Rise Above

Main Point: Rise Above: Doing what God says, even when it’s tough.
Bible Story: God Appoints Gideon
Bible Passage: Judges 6:3-16a

Chatterboxer Intro

“Welcome to Motion! We’re so glad you’re here. Stand to your feet and high-five a neighbor. When I say ‘Boxing Glove,’ you say ‘Rise Above!’ Boxing Glove!

(encourage kids to respond with ‘Rise Above’!)

This week we begin a series called Rise Above – a series all about how we can do what God says, even when it’s tough. In order to warm up for the day, we’re going to do an exercise where you get to box, just like the main character in this series. As the punches come down the screen, you’ll have to dodge the strikes and punch back at just the right time. If you see a punch coming from the left or right, you’ll dodge in the opposite direction. If you see a foot coming from the bottom of the screen, you’ll have to jump over it. If you see a karate chop coming from the top of the screen, you’ll have to block the attack like this:

(cross arms in front of your face)

Let’s get warmed up!”

(host should stay on stage and participate with the kids)

Series Intro

“Great job, Motion! Everybody can have a seat because it’s time for us to duck and weave into our new series, Rise Above!

(wait for kids to be seated)

Motion, what if I told you there was a way that you could rise above the hurtful things we think or the hurtful things people say? During our series called Rise Above, we’re going to find out how to listen to God’s voice above all others. We’ll be following a high schooler named Daniel as he tries to rise above the voices he hears everyday and as he learns to listen to God’s voice even when it’s difficult. Lets check out Rise Above!”

Dismissal to eGroups

“I am so excited about what happens next! You won’t want to miss the next and final episode of Rise Above, so make sure you’re here next week!

Before you head back to eGroup, I want you to answer a few questions with your eGroup leader. Take ten seconds and circle around them now.

(give kids time to group up)

Okay, first question: How would you have responded if someone was bullying you like those kids were bullying Daniel? Discuss that question now.

(give kids two minutes to answer the question)

Next question: How could you help somebody if you saw them being bullied by another kid? Discuss that question now.

(Give kids two minutes to answer the question)

Final question: How does God say we should treat others? Discuss that question now.

(Give kids two minutes to answer the question)

Great job, Motion! It’s time to head back to your eGroups so you can learn how to rise above all the negative voices you might hear. When I call your eGroup leaders’ name, you can stand up and follow them back to your eGroup!”

(dismiss kids back to their eGroup)

VIP Welcome

“Welcome back from your eGroups! Before we have some more fun, let’s take a moment and welcome a special group of people who are here for the first time today. Motion, help me welcome our VIPs!

(initiate applause)

If it’s your first time here, we consider you a VIP – a very important person! VIPs, turn your attention to the screen because I’ve got some special instructions just for you.

(refer to the screen)

This is a VIP lanyard. If you’re a VIP, you’re wearing this around your neck right now.

[VIP Slide – Lanyard]

When you leave Motion, you need to take that lanyard to the orange tent called the Welcome Area.

Once you get to the Welcome Area, show them your lanyard and they will give you a gift!

Worship Intro

“We’re excited to met our VIPs today, just like we’re excited to sing songs of praise and worship to our amazing God. We’re going to do that in just a moment, but first, check out this video!”

Game Setup – King of the Ring

“Great job, Motion! You can all have a seat.

(wait for kids to be seated)

During today’s episode of Rise Above, Daniel got knocked down by Ted’s taunts. After he remembered how his coach encouraged him, he was able to quickly get back up and defeat Ted’s negative words. During today’s game, we’re going to see how quickly you can ‘Rise Above’ and get back to your feet.

Here’s how the game works: everybody begins the game seated on the floor. When I say ‘Rise Above,’ you’ll quickly stand to your feet. The last person to stand up is out and will stay seated for the rest of the game. Now, during this game, I’m going to try and trip you up by saying things like ‘Fries Above’ or ‘Rise Alone.’ If you move when I say one of those things, you’ll also be out and have to stay seated until I say so. eGroup leaders, you’ll help me keep track of who’s still in the game and who’s out. Let’s get ready to play ‘Rise Above!’”

“Great job during the game, Motion! Everybody can have a seat because I’ve got a gift coming your way in just a moment.

(wait for kids to be seated)

Motion, the series  is so important for you to remember as you begin the school year. The words “Rise Above” can be a reminder for you to rise above the negative voices you may hear and to remember that we should do what God says, even when it’s tough. To help you remember this truth, we wanted to give you a gift – a Rise Above t-shirt. This week, I want you all to wear your Rise Above t-shirt when you go to school. If anyone asks what your shirt means, you’ll have the chance to tell them about this awesome series and you can invite them back next week! How cool is that?

Each one of you will walk out today wearing this awesome Rise Above t-shirt. Circle around your eGroup leaders now and as soon as you receive a t-shirt, you can put it on over the outfit you’re wearing.

(work with eGroup leaders to pass out t-shirts)

You all look great! Let’s of our Rise Above chant together. Repeat after me:

Boxing Glove!

(wait for kids to respond)

Rise Above!”

(wait for response)
