KID CONNECT

WHAT IS KID CONNECT?
Kid Connect is all about eGROUP CONNECTIONS: for you to make connections with the kids and for the kids to make connections with each other. Activities are listed in the order they are to be completed. It’s okay if you don’t complete all the activities – some activities will work better for your group than others. Begin Kid Connect when doors open. KID CONNECT ENDS WHEN THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS.

Words in italics, whether on lessons or in handouts, are meant to be said out loud to your group.  Anything not in italics is an instruction that does not necessarily need to be read aloud.

QUEST COLORING PAGE
COLORING ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Quest coloring page, crayons, die

PLACE crayons in the center of the circle and GIVE each child a coloring page. Be sure to give out the engine coloring page and the caboose coloring page first, then give out the remaining train car coloring pages.

INSTRUCT children to color their coloring page. As children color, get to know them by asking questions about their week or what they did that day.

Once most children have completed their coloring page, ENCOURAGE children to line up their coloring pages to form a train. The engine coloring page should go at the front of the train and the caboose coloring page should go at the other end. All other train car coloring pages will be in the middle.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

  • Have each child sit behind their picture. Stand at the engine and ask the child behind that picture to tell what animal is in their train car. Encourage the whole eGroup to make the noise that animal would make. Repeat for each animal in the train as you work your way to the caboose.
  • Encourage children to put the animals in order from smallest to largest between the engine and the caboose.
  • For older children: Encourage children to put the animals in alphabetical order between the engine and the caboose.

TRAIN RACE
GAME ACTIVITY
SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES
SUPPLIES
Game board, train pieces, die
GIVE each child a game board and ALLOW each child to CHOOSE a train piece.

EXPLAIN children have different game boards, but they all have the same goal – to get their train to Creation Station!

ASK each child to place their train piece on their Quest Train Station. ROLL the die. INSTRUCT all children to move their train pieces on their game boards according to the chart.

Once all children have moved, SAY:

  • If you are on a GREEN space, move forward one space.
  • If you are on a YELLOW space, move backward one space.
  • If you are on a RED space, you will lose one turn while your train rests at the train stop.

CONTINUE until a child reaches Creation Station on their game board.

KID CONNECT

CONDUCTOR SAYS
GAME ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Conductor Says cards (10), die

EXPLAIN children will be playing a game like “Simon Says”. The Conductor (eGroup Leader) will choose actions for the group to perform. The other children should only complete an action if the Conductor says, “Conductor says …” before the action. If children complete the action when the Conductor did not say “Conductor says …” they have to sit out for one turn at the train stop (in the middle of the rug) for one round.

ENCOURAGE children to stand up and create a wide circle around the rug. CHOOSE a card and roll the die. INSERT the action from the card and the number from the die into the following statement: CONDUCTOR SAYS [action] [number] times! ENCOURAGE the group to complete the action.

REPEAT. Every two or three cards, READ the action statement without saying “Conductor Says.” Any children who complete the action will rest at the “train stop”for one round.

GET TO KNOW YOU

ONCE THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS
(5:00, 9:30, 11:30)

IF YOU WERE THE CONDUCTOR

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Die, leader card, Quest animal sticker

INTRODUCE the series using the series overview:

At Creation Station, we’ll make discoveries and learn about the world around us and that God made everything – the sun, moon, stars, planets, clouds, rain, oceans, animals, flowers, you, me … everything!

ROLL the die and INTRODUCE yourself. READ the question from the leader card that corresponds to the color you rolled and SHARE your answer with the eGroup.

ENCOURAGE each child to ROLL the die, introduce themselves, and ANSWER the corresponding question.

AFTER all children are introduced, PASS out a Quest animal sticker to each child. Have each child place it next to their name tag.

SAY: We are the (insert animal name) today! There are two very special rules to remember so we can have the most fun. The rules to follow are:

  1. Be Safe – How can we be safe? (keeping our hands to ourselves, sitting when others are sitting, walking instead of running, following the rules)
  2. Be Kind – How can we be kind? (listening when others are talking, sharing, obeying leaders, sitting on our bottoms so others can see)

SAY: If you can obey our special rules and are ready to have fun then put one hand in the center and repeat after me:

I am (allow response)
a (insert group name) (allow response)
I will (allow response)
be kind and safe! (allow response)
On the count of three everyone, say ‘Go (insert animal name)!’
1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . .
Go (insert group name)!

BIBLE CONNECT

WHAT IS BIBLE CONNECT?

Bible Connect is all about BIBLE CONNECTIONS: for kids to make connections with the Bible and learn to love the Bible! Children will make connections to the Bible in two ways: by hearing and talking about the Bible story and practicing the memory verse. Begin Bible Connect after the Get To Know You activity. AFTER BIBLE CONNECT CHILDREN HEAD TO FREE PLAY AND LARGE GROUP.

CREATION DAY 5: FISH AND BIRDS
BIBLE STORY

SUGGESTED TIME
8 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
The Beginner’s Bible, train stickers

TELL the children we can find true stories in God’s book, the Bible!

SAY: We’re going to read the whole story of how God created the world. Today, we’re going to learn about day five of creation. Everybody hold up five fingers! LEAD children in holding up five fingers. Be sure to listen extra carefully when I read about the fifth day!

SHOW and READ the Bible Story on pages 7-13 from The Beginner’s Bible.

ASK the following questions to review the Bible story. Each time a child answers a question correctly, GIVE the child a train sticker.

  1. On day five, what did God create? (fish and birds)
  2. Which did He put in the ocean, the fish or the birds? (the fish)
  3. Did God create other ocean animals too? (yes)
  4. What are some other ocean animals God created? (whales, crabs, octopus, jellyfish)
  5. Which did He create to fly in the sky, the fish or the birds? (the birds)
  6. Did God create just one kind of birds, or lots of different kinds? (lots of different kinds)

SAY: God is so big and so powerful! On day five of creation, He created fish and other water creatures to swim in the sea, and He created all of the beautiful birds to fly in the air. Repeat our main point after me:

God made (point up)
fish (put hands together and move forward)
and birds! (flap arms)

FREEZE!
MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
7 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
playlist (download on your electronic device), memory verse train

SAY: In this series, we are learning how God created everything in the whole world. Our Bible verse says:

You (point up)
made (fist on top of fist)
the world (form a circle with arms over head)
and everything in it. (spread arms wide)
Psalm 89:11 (NCV) (open hands like a book)

PRACTICE the memory verse together a few times.

EXPLAIN when you PLAY music, the children should dance around the eGroup area. When the music STOPS, everyone will FREEZE in one of two poses. Children will be chosen to say the verse based on their pose.

SAY: Today we are learning how God created fish and birds. When the music stops, you get to freeze as a fish or a bird. If you choose to be a fish, lie down on your belly and move your arms and legs like you’re swimming. Everybody try that with me now. ALLOW children to try the “fish” pose. If you choose to be a bird, jump in the air and flap your arms. ALLOW children to try the “bird” pose.

PLAY the Freeze! playlist from your electronic device. This is the ONLY approved playlist – please do not play any personal music. ENCOURAGE children to dance. After 10-15 seconds, STOP the music and SAY: FREEZE! REMIND children to strike a pose representing either a fish or a bird. ASK all children who chose the bird to sit quietly while the children who chose fish say the verse together. REPEAT the activity several times, alternating which group (fish or birds) says the verse each time.

EXPLAIN to the group children can recite the verse each week to earn a memory verse train car for their All Aboard poster! ALLOW children an opportunity to RECITE the verse by themselves. GIVE any child who recites the verse by themselves a memory verse train car. MARK the “MV” box by that child’s name on your check-in sheet.

HEAD TO FREE PLAY, THEN LARGE GROUP.

YOU CONNECT

WHAT IS YOU CONNECT?
You Connect is about the eGroup leader (YOU!) helping children make connections with the main point and their lives. You Connect activities reinforce the main point with fun and engaging activities. BEGIN YOU CONNECT AFTER LARGE GROUP.

WHERE DO THEY GO?
APPLICATION ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Day 5 cards, water picture, sky picture, leader sheet

SAY: On the fifth day of creation, God created all different kinds of fish and birds. And God had already created a special place for each of them to go! On the second day of creation, what place did God create for the fish to swim in? PAUSE for children to respond. (the water) What place did God create for the birds to fly in? PAUSE for children to respond. (the sky) God had already created special places for the fish and birds before they even existed! Let’s work together to put some of the fish and birds on the special places God made for them.

SPREAD OUT the Day 5 cards face up in the center of the eGroup circle. PLACE the water picture at one end and the sky picture at the other. EXPLAIN children will listen to clues to figure out which fish or bird is being described. Once a child guesses the correct fish or bird, the child will PLACE the creature where it belongs in either the water or the sky.

READ the clues on the leader sheet for the first creature. PAUSE after each clue to allow children to guess. Once a child correctly guesses the creature described, TELL the child to PICK UP the card and place it on the water picture or the sky picture. REPEAT until all cards have been guessed and placed on the right picture.

SAY: God created so many cool fish and birds for us to enjoy! Let’s say our main point together:

God made (point up)
fish (put hands together and move forward)
and birds! (flap arms)

FISH, FISH, BIRD
GAME ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
7-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES:
no supplies

SAY: Flap your arms like a duck if you’ve ever played “Duck, Duck, Goose!” ENCOURAGE children to flap their arms. We’re going to play a game just like that today, except it’s called “Fish, Fish, Bird.” It will help us remember that God created the fish and birds on day five!

MAKE SURE children are seated in a circle with plenty of space in the middle. CHOOSE one child to walk around the circle and tap other children’s heads, saying, “Fish… fish… fish…” as each head is tapped. The child will TAP one child’s head and call out, “BIRD,” then begin to RUN around the circle and try to SIT in that child’s spot. The child chosen as the bird should RUN after the other child and try to CATCH them. If the “bird” catches the other child before they sit, the other child should sit in the “fish pond” (in the middle of the circle). They will stay in the fish pond until another child is caught and takes their place.

The child who was chosen as the “bird” will now be the one to TAP the children’s heads and say, “Fish, Fish, Bird!” ENCOURAGE children to choose a “bird” who has not been chosen before. REPEAT until all children have had a turn to be the “bird.”

SAY: You all did a great job playing “Fish, Fish, Bird!” Say our main point with me:

God made (point up)
fish (put hands together and move forward)
and birds! (flap arms)

To receive today’s main point train car, children will have to Remember, Think, and Follow! SAY: Let’s REMEMBER … What did God create in today’s Bible story? (fish and birds) Let’s THINK … Did God create the fish and birds on day three or day five? (day five) God created the fish, birds, and so many other amazing things! Because God made everything, we should thank Him for what He’s created! What will you thank God for today that He created on day five? (fish and birds) Let’s say our main point together:
