KID CONNECT

WHAT IS KID CONNECT?
Kid Connect is all about eGROUP CONNECTIONS: for you to make connections with the kids and for the kids to make connections with each other. Activities are listed in the order they are to be completed. It’s okay if you don’t complete all the activities – some activities will work better for your group than others. Begin Kid Connect when doors open. KID CONNECT ENDS WHEN THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS.

Words in italics, whether on lessons or in handouts, are meant to be said out loud to your group.  Anything not in italics is an instruction that does not necessarily need to be read aloud.

QUEST COLORING PAGE
COLORING ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Quest coloring page, crayons, die

PLACE crayons in the center of the circle and GIVE each child a coloring page. Be sure to give out the engine coloring page and the caboose coloring page first, then give out the remaining train car coloring pages.

INSTRUCT children to color their coloring page. As children color, get to know them by asking questions about their week or what they did that day.

Once most children have completed their coloring page, ENCOURAGE children to line up their coloring pages to form a train. The engine coloring page should go at the front of the train and the caboose coloring page should go at the other end. All other train car coloring pages will be in the middle.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

  • Have each child sit behind their picture. Stand at the engine and ask the child behind that picture to tell what animal is in their train car. Encourage the whole eGroup to make the noise that animal would make. Repeat for each animal in the train as you work your way to the caboose.
  • Encourage children to put the animals in order from smallest to largest between the engine and the caboose.
  • For older children: Encourage children to put the animals in alphabetical order between the engine and the caboose.

TRAIN RACE
GAME ACTIVITY
SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES
SUPPLIES
Game board, train pieces, die
GIVE each child a game board and ALLOW each child to CHOOSE a train piece.

EXPLAIN children have different game boards, but they all have the same goal – to get their train to Creation Station!

ASK each child to place their train piece on their Quest Train Station. ROLL the die. INSTRUCT all children to move their train pieces on their game boards according to the chart.

Once all children have moved, SAY:

  • If you are on a GREEN space, move forward one space.
  • If you are on a YELLOW space, move backward one space.
  • If you are on a RED space, you will lose one turn while your train rests at the train stop.

CONTINUE until a child reaches Creation Station on their game board.

KID CONNECT

CONDUCTOR SAYS
GAME ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Conductor Says cards (10), die

EXPLAIN children will be playing a game like “Simon Says”. The Conductor (eGroup Leader) will choose actions for the group to perform. The other children should only complete an action if the Conductor says, “Conductor says …” before the action. If children complete the action when the Conductor did not say “Conductor says …” they have to sit out for one turn at the train stop (in the middle of the rug) for one round.

ENCOURAGE children to stand up and create a wide circle around the rug. CHOOSE a card and roll the die. INSERT the action from the card and the number from the die into the following statement: CONDUCTOR SAYS [action] [number] times! ENCOURAGE the group to complete the action.

REPEAT. Every two or three cards, READ the action statement without saying “Conductor Says.” Any children who complete the action will rest at the “train stop”for one round.

GET TO KNOW YOU

ONCE THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS
(5:00, 9:30, 11:30)

IF YOU WERE THE CONDUCTOR

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Die, leader card, Quest animal sticker

INTRODUCE the series using the series overview:

At Creation Station, we’ll make discoveries and learn about the world around us and that God made everything – the sun, moon, stars, planets, clouds, rain, oceans, animals, flowers, you, me … everything!

ROLL the die and INTRODUCE yourself. READ the question from the leader card that corresponds to the color you rolled and SHARE your answer with the eGroup.

ENCOURAGE each child to ROLL the die, introduce themselves, and ANSWER the corresponding question.

AFTER all children are introduced, PASS out a Quest animal sticker to each child. Have each child place it next to their name tag.

SAY: We are the (insert animal name) today! There are two very special rules to remember so we can have the most fun. The rules to follow are:

  1. Be Safe – How can we be safe? (keeping our hands to ourselves, sitting when others are sitting, walking instead of running, following the rules)
  2. Be Kind – How can we be kind? (listening when others are talking, sharing, obeying leaders, sitting on our bottoms so others can see)

SAY: If you can obey our special rules and are ready to have fun then put one hand in the center and repeat after me:

I am (allow response)
a (insert group name) (allow response)
I will (allow response)
be kind and safe! (allow response)
On the count of three everyone, say ‘Go (insert animal name)!’
1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . .
Go (insert group name)!

BIBLE CONNECT

WHAT IS BIBLE CONNECT?

Bible Connect is all about BIBLE CONNECTIONS: for kids to make connections with the Bible and learn to love the Bible! Children will make connections to the Bible in two ways: by hearing and talking about the Bible story and practicing the memory verse. Begin Bible Connect after the Get To Know You activity. AFTER BIBLE CONNECT CHILDREN HEAD TO FREE PLAY AND LARGE GROUP.

CREATION DAY 6: Animals
BIBLE STORY

SUGGESTED TIME
8 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
The Beginner’s Bible, train stickers

TELL the children we can find true stories in God’s book, the Bible!

SAY: We’re going to read the whole story of how God created the world. Today, we’re going to learn about the first part of day six of creation. Everybody hold up six fingers! LEAD children in holding up six fingers. Be sure to listen extra carefully when I read about the sixth day!

SHOW and READ the Bible Story on pages 7-13 from The Beginner’s Bible.

ASK the following questions to review the Bible story. Each time a child answers a question correctly, GIVE the child a train sticker.

  1. On day six, God created people and what else? (animals)
  2. Did God create just one kind of animals or lots of different animals? (lots of different animals)
  3. The Bible says He made animals to “creep” and “crawl.” What are some animals that creep or crawl? (bugs, snakes, lizards, turtles)
  4. The Bible also says He made animals that “hop” and “gallop.” What are some animals that hop or gallop? (bunnies, kangaroos, horses, zebras)

SAY: God is so big and so powerful! On day six of creation, He created so many different kinds of animals that live and move on land. Repeat our main point after me:

God made (point up)
animals! (make claws in front of self)

FREEZE!
MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
7 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
playlist (download on your electronic device), memory verse train

SAY: This month we are learning how God created everything in the whole world. Our Bible verse says:

You (point up)
made (fist on top of fist)
the world (form a circle with arms over head)
and everything in it. (spread arms wide)
Psalm 89:11 (NCV) (open hands like a book)

PRACTICE the memory verse together a few times.

EXPLAIN when you PLAY music, the children should dance around the eGroup area. When the music STOPS, everyone will FREEZE in one of two poses. Children will be chosen to say the verse based on their pose.

SAY: Today we are learning how God created animals. When the music stops, you get to freeze as animals that crawl or hop. If you choose to be a crawling animal, kneel down on the floor and crawl around. Everybody try that with me now. ALLOW children to try the “crawling animal” pose. If you choose to be a hopping animal, hop in place. ALLOW children to try the “hopping animal” pose.

PLAY the Freeze! playlist from your electronic device. This is the ONLY approved playlist – please do not play any personal music. ENCOURAGE children to dance. After 10-15 seconds, STOP the music and SAY: FREEZE! REMIND children to strike a pose representing either crawling or hopping animals. ASK all children who chose the hopping animal to sit quietly while the children who chose the crawling animal say the verse together. REPEAT the activity several times, alternating which group (hopping or crawling animals) says the verse each time.

EXPLAIN to the group children can recite the verse each week to earn a memory verse train car for their All Aboard poster! ALLOW children an opportunity to RECITE the verse by themselves. GIVE any child who recites the verse by themselves a memory verse train car. MARK the “MV” box by that child’s name on your check-in sheet.

HEAD TO FREE PLAY, THEN LARGE GROUP.

YOU CONNECT

WHAT IS YOU CONNECT?
You Connect is about the eGroup leader (YOU!) helping children make connections with the main point and their lives. You Connect activities reinforce the main point with fun and engaging activities. BEGIN YOU CONNECT AFTER LARGE GROUP.

GOD’S ANIMALS
APPLICATION ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Day 6 cards (12)

SAY: On the sixth day of creation, God made so many different animals. They look different, they sound different, and they move in different ways, but they all have one thing in common: they are animals that live and move around on land.

EXPLAIN children will be watching for pictures of animals God created on the sixth day of creation. If they see an animal, children will ACT like the animal by moving or making sounds like the animal. If the picture does not show an animal God created, children should STAND as still as they can and PUT a finger over their mouths.

SHOW children the first Day 6 card. ENCOURAGE children to ACT like the animal if it’s an animal God created or STAND very still and quiet with a finger over their mouth if it’s not an animal God created.

SAY: God created so many animals that look and act so differently, and each animal has a special purpose. Let’s say our main point together:

God made (point up)
animals! (make claws in front of self)

PUT EM’ TOGETHER
GAME ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
7-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES:
animal piece cards

SAY: God made lots of different kinds of animals that make so many different sounds. Let’s put some animals together and listen for all of the different sounds these animals make!

SPREAD the animal piece cards around the middle of the circle. EXPLAIN children will TAKE TURNS putting animals together by finding all the different parts of the same animal and arranging them to form one whole animal. Once they have put the animal together, children will MAKE the sound that animal makes.

CHOOSE four random animal piece cards and put them together on the floor. SAY: Does this make a real animal, or is this a silly mixed-up animal? (a silly mixed-up animal) CHOOSE a child to take one of the animal piece cards from your mixed-up animal. ASK the child to FIND the other three animal piece cards for that animal and PUT them together to form a complete picture. ENCOURAGE the group to SHARE what animal it is and together MAKE the sound that animal makes. REPEAT until all animals have been put together.

SAY: It’s incredible how different all of the animals God created are! They look different and sound different because God made each one in a special way! Say our main point with me:

God made (point up)
animals! (make claws in front of self)

Modification for 3s: CHOOSE an animal piece card from and then have children WORK as a group to find the other three pieces. PUT them together yourself, then ENCOURAGE the group to SHARE what animal it is and MAKE the sound that animal makes together.
