KID CONNECT

WHAT IS KID CONNECT?
Kid Connect is all about eGROUP CONNECTIONS: for you to make connections with the kids and for the kids to make connections with each other. Activities are listed in the order they are to be completed. It’s okay if you don’t complete all the activities – some activities will work better for your group than others. Begin Kid Connect when doors open. KID CONNECT ENDS WHEN THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS.

Words in italics, whether on lessons or in handouts, are meant to be said out loud to your group.  Anything not in italics is an instruction that does not necessarily need to be read aloud.

CAMP PACKING LIST
COLORING ACTIVITY

crayons, camp packing list (1 per child), camp packing list cards, camp die

WELCOME children to your group. Let them know how happy you are they are in Quest and how much fun we are going to have today!

SAY: Today we are headed to Camp Wannastay to learn how we can be leaders who set an example for others in everything we say and do! But before we go to camp, we have to PACK our bags!

PLACE crayons in the center of the circle and GIVE each child a camp packing listINSTRUCT children to color the camp packing list

AFTER children have colored the camp packing listGIVE one child the camp dieEXPLAIN children will ROLL the camp die to determine which items to pack for camp. Children will ROLL the camp die and on his or her camp packing list CIRCLE the item rolled. CONTINUE for four rounds.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

  • For younger groups: After children have colored their camp packing list, roll the camp die and the entire group will circle the item rolled.
  • Turn the coloring activity into a game. Have children take turns rolling the camp die to determine which camp item to color. Children will compete to be the first to color all the camp items on their page.

BUG HUNT
GAME ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME

SUPPLIES
camp packing list, bug cards (8), bug net (2), leader cards (16), bug stickers

SAY: There are a few things left on our camp packing list we need to pack. What do we still need to collect? (bugs)

EXPLAIN children are going to CATCH the bugs needed for their camp packing list.

LAY the bug cards face up in the center of the circle and GIVE two children a bug net.

HOLD UP a leader card so the two children can see the bug shown on the leader card. The first child to catch the bug card with their bug net will collect this bug sticker and add it to their camp packing list.

AFTER a child has collected a bug stickerGIVE two different children the bug nets and HOLD UP another leader cardGIVE a bug sticker to the child who swatted the bug card first.

CONTINUE as time allows.

NOTE: Collect the camp packing lists after Bug Hunt. This will cut down on distractions and allow children to focus on the next activity. If children would like take their camp packing list home, pass it out during Dismissal.

KID CONNECT

TO THE CAR
ENERGIZER ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME

SAY: You have collected all the camp items for Camp Wannastay and there’s one thing left to do – load up the car and head to camp!

PLACE the game board and camp cards in the center of the group. GIVE each child a game piece and TELL children to place their game piece on the START space.

EXPLAIN children will work to get their camp bag to the car.

CHOOSE one child to go first. The child will ROLL the die and move the corresponding number of spaces. If the space has the Camp Wannastay logo, the child will CHOOSE a camp card and complete the corresponding action.

CONTINUE until one child is the first to reach the car.

CONGRATULATE the child and PLAY AGAIN as time allows.

GET TO KNOW YOU

INTRODUCE the series using the series overview:

We’ve packed our bags and are on our way to Camp Wannastay! From going on a bear hunt to find our friend Brownie Bear, receiving camp mail from our favorite Quest animals, to meeting around the campfire to hear the BEST stories from God’s word, you’ll WANNASTAY all summer long!

SAY: Today you are part of the [insert animal name] cabin! The first thing you need to do is check-in and get your camp name tag!

SHOW children the name tagsPICK name tag and introduce yourself. WRITE your name on the name tag and SHARE your camp name with the group. SAY: I’m camper [insert camp name] and now I’m checked in at Camp Wannastay. Who’s the next camper to check-in?

CHOOSE one child to pick a name tag . WRITE the child’s name on the name tag and SAY: Welcome to Camp Wannastay. You are camper [READ child’s camp name]. We’re so glad you’re here today! CONTINUE for each child.

AFTER all children are introduced, SAY: We are the (insert group name) cabin today! There are two very special rules to remember so we can have fun at camp. The rules to follow are:

1. Be Safe – How can we be safe? (keeping our hands to ourselves, sitting when others are sitting, walking instead of running, following the rules)

2. Be Kind – How can we be kind? (listening when others are talking, sharing, obeying leaders, sitting on our bottoms so others can see)

SAY: If you can obey our special camp rules and are ready to have fun then put one hand in the center and repeat after me:

WHAT IS BIBLE CONNECT?
Bible Connect is all about BIBLE CONNECTIONS: for kids to make connections with the Bible and learn to love the Bible! Children will make connections to the Bible in two ways: by hearing and talking about the Bible story and practicing the memory verse. Begin Bible Connect after the Get To Know You activity. AFTER BIBLE CONNECT CHILDREN HEAD TO FREE PLAY AND LARGE GROUP.

TELL the children we can find stories about Jesus in God’s book, the Bible!

SHOW and READ the Bible Story using the Bible story cards.

ASK and SAY the following to review the Bible story. Give children a stamp on his or her camp name tag when he or she answers!

1. Where were David’s brothers? (fighting in King Saul’s army)
2. What did David’s dad tell him to take them? (food)
3. When David arrived at the camp, who from the other army was shouting? (Goliath)
4. Goliath was saying mean things about God and the people of Israel. 
5. What did David use to fight Goliath? (rocks and his slingshot)
6. Did David beat Goliath? (yes)

SAY: David became a hero because he was a leader who obeyed his dad. We can be a leader like David when we obey, too! Repeat our main point after me:

HOOT’S HOUSE
BIBLE STORY

PRACTICE the memory verse. Do the motions and say the verse together a few times.

and follow the example (cup hands around mouth while whispering)
of their faith. (shout and pump fist in air)
Hebrews 13:7 (open hands like a book)

SAY: Knowing this verse helps us remember the leaders in our lives and that we can follow their example!

PLAY Hoot’s House. PLACE the birdhouse’s in the center of the circle. EXPLAIN children will close their eyes and Hoot will fly to a birdhouse. While the children’s eyes are closed, PLACE the Hoot card under a birdhouse and ALLOW children to open their eyes. CALL on one child to guess where Hoot is. If the child CHOOSES the birdhouse with Hoot, the child will STAND UP and RECITE the memory verse. If the child does not CHOOSE the birdhouse with Hoot, the entire group will STAND UP and FIND a new seat in the group. ENCOURAGE children to flap their wings and fly to a new seat.

CONTINUE until a child has found Hoot. ALLOW this child to HIDE Hoot in a different birdhouse and PLAY AGAIN.

EXPLAIN to the group children can recite the verse each week and pick a prize from Counselor Poncho at the Camp Wannastay Camp Canteen!

HEAD TO FREE PLAY, THEN LARGE GROUP.
Before heading to Large Group, make sure each child is wearing a camp name tag.

YOU CONNECT

WHAT IS YOU CONNECT?
You Connect is about the eGroup leader (YOU!) helping children make connections with the main point and their lives. You Connect activities reinforce the main point with fun and engaging activities. BEGIN YOU CONNECT AFTER LARGE GROUP.

O-BEE-DIENT
APPLICATION ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
leader card, bee cards (6), bug nut (2)

SAY: If you can be a leader who obeys than make a “bzzzzzzz” sound like a bee! ENCOURAGE children to SAY: Bzzzzzzz. God wants us to be o-BEE-dient and set a good example for others in what we say and do.

EXPLAIN you are going to READ different situations and children are going to CATCH the bees needed to be o-BEE-dient.

LAY the bee cards face up in the center of the circle and GIVE two children a bug net. EXPLAIN you are going to READ different situations and the children with the nets will race to be the first to CATCH the bee needed to be o-BEE-dient in the situation.

LAY the right choice cards out, picture side up in the center of the group. READ the first situation to the eGroup and READ the information on the back of the caught bee card. PLAY until all situations and bee cards have been matched.

SAY: We can be a leader when we are obedient! We can obey our moms, dads, teachers, coaches, grandparents, and eGroup leaders! When we obey, we are an example for others. Let’s say our main point together:

SAY: God wants us to be leaders who obey. Who did David obey? (his dad) That’s right David obeyed his dad and was a leader for others! How did David obey his dad? (took his brothers food)

EXPLAIN children will act out different food items David brought to his brothers.

SHOW the motions to the group:

CALL OUT each item a few times and practice doing the motion. EXPLAIN if you CALL OUT a food David did not bring to his brothers, children will SIT DOWN with their thumbs down.

CALL OUT the items in a random order. ENCOURAGE children to do the motion for each item called. Occasionally call out a food David did not bring to his brothers. ENCOURAGE children to sit down with their thumbs down. (Example: CALL OUT grain, bread, cheese, grain, cheese, pizza.)

The last child to SIT DOWN will SAY the main point:

SAY: Great job! David showed he was a leader by obeying his dad! David brought bread and cheese to his brothers and I have a bread and cheese snack for you! Let’s pray before eating our snack. ENCOURAGE children to BOW their heads, CLOSE their eyes, and REPEAT after you:

Thank You for our snack.
Help us be leaders who obey.
We love You. In Jesus’ name,
amen.

EAT the snack and clean up the eGroup area.

COLLECTIBLE ACTIVITY

PLACE the game board in the center of the circle. SAY: Our time today at Camp Wannastay is almost over and it’s time to get in the car and head home. We better hurry home as fast as we can because Camp Director Cricket sent each of you camp mail! PLACE your Quest animal game piece on the FINISH space on the game boardGIVE one child the die to ROLL and then move the game piece the corresponding number of spaces.

AFTER each roll, ENCOURAGE the group to complete one of the following actions:

CONTINUE until you reach the START space on the game boardSAYWe’ve made it home! Let’s see who our postcard is from! GRAB the camp mailbox and PULL OUT a camp postcardREAD the camp postcard ALOUD, then give each child a camp postcard to take home.

SAY: Each weekend at Camp Wannastay you can collect another postcard from one of our Quest friends and put it in your camp mailbox.

SAY: Each weekend at Camp Wannastay you can collect another postcard from one of our Quest friends. HOLD UP the camp mailbox. EXPLAIN children will receive their own camp mailbox to collect their postcards in. ENCOURAGE children to put the camp mailbox on their refrigerator or kitchen table.

Each child will receive his or her camp mailbox during dismissal.

SAY: Take your camp postcard home and put it in your camp mailbox. Look at your camp postcard everyday to help you remember what we learn in Quest and to spend time with Jesus. Today we learned we can be a leader by following the best leader, Jesus! Let’s say our main point together:
