Welcome /  Worship Intro

“Merry Christmas and welcome to Motion! I’m so excited you’re all here to celebrate with us during the best time of the year! We’re here today to celebrate the birth of Jesus and to learn how we can share God’s story with everyone.

During our Christmas series, we have the opportunity to sing some awesome music that tells the story of Jesus’ birth. Stand to your feet and let’s sing ‘Angels We Have Heard On High!’”

Game Set Up – Shoot A Bow At It

“Great job, Motion! Everybody have a seat because it’s time for us to talk about our incredible, ridiculously huge Motion Christmas game!

(give kids time to be seated)

If you’ll notice, there’s been quite a few Christmas decorations put on stage, namely I want you to notice the addition of these giant Christmas trees decorated with beautiful bows and ornaments. In our final game of this year you and your game group, your group of 10 friends, will be shooting arrows from these replica bow and arrow sets at the Christmas decorations. For every ornament or bow you knock off the tree, your group will earn points for the round. Each bow you knock off will learn your group 2 points. Each ornament you knock off will earn your group 5 points. Finally, if your group can manage to knock the star off the tree, you’ll earn your group 20 points.

Now here’s the trick with this game: every single kid in here will receive a bow and arrow to shoot, and everybody in the room will be shooting at once. In just a few minutes we’re going to have everybody notch an arrow, take aim, and send a flurry of arrows towards the Christmas trees. We’ll play three rounds of this game and at the end of each round we’ll count up how many items fell of the trees and award points accordingly.

Now, you may be thinking ‘But the trees can’t defend themselves! These poor trees have no one to protect them!’ Don’t worry Motion, because the defender of Christmas is here to stop your attempts to shoot these poor, innocent trees. Motion, I’m proud to present to you the Evergreen Avenger, The Tannenbaum Treant, Choppy The Christmas Tree!

(Choppy comes to the stage with a fight music bed playing in the background)

Choppy will be trying to knock down as many arrows as possible trying to hit his decorated brothers and sisters, so make sure you’re trying to aim around Choppy, not through him.

Ok, everybody form stop your game groups and each game group needs to line up in front of a tree. Start moving now!

(form kids into game groups. Once kids are in game groups, hand each kid a bow and three arrows)

Now Motion, do NOT shoot the bows and arrows until I say so. If you shoot it, you won’t get the arrow back and you won’t get any points until I say Go anyways.

Now, everybody form a shooting line directly in front of your group’s Christmas tree and when I say ‘Go!’ let one arrow fly towards your targets. 1…2…3… Go!

(All kids should fire one arrow per round. Once one arrow is fired, have kids reset their bows and arrows and prepare for the next round. Have eGroup leaders count up points for each game group. Record points on the Talking Point cards.)

Ok, Motion! We’ve played three rounds of this game and it looks like despite Choppy’s best efforts, the ________ game group won! Everybody give them a hand!

(initiate applause)

This game’s not over yet, though. We’ve got one final round of today’s game, so in just a moment I’ll return one arrow to each of you. We’re going to choose this one tree here in the middle of the stage and everybody in the room is going to work together to knock the star off the tree. If you can do it, then every kid in here is going to earn a special Christmas gift. Are you all ready to take one final shot at the tree?

(Kids will take one final shot a the tree. If the kids fail to knockdown the star, then Choppy comes in and saves the day by knocking down the star.)

Congratulations! Everybody’s earned a delicious Christmas snack you can pick up on the way out today! Put your hands together one more time for yourselves and for our friend Choppy the Christmas Tree!

(initiate applause, Choppy leaves the stage)

Game – Shoot A Bow At It

Pastor Christmas Story Video Intro

“Incredible job during today’s game, Motion! Later today you’ll all receive your Christmas snack as a gift for winning today’s game.

Last week we learned about the miracle of Jesus’ birth inside of a tiny barn in Bethlehem, and this week we’re going to see what it could have been like back then, courtesy of Pastor Steven, and his family. Take a look at the screen!”

(volunteers should use this time to remove game supplies from the stage and kids’ hands if not done already)

252 Story Intro

“It’s incredible to hear that God sent His to show everyone how much He loves us. What amazes me though, is that the story doesn’t stop in Bethlehem. The story of Jesus’ birth reached far and wide and even reached shepherds who were taking care of their sheep far outside of the city. Check out the screen!”

252 Story

Connect Questions

“God could have chosen anyone to be the first to hear about Jesus. He could have told the rich and famous. He could have sent an angel to Caesar. God could have told the high priest. But God chose shepherds to hear the message first. Shepherds were considered nobodies. They were looked down on. They were expendable. No one would choose to give shepherds such an important message.

But God did. And they took that message and took to the streets to make sure that everyone in Bethlehem heard that Jesus—the promised Savior of the world—was finally here!

The Christmas story isn’t reserved for just the cool kids, the rich, or the powerful. It’s for everyone, which brings us to today’s main point. Everyone say it with me:

I can have joy because God’s story is for everyone.

(Refer to the main point slide on the screen and have kids say the main point with you. Have them repeat it if necessary.)

Now Motion, it’s time for us to circle around our eGroup leaders to answer a few questions. Do that now.

(give kids time to circle around eGroup leaders)

First question: Why was it surprising the angels came to tell the shepherds about Jesus? Discuss that now.

(give kids two minutes to answer the question)

Second question: How does it make you feel when you get included in something special? When was the last time that happened to you? Discuss those questions now.

(give kids two minutes to answer the question)

Now Motion, our final question is our ‘See What God Can Do Through You’ question which is all about how you can use the story of Christmas to show God’s love to the people around you. Today’s question is: Who do you need to tell the story of Christmas to? When are you going to do it? Discuss that question now.”

(give kids two minutes to answer the question)

Dismissal To eGroups

“Great job, Motion! Everybody stay standing because it’s time for us to head back to our eGroups. When I call your eGroup leaders’ name, you can follow them back.”

(dismiss kids back to eGroups)

eGroups

VIP Welcome

“Welcome back from your eGroups! Before we continue, I wanted to take a moment and welcome some very special guests who came to visit us for the first time today. Motion, help me welcome our VIPs!

(initiate applause)

If it’s your first time here, we consider you a VIP – a very important person! VIPs, turn your attention to the screen because I’ve got some special instructions just for you.

(refer to the screen)

This is a VIP lanyard. If you’re a VIP, you’re wearing this around your neck right now.

[VIP Slide – Lanyard]

When you leave Motion, you need to take that lanyard to the orange tent called the Welcome Area.

[VIP Slide – Welcome Area]

Once you get to the Welcome Area, show them your lanyard and they will give you a gift!

[VIP Slide – Gift]

Let’s review.

[VIP Slide – All Combined]

VIP Lanyard + Welcome Area = Gift.”

Dismissal to Next Level eGroups

“Now Motion, some of you probably had questions during that video and that’s completely normal. If you had questions, your eGroup leader will hand you a pass to a Next Level eGroup where we can help answer any questions you may have. eGroup leaders, do that now.

(give eGroup leaders time to hand out Next Level invitations)

If you received a Next Level Invitation, you can follow Mr. / Mrs. ____________ to the Next Level eGroup. Do that now.

(give Next Level kids a chance to leave with the leader before continuing)

Oldman Spielman’s Christmas Adventure Setup

“Motion, we’ve had so much fun today and even though it’s almost time for you to head home to spend Christmas with your family and friends, I wanted to leave you with one final Christmas treasure – a Christmas classic movie called Oldman and Spielman’s Christmas Adventure starring none other than our dear friend Dr. Barry Oldman. As we check out our movie, we’re going to pass out the Christmas candy you earned from winning our massive Christmas game earlier in the day. We’ll hand the candy to your eGroup leaders and then we’ll turn down the lights as we tune in to our Motion holiday classic.

(hand out Christmas candy to eGroup leaders, start movie)
