love You, Lord. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.”

Memory Verse Activity

WHAT YOU NEED: Bibles, leader card, timing device, dry erase board, dry erase marker

WHAT YOU SAY:
“Our Bible verse, Philippians 2:3, tells us we shouldn’t do anything to serve ourselves. Everything we do should reflect how much we value others!”

WHAT YOU DO:
-Read the verse out loud: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” Philippians 2:3
-Help kids look up the memory verse in their Bibles. Encourage children to use tools from the Bible tool kit to mark the verse in their Bible. Tell kids who didn’t bring a Bible they will receive a memory verse card at the end of the worship experience so they can remember to practice it at home.
-Ask kids if there are any words or phrases they don’t understand and explain them. Use the New Living Translation to explain the meaning of the verse: “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.”
-Choose one of the memory verse activities: “Verse Search” or “Verse Practice.”

VERSE SEARCH
-Split kids into teams of two to four kids. Each team will need a Bible.
-Explain kids will race to find the verse in the Bible and then find a specific word or phrase according to your instructions.
NOTE: It’s fine for kids to have the verse highlighted or underlined in their Bible, but kids cannot mark the page itself.
-Once they have found the word or phrase from the verse in the Bible, kids should stand and pretend to kick a soccer ball.
-Each team that finds the word or phrase in 30 seconds gets a point. The team that finds it first gets a bonus point.
-Kids will close their Bibles and then find the verse again for each new instruction.
-Read an instruction from the leader card. Use your timing device to give kids 30 seconds to find the word or phrase.
-As kids find it, they should stand and pretend to kick a soccer ball. Check to see if they are pointing to the correct word/phrase and award points as described above. Points can be recorded on the dry erase board.
-The team with the most points after all instructions have been read wins!

VERSE PRACTICE
Use the following methods to help kids practice the memory verse:
-REPEAT AFTER ME: Have kids repeat each phrase of the verse after you
-PAIR UP: Have kids pair up to practice the verse together.
-MOTIONS: Come up with motions to represent phrases in the verse. Practice it together.

Bring it! Challenge

BRING IT! CHALLENGE

WHAT YOU NEED: Bring It! Challenge tracking sheet, Bring It! Challenge stickers, memory verse cards

WHAT YOU SAY:
“In Motion we want you to Bring It! to church each weekend! The Bring It! Challenge encourages you to bring yourself, your Bible, and scripture you’ve learned to Motion. Not only can you be rewarded for bringing it, but the Bring It! Challenge is a fun way to grow and learn more about God and how He wants us to live.

This is the last week to complete the Bring It! Challenge and earn a prize during our GOOOOOAL! series. All you have to do is FIND Philippians 2:3 in your Bible, RECITE it from memory, and SAY what our series virtue, humility, means!”

WHAT YOU DO:
-Encourage kids to show you Philippians 2:3 in their personal Bible AND recite the verse from memory, then ask them to tell you what humility means. (Use the virtue definition found in the sidebar or on the back of the memory verse cards as a reference.) Kids must do all three things to complete the challenge.
-Give any kids who complete the challenge a Bring It! Challenge sticker and tell them the sticker will allow them to choose a prize as they are dismissed at the end of the experience.
-On the Bring It! Challenge tracking sheet, record the number of kids who recited the memory verse, recited the virtue, and/or brought a Bible, as well as the number of stickers earned.
-As kids are dismissed, give each kid who did not bring a Bible a memory verse card so they can prepare to recite the verse and virtue, and remind them to bring their Bible with them to Motion next time!
