Motion eGroup Week of February 25

Behind the Scenes

Virtue: Love: Choosing to treat others the way you want to be treated.
Main Point: Love others because they matter to God.
Bible Story: The Good Samaritan
Bible Passage: Luke 10:27-37
Memory Verse: “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” 1 John 4:10, NIV

ENGAGE

COPY THAT

WHAT YOU NEED: dry erase sleeves (2), “Copy That” page, dry erase markers (2), emoji cards (2 sets)

BEFORE KIDS ARRIVE: Insert each “Copy That” page in a dry erase sleeve. The other side of the page will be used for the Bible story activity, so be sure kids use the side labeled “Copy That” for this activity.

WHAT YOU DO:

  • Start by introducing yourself and welcoming kids to your eGroup. Ask them about their week and interests. Use the following questions to generate discussion:
  • What is something you love to ______ (read/eat/do/play)?
  • What’s something cool that happened this week?
  • What was the best part of your week?
  • Have you ________ (seen/eaten/listened to/read) any good _________ (movies/TV shows/food/music/books) lately?
  • What are you looking forward to next week?

Once you have five to six kids begin playing “Copy That.”

  • Seat kids in a circle. If you have more than eight kids, split them into two groups and give each group a separate set of supplies.
  • Give groups a dry erase sleeve with a “Copy That” page, a dry erase marker, and a set of emoji cards.
  • Choose one kid to be Artist 1 and another kid to be Artist 2. Tell Artist 1 to take the emoji cards and Artist 2 to take the dry erase sleeve and dry erase marker.
  • Have Artist 1 sit behind Artist 2’s back. The rest of the group will sit in front of Artist 2.
  • Explain kids will be competing to guess what emoji Artist 2 is drawing on the dry erase sleeve.
  • Artist 1 will look at the emoji on one of the emoji cards and draw it using their finger on Artist 2’s back.
  • Artist 2 will try to draw this emoji on the dry erase sleeve as Artist 1 draws it on their back.
  • Artists 1 and 2 may not talk at any point during the game.
  • The first kid to guess the emoji correctly takes the emoji card. The kid holding the most emoji cards at the end wins the game!

BIBLE STORY

FILM STRIPS

WHAT YOU NEED: Bible, dry erase sleeves (6), dry erase markers (6), film strip pages (6)

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY: Ensure each dry erase sleeve has a film strip page in it. (The reverse sides of some of these pages were used in the Engage activity.)

WHAT YOU SAY:

“Welcome to eGroup! My name is _______ and I’m your eGroup leader! As an eGroup we will hang out together during Motion, hear stories from the Bible, learn what it means to live for Jesus, and play games!

We’re wrapping up our series called Behind the Scenes, where we’ve been learning about how to show love God’s way. Let’s dig into God’s Word together now and learn how we can show love to others because they matter to God!”

WHAT YOU DO: 

  • Have kids sit in a circle with their Bibles and instruct kids to turn to Luke 10. NOTE: This may take time, but it helps kids learn skills for reading the Bible on their own. If needed, encourage kids to use the table of contents in their Bible and then decide if the book is in the Old or New Testament.
  • Explain to kids that a law expert was questioning Jesus about how to inherit eternal life, then read Luke 10:27-37 aloud.
  • Divide kids into six groups. Give each group a dry erase sleeve with a film strip page in it and a dry erase marker.
  • Explain each group has a part of the story on their film strip page. They are responsible to illustrate their part of the story like a frame in a film strip.
  • Encourage kids to take turns in their group so everyone can help draw the picture. Groups should discuss what to include in their picture, then each kid can draw one thing before passing the marker to someone else.
  • If time allows, line up the completed film strip frames in order and use them to review the Bible story.

WHAT YOU SAY:

“When Jesus told stories or parables, He wasn’t just sharing a story. He was helping people understand how to live out their faith in real ways. In this parable, we can learn to love others because they matter to God. The Samaritan didn’t divide people into categories of people who were like him and people who weren’t. He saw someone hurting and offered help. God wants us to see people that way, too. God made every person. His love chooses to put others first, so we should love in the same way.”

GROW

WHO IS YOUR NEIGHBOR?

WHAT YOU NEED: circle sheets (1 per kid), pens (1 per kid)

WHAT YOU DO:

  • Give each kid a circle sheet and a pen.
  • Tell kids to write the names of people they care about inside the circle. Encourage them to write as many names as they can think of. You can suggest they think of friends, family, teachers, coaches, or teammates.
  • When they are finished, point out that the people in their circle aren’t the only people they should show love to. The traveler wouldn’t have been in the Samaritan’s circle, but the Samaritan showed him love anyway.
  • Tell kids to think about people who are outside of their circle. Ask if anyone would like to share about a time they remember treating someone differently because they were outside the circle. (Remind kids not to use people’s names. Guide them not to gossip about anyone, but to focus on who they consider “in” their circle or “out” of it and how they treat those people.)

WHAT YOU SAY:

“The people in the circle are people who are like us or who LIKE us. They might be our friends, family members, or older kids who we think are cool. These are the people anyone would expect us to love. But the traveler was someone NO ONE would have expected the Samaritan to help.

It’s good to do good things for people we like, for people who are like us, and for people who are kind to us. But that’s not what this story is about. The kind of love Jesus showed here is about people OUTSIDE our circle of love. We should love people who it would be ‘normal’ for us to dislike or ignore. We aren’t supposed to just love others because we like them or they like us. We are supposed to love others because they matter to God. And everyone you will EVER meet matters to God!”

Discussion Questions:

  • “Look back on this past week. Did you act like you really believe God created everyone equal and loves us all the same?”
  • “Why is it hard to love people outside our circle?”
  • “How can you show love to someone outside your circle this week?”

JOURNAL AND PRAYER

WHAT YOU NEED: eKidz Prayer Journal, pen

WHAT YOU SAY:

“Today we learned we should love others because they matter to God. When you choose to show love to everyone, you can see God do great things through you! I want you to share one way you will show love to someone outside your circle this week. I’m going to write your name and what you share in our eKidz Prayer Journal so I can pray for you as you intentionally love others this week.”

WHAT YOU DO: 

Write down what kids share in your eKidz Prayer Journal. Take your eKidz Prayer Journal home with you and pray for your kids throughout the week.

SUGGESTED PRAYER:

“Dear God, You love us so much. And you always love us no matter what. Help us to show that same unconditional love to others, not because they’ve done anything for us, but because they matter to you. Help us to treat others the way we want to be treated this week. We love You, Jesus. Amen.”

MEMORY VERSE

WHAT YOU NEED: Bibles, Bible tool kit, cups (10), ping pong balls (4), phrase cards (7)

WHAT YOU SAY:

“Our Bible verse, 1 John 4:10, tells us God defined what true love is when He sent His Son to die in our place. We don’t have to die for someone to show them we love them, but God does call us to sacrifice what’s fun or easy for us and instead focus on how we can show love to others.”

WHAT YOU DO:

  • Read the verse out loud: “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” 1 John 4:10
  • Help kids look up the memory verse in their Bibles. Encourage children to use tools from the Bible tool kit to mark the verse in their Bible. Tell kids who don’t have a Bible they will receive a memory verse card at the end of the worship experience so they can still practice it at home.
  • Choose one of the memory verse activities: “Ping Pong Verse Bounce” or “Verse Practice.”

PING PONG VERSE BOUNCE

  • Split kids into four teams. Give each team a ping pong ball.
  • Arrange the cups in a pyramid formation (a row of four cups, then a row of three, then two, then one). Cups should NOT be arranged according to color (all red in one row, all blue in another, etc.).
  • Encourage each team to form a line on a different side of the pyramid. The first kid in line should hold the ping pong ball. Place a stack of phrase cards by the front of each line.
  • Explain kids will take turns holding their team’s ping pong ball out over the cups and dropping it into a cup. Teams will earn or lose phrase cards according to which color cup the ball lands in. As they earn phrase cards, they can take them from their stack at the front of the line and form a new stack at the back of the line.
  • Red cup: Earn a phrase card.
  • Green cup: Return a phrase card.
  • Gold cup: Choose another team to earn a phrase card.
  • Silver cup: Earn two phrase cards.
  • Tell the first kid in each line to stretch their arm straight out in front of them over the cups and drop it, then instruct them to follow the directions for the cup their ball landed in. That kid will then give the ball to the next kid and go to the back of the line, taking a phrase card with them to the back if applicable.
  • If the ping pong ball does not land in a cup, the kid may retrieve the ball and try one additional time before passing the ball to the next kid in line.
  • Repeat until all phrase cards have been earned.
  • Once a group has earned all seven of their phrase cards, they should arrange the cards to form the verse in order. The first team to complete this wins!

VERSE PRACTICE

    • Use the following methods to help kids practice the memory verse:
      • REPEAT AFTER ME: Have kids repeat each phrase of the verse after you
      • PAIR UP: After practicing the verse together, have kids pair up to practice the verse.
      • MOTIONS: Come up with motions to represent phrases in the verse. Practice it together.

BRING IT! CHALLENGE

WHAT YOU NEED: Bring It! Challenge tracking sheet, Bring It! Challenge stickers, memory verse cards

WHAT YOU SAY:

“In Motion we want you to Bring It! to church each weekend! The Bring It! Challenge encourages you to bring yourself, your Bible, and scripture you’ve learned to Motion. Not only can you be rewarded for bringing it, but the Bring It! Challenge is a fun way to grow and learn more about God and how He wants us to live.

During Behind the Scenes, you’ve been able to earn fun prizes each week. This is the last week for you to FIND 1 John 4:10 in your Bible, RECITE it from memory, and SAY what our series virtue, Love, means!”

WHAT YOU DO:

  • Encourage kids to show you 1 John 4:10 in their personal Bible AND recite the verse from memory, then ask them to tell you what love means. (Use the virtue definition found in the sidebar or on the back of the memory verse cards as a reference.) Kids must do all three things to earn a prize.
  • Give any kids who complete the challenge a Bring It! Challenge sticker and tell them the sticker will allow them to choose a prize as they are dismissed at the end of the experience.
  • On the Bring It! Challenge tracking sheet, record the number of kids who recited the memory verse, recited the virtue, and/or brought a Bible, as well as the number of stickers earned. Give this sheet to your eTeam Leader at the end of the worship experience.
  • As kids are dismissed, give each kid who did not bring a Bible a memory verse card so they can continue to think about what we’ve learned this month.
