KID CONNECT

WHAT IS KID CONNECT?
Kid Connect is all about eGROUP CONNECTIONS: for you to make connections with the kids and for the kids to make connections with each other. Activities are listed in the order they are to be completed. It’s okay if you don’t complete all the activities – some activities will work better for your group than others. Begin Kid Connect when doors open. KID CONNECT ENDS WHEN THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS.

Words in italics, whether on lessons or in handouts, are meant to be said out loud to your group.  Anything not in italics is an instruction that does not necessarily need to be read aloud.

CAMP PACKING LIST
COLORING ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME

crayons, camp packing list (1 per child), camp packing list cards, camp die

WELCOME children to your group. Let them know how happy you are they are in Quest and how much fun we are going to have today!

SAY: Today we are headed to Camp Wannastay to learn how we can be leaders who set an example for others in everything we say and do! But before we go to camp, we have to PACK our bags!

PLACE crayons in the center of the circle and GIVE each child a camp packing listINSTRUCT children to color the camp packing list

AFTER children have colored the camp packing listGIVE one child the camp dieEXPLAIN children will ROLL the camp die to determine which items to pack for camp. Children will ROLL the camp die and on his or her camp packing list CIRCLE the item rolled. CONTINUE for four rounds.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

  • For younger groups: After children have colored their camp packing list, roll the camp die and the entire group will circle the item rolled.
  • Turn the coloring activity into a game. Have children take turns rolling the camp die to determine which camp item to color. Children will compete to be the first to color all the camp items on their page.

KID CONNECT

BUG HUNT
GAME ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME

SUPPLIES
camp packing list, bug cards (8), bug net (2), leader cards (16), bug stickers

SAY: There are a few things left on our camp packing list we need to pack. What do we still need to collect? (bugs)

EXPLAIN children are going to CATCH the bugs needed for their camp packing list.

LAY the bug cards face up in the center of the circle and GIVE two children a bug net.

HOLD UP a leader card so the two children can see the bug shown on the leader card. The first child to catch the bug card with their bug net will collect this bug sticker and add it to their camp packing list.

AFTER a child has collected a bug stickerGIVE two different children the bug nets and HOLD UP another leader cardGIVE a bug sticker to the child who swatted the bug card first.

CONTINUE as time allows.

NOTE: Collect the camp packing lists after Bug Hunt. This will cut down on distractions and allow children to focus on the next activity. If children would like take their camp packing list home, pass it out during Dismissal.

KID CONNECT

TO THE CAR

SUGGESTED TIME

SAY: You have collected all the camp items for Camp Wannastay and there’s one thing left to do – load up the car and head to camp!

PLACE the game board and camp cards in the center of the group. GIVE each child a game piece and TELL children to place their game piece on the START space.

EXPLAIN children will work to get their camp bag to the car.

CHOOSE one child to go first. The child will ROLL the die and move the corresponding number of spaces. If the space has the Camp Wannastay logo, the child will CHOOSE a camp card and complete the corresponding action.

CONTINUE until one child is the first to reach the car.

CONGRATULATE the child and PLAY AGAIN as time allows.

CAMP CHECK IN

INTRODUCE the series using the series overview:

We’ve packed our bags and are on our way to Camp Wannastay! From going on a bear hunt to find our friend Brownie Bear, receiving camp mail from our favorite Quest animals, to meeting around the campfire to hear the BEST stories from God’s word, you’ll WANNASTAY all summer long!

SAY: Today you are part of the [insert animal name] cabin! The first thing you need to do is check-in and get your camp name tag!

SHOW children the name tagsPICK name tag and introduce yourself. WRITE your name on the name tag and SHARE your camp name with the group. SAY: I’m camper [insert camp name] and now I’m checked in at Camp Wannastay. Who’s the next camper to check-in?

CHOOSE one child to pick a name tag . WRITE the child’s name on the name tag and SAY: Welcome to Camp Wannastay. You are camper [READ child’s camp name]. We’re so glad you’re here today! CONTINUE for each child.

AFTER all children are introduced, SAY: We are the (insert group name) cabin today! There are two very special rules to remember so we can have fun at camp. The rules to follow are:

1. Be Safe – How can we be safe? (keeping our hands to ourselves, sitting when others are sitting, walking instead of running, following the rules)

2. Be Kind – How can we be kind? (listening when others are talking, sharing, obeying leaders, sitting on our bottoms so others can see)

SAY: If you can obey our special camp rules and are ready to have fun then put one hand in the center and repeat after me:

BIBLE CONNECT

WHAT IS BIBLE CONNECT?
Bible Connect is all about BIBLE CONNECTIONS: for kids to make connections with the Bible and learn to love the Bible! Children will make connections to the Bible in two ways: by hearing and talking about the Bible story and practicing the memory verse. Begin Bible Connect after the Get To Know You activity. AFTER BIBLE CONNECT CHILDREN HEAD TO FREE PLAY AND LARGE GROUP.

TELL the children we can find stories about Jesus in God’s book, the Bible!

SHOW and READ the Bible Story using the Bible story cards.

ASK and SAY the following to review the Bible story. Give children a stamp on his or her camp name tag when he or she answers!

1. God’s family was growing! But who didn’t have enough food to eat? (some women called widows)
2. Were Jesus’ friends able to give the women food? (no)
3. How many leaders did Jesus’ friends choose to help the women? (seven)
4. Did the seven leaders make sure the women had food to eat? (yes)

SAY: Jesus’ friends needed helpers to help the women. They chose seven leaders to help. We can be a leader who helps, just like the leaders in our Bible story. When we help, we set a good example for others in what we say and do. Repeat our main point after me:

BROWNIE BEAR’S BUGS
MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY

PRACTICE the memory verse. Do the motions and say the verse together a few times.

of their faith. (shout and pump fist in air)

SAY: Knowing this verse helps us remember the leaders in our lives and that we can follow their example!

SAY: PLAY Brownie Bear’s Bugs. PLACE the bug cards in the center of the circle. SAY: Brownie Bear has been catching bugs at Camp Wannastay, but some have escaped! EXPLAIN children will close their eyes. While the children’s eyes are closed, CHOOSE one bug card to hide. ALLOW children to open their eyes.

CALL on one child to GUESS which bug has escaped. If the child GUESSES correctly, the child will RECEIVE the bug card. If the child does not GUESS correctly, the child will STAND UP and RECITE the memory verse. CALL on another child to GUESS which bug escaped.

CONTINUE until a child has guessed the missing bug card. PLAY AGAIN as time allows.

GIVE the child who collected the most bug cards a stamp on his or her camp name tag for helping Brownie Bear find her lost bugs!

EXPLAIN to the group children can recite the verse each week and pick a prize from Counselor Poncho at the Camp Wannastay Camp Canteen! GIVE a memory verse sticker to any child who can recite the veRSE

HEAD TO FREE PLAY, THEN LARGE GROUP.
Before heading to Large Group, make sure each child is wearing a camp name tag.

You Connect is about the eGroup leader (YOU!) helping children make connections with the main point and their lives. You Connect activities reinforce the main point with fun and engaging activities. BEGIN YOU CONNECT AFTER LARGE GROUP.

FIND THE FOOD
APPLICATION ACTIVITY

Before the activity, PLACE the camp tablecloth game board on top of the To The Car board.

PLACE the tablecloth game board in the center of the circle and place the food cards facedown on twelve white spaces. SAY: It’s time for a camp picnic, but all the food has gone missing! Let’s be helpers and find the missing food so all the campers can eat a yummy picnic lunch.

CHOOSE one child to turn over a food card and COMPLETE one of the following actions:

Love Week Book Bag, Love Week Book Sticker Sheet, Love Week Bands, Love Week t-shirts (1 per child)

SAY: It’s a very special week at church. Does anyone know what’s special about this week? (It’s Love Week!) That’s right, it’s Love Week! Love Week is a special time every year where our church shows love our communities by serving and helping a lot of people.

EXPLAIN there are lots of ways they can serve and help others this week. One way they can help others is by collecting books for kids.

ASK: What is your favorite book to read? ALLOW children to respond. ASK: Would you be happy or sad if you couldn’t read your favorite book? ENCOURAGE children to make a sad face. SAY: I would be really sad if I didn’t have books to read. But there are some kids who don’t have books to read. One way we can be leaders who help is by collecting books for them during Love Week!

HOLD UP a Love Week Book Bag. SAY: You each will get this Love Week Book Bag when you leave today. Go home and collect as many books as you can. Maybe it’s books you don’t read any more or one of your favorite books you want another kid to read. Put all your books in this bag and bring it back next week!

HOLD UP a Love Week Book Sticker Sheet. SAY: When you find a book to give to another kid, put one of these stickers inside the front cover. This sticker lets others know kids are helping make a difference!

HOLD UP a Love Week Band. SAY: If you bring books back next weekend, you can collect a Love Week Band! Every time you help and serve at a Love Week event you can earn more bands.

SAY: Bringing back books isn’t the only way you can help and serve others; there are lots of ways to help and serve during Love Week and it all starts very soon – in fact, we want you to go out and serve with your family when you leave and get your FIRST Love Week Band!

SAY: But, before you can help and serve others, there’s something you need. You play an important part in Love Week and are leaders who set an example for other adults and kids when you serve. So, our pastor, Pastor Steven, wanted to make sure you had something to represent our church when you’re out there serving. Today you’re all getting your very own Love Week t-shirt as a gift from Pastor Steven! Make sure to wear it whenever you help others and serve this week!

GIVE each child a Love Week Shirt and ENCOURAGE children to WEAR the shirt on top of their clothes. ASSIST children as needed.

ANT ACTIVITY

NOTE: This game can be played as individuals (less than 8 children in an eGroup), in teams (more than 8 children in an eGroup), or as one group (for younger children or if running short on time).

PLACE the tablecloth game board in the center of the group. GIVE each child a game piece and ENCOURAGE children to PLACE their game piece on an “A.”

ASK: Do you see all the ants on our tablecloth? They are marching trying to find our yummy picnic food!

EXPLAIN children will try to avoid the ants and make it across the tablecloth as fast as possible. Any child to make to to the other side of the tablecloth will receive a stamp. CHOOSE one child to go first. Have the child ROLL the die, move the game piece the corresponding number of spaces, and complete an action:

If a child ROLLS a BLUE number, the child will SAY the main point [Leaders (thumbs to chest) help! (hands out, palms up)] and move the game piece forward one space.

If a child ROLLS a RED number, the child will switch spots on the board with another child.

If a child lands on an ant space, the eGroup will YELL: Ant Advance! The child has to MARCH around the circle the number of times rolled and move the game piece back two spaces.

CONTINUE until one child reaches the other side of the tablecloth. This child will HELP give the other children a stamp on their camp name tags.

PLAY AGAIN as time allows.

COLLECTIBLE ACTIVITY

PLACE the game board in the center of the circle. SAY: Our time today at Camp Wannastay is almost over and it’s time to get in the car and head home. We better hurry home as fast as we can because Camp Director Cricket sent each of you camp mail! PLACE your Quest animal game piece on the FINISH space on the game board. GIVE one child the die to ROLL and then move the game piece the corresponding number of spaces.

AFTER each roll, ENCOURAGE the group to complete one of the following actions:

                                                                               CONTINUE until you reach the START space on the game board. SAY: We’ve made it home! Let’s see who our postcard is from! GRAB the camp mailbox and PULL OUT a camp postcard. READ the camp postcard ALOUD, then give each child a camp postcard to take home.

SAY: Each weekend at Camp Wannastay you can collect another postcard from one of our Quest friends. HOLD UP the camp mailbox. EXPLAIN children will receive their own camp mailbox to collect their postcards in. ENCOURAGE children to put the camp mailbox on their refrigerator or kitchen table.

Each child will receive his or her camp mailbox during dismissal.

SAY: Take your camp postcard home and put it in your camp mailbox. Look at your camp postcard everyday to help you remember what we learn in Quest and to spend time with Jesus. Today we learned we can be a leader by following the best leader, Jesus! Let’s say our main point together:
