KID CONNECT

WHAT IS KID CONNECT?
Kid Connect is all about eGROUP CONNECTIONS: for you to make connections with the kids and for the kids to make connections with each other. Activities are listed in the order they are to be completed. It’s okay if you don’t complete all the activities – some activities will work better for your group than others. Begin Kid Connect when doors open. KID CONNECT ENDS WHEN THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS.

Words in italics, whether on lessons or in handouts, are meant to be said out loud to your group.  Anything not in italics is an instruction that does not necessarily need to be read aloud.

QUEST COLORING PAGE
COLORING ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Quest coloring page, crayons, die

PLACE crayons in the center of the circle and GIVE each child a Quest coloring page. INSTRUCT children to color their coloring page. As children color, get to know them by asking questions about their week or what they did that day.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

  • Use a die to determine the crayon color the group will use. Allow children 10-30 seconds to color using this color. Roll the die again and switch crayon colors.
  • Use the number die to determine how many items to color with a certain color crayon. Allow children to color the number of items then roll the die again.
  • Have children take turns rolling the die. Children will compete to be the first to color their coloring page, coloring the number of items rolled each turn.

MY NEIGHBORHOOD
GAME ACTIVITY
SUGGESTED TIME
10-15 MINUTES
SUPPLIES
My Neighborhood game board, Quest animal game pieces, location cards, die

SPREAD the My Neighborhood game board out in the middle of the circle. EXPLAIN each child will try to be the first to get their Quest animal to a specific location on the game board.

ALLOW each child to choose a Quest animal game piece. PLACE the Quest animal on the house on the game board that is the same color as that Quest animal. GIVE each child a location card. TELL children their goal is to get their Quest animal from the house to the location on that card. HELP children find the location on the game board as needed.

ROLL the die. All players will MOVE their game pieces according to the number rolled. USE the instructions below to TELL players how to move. REPEAT until a player arrives at their assigned location.

  • If you roll 1-4: Move the number of spaces rolled.
  • If you roll 5: All players must switch location cards with another player. The new card shows the new location their animal is trying to reach.
  • If you roll 6: All players must switch animals with another player. The pieces themselves do not move, but the children will move a new Quest animal.

The game can be played as individuals, teams of two or three, or as two teams.

MY NEIGHBORHOOD FAVORITES

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
My Neighborhood game board, die, leader card, Quest animal stickers

INTRODUCE the series using the series overview:

God commands us to love one another just as He loves us, and He loves us a lot! God created us to love, too. We can show love to God and our neighbors!

SPREAD the game board in the middle of the circle. ROLL the die and INTRODUCE yourself. READ the question from the leader card that corresponds to the color you rolled and SHARE your answer with the eGroup.

ENCOURAGE each child to ROLL the die, introduce themselves, and ANSWER the corresponding question.

AFTER all children are introduced, PASS out a Quest animal sticker to each child. Have each child place it next to their name tag.

SAY: We are the (insert animal name) today! There are two very special rules to remember so we can have the most fun. The rules to follow are:

  1. Be Safe – How can we be safe? (keeping our hands to ourselves, sitting when others are sitting, walking instead of running, following the rules)
  2. Be Kind – How can we be kind? (listening when others are talking, sharing, obeying leaders, sitting on our bottoms so others can see)

SAY: If you can obey our special rules and are ready to have fun then put one hand in the center and repeat after me:

I am (allow response)
a (insert group name) (allow response)
I will (allow response)
be kind and safe! (allow response)
On the count of three everyone, say ‘Go (insert animal name)!’
1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . .
Go (insert group name)!

BIBLE CONNECT

WHAT IS BIBLE CONNECT?

Bible Connect is all about BIBLE CONNECTIONS: for kids to make connections with the Bible and learn to love the Bible! Children will make connections to the Bible in two ways: by hearing and talking about the Bible story and practicing the memory verse. Begin Bible Connect after the Get To Know You activity. AFTER BIBLE CONNECT CHILDREN HEAD TO FREE PLAY AND LARGE GROUP.

THE EARLY CHURCH
BIBLE STORY

SUGGESTED TIME
8 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
The Beginner’s Bible

TELL the children we can find true stories about Jesus in God’s book, the Bible!

SHOW and READ the Bible Story on page 480-483 from The Beginner’s Bible.

ASK the following questions to review the Bible story. Each time a child answers a question correctly, ENCOURAGE the group to say, “Great job, neighbor!”

  1. Who was teaching the new believers about God? (the disciples)
  2. What are some of the things the new believers did together? (They prayed, sang songs, ate meals together, and celebrated the Lord’s Supper.)
  3. Did the new believers share with each other or keep things to themselves? (They shared.)
  4. Did the church grow or stay the same size? (It grew.)

SAY: The new believers did so many things together! When we show love to God and to our neighbors, we don’t have to do it by ourselves. We can work together with our friends to show love to God and to everyone in our neighborhood! Say our main point with me.

I can love God (hug self)
and people (point out)
with my friends! (high five a friend)

AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD
MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
7 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
My Neighborhood play pieces, memory verse car

SAY: This month we are learning how we can show love to God and to the people in our neighborhood. That means we’re showing love to the people who live around us – the people we see almost every day! Our new Bible verse teaches us how to love God and others. It says:

Love (hug self)
the Lord your God
(point up)
with all your heart.
(place both hands over heart)
Love
(hug self)
your neighbor
(point out)
as yourself.
(thumbs to chest)
Matthew 22:37-39
(open hands like a book)

PRACTICE the memory verse together a few times.

MAKE SURE all children are seated in a circle. PLACE one neighborhood piece on the ground in front of each child. INSTRUCT children not to touch or move the pieces. ASK children to stand and EXPLAIN they will be moving around the circle by stepping forward to the next neighborhood piece each time you clap. Children will CONTINUE moving forward with each clap until you SAY, “Stop, neighbors!

CLAP a slow, steady beat and ENCOURAGE children to move clockwise around the circle, taking one step forward to the next neighborhood piece each time you clap. After clapping a few times, STOP clapping and SAY: Stop, neighbors! CHOOSE children to recite the memory verse based on the following neighbor statements.

SAY: Recite our memory verse if you are a neighbor who is standing behind …

  • a vehicle, like a car or bus.
  • something that grows, like a person or a plant.
  • a sign you might see by the road.
  • something you can see in your neighborhood.

EXPLAIN to the group children can recite the verse each week to earn a memory verse car for their My Neighborhood poster!

HEAD TO FREE PLAY, THEN LARGE GROUP.

WHAT IS YOU CONNECT?
You Connect is about the eGroup leader (YOU!) helping children make connections with the main point and their lives. You Connect activities reinforce the main point with fun and engaging activities. BEGIN YOU CONNECT AFTER LARGE GROUP.

LOVE IN ACTION
APPLICATION ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
action cards, situation cards

SAY: The first church taught us four ways we can show love to God and other people with our friends: eating together, singing together, praying together, and sharing with each other. As they did all these things together, their hearts were happy because they were showing love to each other, too! When we get together with our friends to eat, sing, pray, and share with our neighbors, we are showing love to God and other people, just like the first church.

SPREAD OUT the four action cards in the middle of the eGroup. EXPLAIN kids will act out these four movements as they decide how a child is showing love.

HOLD UP each action card one at a time and PRACTICE each movement with the children as you READ the instructions on the back, then PLACE the action card back on the floor with the picture facing up. LEAVE the action cards where all children can see them to help them remember the four actions.

READ the situation from one of the situation cards. Be careful not to SHOW the picture on the back! ENCOURAGE children to perform one of the four actions on the action cards to represent which way that child is showing love. TURN OVER the situation card to show children if they chose the correct way to show love. REPEAT with the remaining situation cards.

SAY: The early church created a community where they showed love by doing things together. When we spend time eating, singing, praying, and sharing with our friends, we are showing them love and helping make our neighborhood a better place! Let’s all say our main point together.

I can love God (hug self)
and people (point out)
with my friends! (high five a friend)

NEIGHBORHOOD ADVENTURE WALK
GAME ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
7-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES:
mailbox, story cards

NOTE: Before the activity begins, PUT the “Before” cards in one mailbox and the “After” cards in the other mailbox.

SAY: We’re going to create a story together about a time a friend and I took an adventure walk through our neighborhood! I need your help to put the story together and act it out as I tell it.

EXPLAIN you will give the mailbox to the child beside you. The child will DRAW a story card from the mailbox to help create the story. Each story card will have an action for children to PERFORM as you tell the story. After completing the action, the child will PASS the mailbox to the next child and that child will DRAW the next story card.

SAY: One sunny afternoon, my friend and I decided to take a walk through our neighborhood together. But as we walked out of my driveway, a bird swooped down and swiped my friend’s hat right off his head! Of course we knew we had to get his hat back, so we pretended to fly like birds as we took off after the bird. Everyone stand up and pretend to fly like a bird with me. ENCOURAGE children to stand up and pretend to fly like birds.

HAND the mailbox to the child next to you so the child can choose a story card. READ the story card aloud and ENCOURAGE children to ACT OUT the story as directed. CONTINUE passing the mailbox and reading story cards until the last story card has been read, then READ the story ending: At that moment, we spotted the bird flying back in the direction of my house. We ran back as fast as we could. Everyone run in place as fast as you can! ENCOURAGE children to run in place. We arrived home just in time to see the bird drop my friend’s hat right in my driveway and we snatched it up as fast as we could! Whew! What an adventure! The end!

SAY: You all did a great job helping me create and act out that story! Playing games and telling stories together are also fun ways to spend time with friends in our neighborhood and show them we love them! Let’s remember our main point together:

I can love God (hug self)
and people (point out)
with my friends! (high five a friend)

MY NEIGHBORHOOD
COLLECTIBLE ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
My Neighborhood poster, main point cars, glue, sharpie marker

HOLD UP the My Neighborhood poster and SAY: Each weekend you visit Wonder! Clubhouse you can collect main point cars to add to your poster. These cars will help remind us to show love to God and others! Collect six cars and bring your poster back to Quest to receive a special prize!

To receive today’s main point car, children will have to Remember, Think, and Follow! SAY: Let’s REMEMBER … The first church wasn’t a building. What was it? (a group of people) Let’s THINK … what are some of the things the new church did together? (prayed, learned about God, shared with each other) The new believers showed love to God and to each other by sharing and spending quality time with each other. They were happy in their community because they showed love to God and other people together! If you can FOLLOW the example set in our Bible story, let’s say our main point together:

I can love God (hug self)
and people (point out)
with my friends! (high five a friend)

GIVE each child a My Neighborhood car.

SAY: Take your car home and glue it to your My Neighborhood poster. Make sure to look at your poster every day to remember what we learn in Quest and to spend time with Jesus. Today we learned how we can show love to God and to our neighbors! Let’s say our main point together:

I can love God (hug self)
and people (point out)
with my friends! (high five a friend)

VIPs AND CHILDREN WHO HAVE NOT RECEIVED A MY NEIGHBORHOOD POSTER: GIVE the child a My Neighborhood poster and GLUE the main point car on their poster. WRITE the child’s name on the front of the My Neighborhood poster with the Sharpie marker.
