Welcome / Video Intro

“Happy New Year and welcome back to Motion for our brand new series called Brain Games! All month long we’ll be learning who God is and how He loves us. God says that His ‘…word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.’ That means the more we learn who God is and what He says, the more we can learn how to live better, smarter, and healthier lives.

Before we dive into today’s Bible story, I wanted to check in with one of my friends who got a job interview at a local game store, but it looks like things aren’t exactly as they seem. Take a look at the screen!”

Connect Questions

“It was the wise men’s pursuit of knowledge that led them to the birthplace of Jesus. Because they had studied, they knew what it meant when God caused a star to shine so brightly in the sky. And once they arrived in Jerusalem, they continued to ask questions to learn the exact location of the newborn king: Jesus.

Here is the thing: like the wise men, you can know Jesus by studying what God says in the Bible. God gave us the Bible to help us know who He is! As your knowledge about God grows, so will your understanding of who Jesus is.

That reminds me of our virtue for this month:

Knowledge: Learning something new so you can be better at whatever you do.

(Refer to the main point slide on the screen and have kids say the main point with you. Have them repeat it if necessary.)

Now Motion, it’s time for us to circle around our eGroup leaders to answer a few questions. Do that now.

(give kids time to circle around eGroup leaders)

First question: Why were the Wise Men looking for Jesus? Was this an easy journey? Discuss that now.

(give kids two minutes to answer the question)

Second question: When was the last time you worked hard or had to do something difficult to get what you wanted? Discuss that now.

(give kids two minutes to answer the question)

Now Motion, our final question is our ‘See What God Can Do Through You’ question which is all about how you can use today’s Bible story to show God’s love to the people around you. Today’s question is: When a friend has to do something difficult, how can you use what you know about Jesus to help them? Discuss that question now.”

(give kids two minutes to answer the question)

Worship Intro

“Great job, everybody! I heard some incredible answers coming from your eGroups today.

Now, I want everybody to stand to their feet

(encourage kids to stand)

and help me ring in 2017 by praising God with our first worship songs of the new year. Let’s start by singing ‘Alive.’”

Worship Song – Alive

Worship Song – I Am Yours

Dismissal To eGroups

“Great job, Motion! Everybody stay standing because it’s time for us to head back to our eGroups. When I call your eGroup leaders’ name, you can follow them back.”

(dismiss kids back to eGroups)

VIP Welcome

“Welcome back from your eGroups! Before we continue, I wanted to take a moment and welcome some very special guests who came to visit us for the first time. Motion, help me welcome our VIPs!

(initiate applause)

If it’s your first time here, we consider you a VIP – a very important person! VIPs, turn your attention to the screen because I’ve got some special instructions just for you.

(refer to the screen)

This is a VIP lanyard. If you’re a VIP, you’re wearing this around your neck right now.

[VIP Slide – Lanyard]

When you leave Motion, you need to take that lanyard to the orange tent called the Welcome Area.

[VIP Slide – Welcome Area]

Once you get to the Welcome Area, show them your lanyard and they will give you a gift!

[VIP Slide – Gift]

Let’s review.

VIP Lanyard + Welcome Area = Gift.”

Game Setup – Brain Age

“Now Motion, since we’re in a series called Brain Games, I thought we’d spend this month helping you improve your brain and become little geniuses by the end of the month. In our first game for this month, we need to figure out how smart you all really are and we’ll do that by testing your Brain Age, or how smart you really are. In today’s game, I’m going to give every game group a white board and marker and I’ll ask questions on the screen that your game group will answer.

I’ll put a challenge on the screen and then your game group will have only FIVE seconds to come up with the best answer. When you come up with your answer, you’ll write it on the board and hold it up in the air. If your group has the right answer, you’ll earn a point and we’ll use those points to determine our brain age.

Form a circle with your game group now and once you’ve got your team, we’ll hand out all the supplies you need to determine your Brain Age!”

(allow kids time to play the game using the game slides on the screen)

Motion, I was so impressed wth all of you today! You’re way more advanced than I thought you were, so it looks like I’ll have to have even more difficult puzzles and games ready in the weeks to come!”

Bring It! Challenge Setup

“Let’s take a moment to collect all of the whiteboards and markers from the game groups and pass out any materials needed for our Bring It! Challenge!

(collect all game materials and make sure eGroup leaders have supplies to complete the Bring It! Challenge)

“During this month’s Bring It! Challenge, you’ll need to do the following three things to stretch your brain and receive a prize:

1. Say our memory verse for this series, Psalm 119:105. In fact, let’s say it together right now!

(refer to the verse on the screen and have the kids say it with you)

2. Show Psalm 119:105 in your Bible to your eGroup leader.

3. Say our virtue for this series. In fact, that’s on the screen now, too! Say it with me!

(refer to the virtue slide on the screen)

Ok, so let’s recap. To earn your prize, you’ll need to say this month’s verse, find it in your Bible, and repeat this month’s virtue. Circle around your eGroup leaders and let’s work on that now!”
