KID CONNECT

WHAT IS KID CONNECT?
Kid Connect is all about eGROUP CONNECTIONS: for you to make connections with the kids and for the kids to make connections with each other. Activities are listed in the order they are to be completed. It’s okay if you don’t complete all the activities – some activities will work better for your group than others. Begin Kid Connect when doors open. KID CONNECT ENDS WHEN THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS.

Words in italics, whether on lessons or in handouts, are meant to be said out loud to your group.  Anything not in italics is an instruction that does not necessarily need to be read aloud.

QUEST COLORING PAGE
COLORING ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Quest coloring page, crayons, die

PLACE crayons in the center of the circle and GIVE each child a Quest coloring page. INSTRUCT children to color their coloring page. As children color, get to know them by asking questions about their week or what they did that day.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

  • Use a die to determine the crayon color the group will use. Allow children 10-30 seconds to color using this color. Roll the die again and switch crayon colors.
  • Use the number die to determine how many items to color with a certain color crayon. Allow children to color the number of items then roll the die again.
  • Have children take turns rolling the die. Children will compete to be the first to color their coloring page, coloring the number of items rolled each turn.

MY NEIGHBORHOOD
GAME ACTIVITY
SUGGESTED TIME
10-15 MINUTES
SUPPLIES
My Neighborhood game board, Quest animal game pieces, location cards, die

SPREAD the My Neighborhood game board out in the middle of the circle. EXPLAIN each child will try to be the first to get their Quest animal to a specific location on the game board.

ALLOW each child to choose a Quest animal game piece. PLACE the Quest animal on the house on the game board that is the same color as that Quest animal. GIVE each child a location card. TELL children their goal is to get their Quest animal from the house to the location on that card. HELP children find the location on the game board as needed.

ROLL the die. All players will MOVE their game pieces according to the number rolled. USE the instructions below to TELL players how to move. REPEAT until a player arrives at their assigned location.

  • If you roll 1-4: Move the number of spaces rolled.
  • If you roll 5: All players must switch location cards with another player. The new card shows the new location their animal is trying to reach.
  • If you roll 6: All players must switch animals with another player. The pieces themselves do not move, but the children will move a new Quest animal.

The game can be played as individuals, teams of two or three, or as two teams.

MY NEIGHBORHOOD FAVORITES

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
My Neighborhood game board, die, leader card, Quest animal stickers

INTRODUCE the series using the series overview:

God commands us to love one another just as He loves us, and He loves us a lot! God created us to love, too. We can show love to God and our neighbors!

SPREAD the game board in the middle of the circle. ROLL the die and INTRODUCE yourself. READ the question from the leader card that corresponds to the color you rolled and SHARE your answer with the eGroup.

ENCOURAGE each child to ROLL the die, introduce themselves, and ANSWER the corresponding question.

AFTER all children are introduced, PASS out a Quest animal sticker to each child. Have each child place it next to their name tag.

SAY: We are the (insert animal name) today! There are two very special rules to remember so we can have the most fun. The rules to follow are:

  1. Be Safe – How can we be safe? (keeping our hands to ourselves, sitting when others are sitting, walking instead of running, following the rules)
  2. Be Kind – How can we be kind? (listening when others are talking, sharing, obeying leaders, sitting on our bottoms so others can see)

SAY: If you can obey our special rules and are ready to have fun then put one hand in the center and repeat after me:

I am (allow response)
a (insert group name) (allow response)
I will (allow response)
be kind and safe! (allow response)
On the count of three everyone, say ‘Go (insert animal name)!’
1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . .
Go (insert group name)!

BIBLE CONNECT

WHAT IS BIBLE CONNECT?

Bible Connect is all about BIBLE CONNECTIONS: for kids to make connections with the Bible and learn to love the Bible! Children will make connections to the Bible in two ways: by hearing and talking about the Bible story and practicing the memory verse. Begin Bible Connect after the Get To Know You activity. AFTER BIBLE CONNECT CHILDREN HEAD TO FREE PLAY AND LARGE GROUP.

LOVE GOD AND LOVE PEOPLE
BIBLE STORY

SUGGESTED TIME
8 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Bible Story Cards

TELL the children we can find true stories about Jesus in God’s book, the Bible!

SHOW and READ the Bible Story from the Bible story cards.

ASK the following questions to review the Bible story. Each time a child answers a question correctly, ENCOURAGE the group to say, “Great job, neighbor!”.

  1. Who was Jesus talking to? (the Pharisees)
  2. What question did the Pharisees ask Jesus? (which commandment is the most important)
  3. What did Jesus say is the most important commandment? (to love God with all your heart, soul, and mind)
  4. What was the second important commandment? (to love your neighbor as yourself)

SAY: Jesus said if we can love God and our neighbors, we can follow every commandment in the Bible! The more we show love to God and our neighbors, the easier it will be to keep showing love, so we should take time to show love every day! Let’s all say our main point:

I can love God (hug self)
and people (point out)
by showing them! (spread arms wide)

AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD
MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
7 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
My Neighborhood play pieces, memory verse car

SAY: This month we are learning how we can show love to God and to the people in our neighborhood. That means we’re showing love to the people who live around us – the people we see almost every day! Our new Bible verse teaches us how to love God and others. It says:

Love (hug self)
the Lord your God
(point up)
with all your heart.
(place both hands over heart)
Love
(hug self)
your neighbor
(point out)
as yourself.
(thumbs to chest)
Matthew 22:37-39
(open hands like a book)

PRACTICE the memory verse together a few times.

MAKE SURE all children are seated in a circle. PLACE one neighborhood piece on the ground in front of each child. INSTRUCT children not to touch or move the pieces. ASK children to stand and EXPLAIN they will be moving around the circle by stepping forward to the next neighborhood piece each time you clap. Children will CONTINUE moving forward with each clap until you SAY, “Stop, neighbors!

CLAP a slow, steady beat and ENCOURAGE children to move clockwise around the circle, taking one step forward to the next neighborhood piece each time you clap. After clapping a few times, STOP clapping and SAY: Stop, neighbors! CHOOSE children to recite the memory verse based on the following neighbor statements.

SAY: Recite our memory verse if you are a neighbor who is standing behind …

      • a vehicle, like a car or bus.
      • something that grows, like a person or a plant.
      • a sign you might see by the road.
      • something you can see in your neighborhood.

EXPLAIN to the group children can recite the verse each week to earn a memory verse car for their My Neighborhood poster!

HEAD TO FREE PLAY, THEN LARGE GROUP.

APPLICATION ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
mailbox, neighborhood post cards, place cards

SAY: Nobody knows we love them if we just think it! Even telling them we love them isn’t enough. It’s important for us to find ways to SHOW others we love them through our actions!

EXPLAIN children will try to collect two neighborhood post cards from the mailbox. Some of the other cards in the mailbox have pictures of places in the neighborhood with ways they can show love to God and people. The goal is to FIND two neighborhood post cards before the eGroup Leader does!

HAND the mailbox to the child beside you and ASK the child to shake the mailbox really well before PICKING a card. If the card is a place card, READ the instructions on the back. ENCOURAGE children to respond and SET the place card aside. If the card is a neighborhood post card, READ the instructions on the back. ENCOURAGE children to respond then SET the post card in the middle of the circle.

TAKE the mailbox and PICK a card for yourself. READ the instructions and RESPOND. If the card is a neighborhood post card, SET the card in front of you.

HAND the mailbox to another child and REPEAT. CONTINUE until either the eGroup or the eGroup Leader collects a second neighborhood post card.

SAY: Great job, neighbors! It’s important for us to look for ways every day that we can show love to God and to our neighbors. Let’s say our main point together.

I can love God (hug self)
and people (point out)
by showing them! (spread arms wide)

SORRY, NEIGHBOR!
GAME ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
7-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES:
Sorry, Neighbor! cards

SAY: Wiggle your fingers high in the air if you’ve ever played the game “Go Fish.” ENCOURAGE children to wiggle their fingers. SAY: We’re going to play a game that’s a lot like “Go Fish”, but since we can show love to others by using kind words, we’re going to call our game “Sorry, Neighbor!” and practice using kind words with each other!

EXPLAIN each child will get four cards. Their goal is to MAKE as many matches as they can by finding two of the same card. Cards are found by PICKING from the pile in the middle or by COLLECTING cards from a neighbor. If someone asks a child for a card and they don’t have it, the child they asked will SAY “Sorry, neighbor!”

GIVE each child and yourself four Sorry, Neighbor! cards. PLACE the remaining cards in a pile in the middle of the circle. ENCOURAGE children to lay down any matches they already have in their hands.

CHOOSE a child and ASK them, “Hi neighbor, do you have a [insert a card from your hand]?” If the child has the card, they must GIVE it to you. SAY, “Thanks, neighbor!” and LAY DOWN the match in front of you. If the child doesn’t have the card, REMIND the child to SAY, “Sorry, neighbor!” and then DRAW a card from the pile. If the card creates a match, LAY DOWN the match in front of you. If not, KEEP all cards in your hand and TELL the child beside you it is their turn. REPEAT by GOING around the circle and TAKING turns until all matches have been made or until there are no more cards to draw.

NOTE FOR LEADERS: There are four cards for each picture, but children only need two cards to make a match, so there will be two matching sets for each picture. If a child has three of the same card, encourage them to lay down two of the cards as a match and continue looking for the other half of the second match.

SAY: Using kind words is a great way to show love to others, and you all did a wonderful job with your words! Say our main point with me.

I can love God (hug self)
and people (point out)
by showing them! (spread arms wide)

MY NEIGHBORHOOD
COLLECTIBLE ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
My Neighborhood poster, main point cars, glue, sharpie marker

HOLD UP the My Neighborhood poster and SAY: Each weekend you visit Wonder! Clubhouse you can collect main point cars to add to your poster. These cars will help remind us to show love to God and others! Collect six cars and bring your poster back to Quest to receive a special prize!

To receive today’s main point car, children will have to Remember, Think, and Follow! SAY: Let’s REMEMBER … what are the two most important commandments? (1. Love God. 2. Love people.) Let’s THINK … When I love people, who else am I showing love to? (God) When we show love to God and to other people, we can obey all of God’s commandments, so it’s important for us to remember to show love every day! If you can FOLLOW the example set in our Bible story, let’s say our main point together:

I can love God (hug self)
and people (point out)
by showing them! (spread arms wide)

GIVE each child a My Neighborhood car.

SAY: Take your car home and glue it to your My Neighborhood poster. Make sure to look at your poster every day to remember what we learn in Quest and to spend time with Jesus. Today we learned how we can show love to God and to our neighbors! Let’s say our main point together:

I can love God (hug self)
and people (point out)
by showing them! (spread arms wide)

VIPs AND CHILDREN WHO HAVE NOT RECEIVED A MY NEIGHBORHOOD POSTER: GIVE the child a My Neighborhood poster and GLUE the main point car on their poster. WRITE the child’s name on the front of the My Neighborhood poster with the Sharpie marker.
