KID CONNECT

WHAT IS KID CONNECT?
Kid Connect is all about eGROUP CONNECTIONS: for you to make connections with the kids and for the kids to make connections with each other. Activities are listed in the order they are to be completed. It’s okay if you don’t complete all the activities – some activities will work better for your group than others. Begin Kid Connect when doors open. KID CONNECT ENDS WHEN THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS.

Words in italics, whether on lessons or in handouts, are meant to be said out loud to your group.  Anything not in italics is an instruction that does not necessarily need to be read aloud.

QUEST COLORING PAGE
COLORING ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Quest coloring page, crayons, die

PLACE crayons in the center of the circle and GIVE each child a coloring page. Be sure to give out the engine coloring page and the caboose coloring page first, then give out the remaining train car coloring pages.

INSTRUCT children to color their coloring page. As children color, get to know them by asking questions about their week or what they did that day.

Once most children have completed their coloring page, ENCOURAGE children to line up their coloring pages to form a train. The engine coloring page should go at the front of the train and the caboose coloring page should go at the other end. All other train car coloring pages will be in the middle.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

  • Have each child sit behind their picture. Stand at the engine and ask the child behind that picture to tell what animal is in their train car. Encourage the whole eGroup to make the noise that animal would make. Repeat for each animal in the train as you work your way to the caboose.
  • Encourage children to put the animals in order from smallest to largest between the engine and the caboose.
  • For older children: Encourage children to put the animals in alphabetical order between the engine and the caboose.

TRAIN RACE
GAME ACTIVITY
SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES
SUPPLIES
Game board, train pieces, die
GIVE each child a game board and ALLOW each child to CHOOSE a train piece.

EXPLAIN children have different game boards, but they all have the same goal – to get their train to Creation Station!

ASK each child to place their train piece on their Quest Train Station. ROLL the die. INSTRUCT all children to move their train pieces on their game boards according to the chart.

Once all children have moved, SAY:

  • If you are on a GREEN space, move forward one space.
  • If you are on a YELLOW space, move backward one space.
  • If you are on a RED space, you will lose one turn while your train rests at the train stop.

CONTINUE until a child reaches Creation Station on their game board.

KID CONNECT

CONDUCTOR SAYS
GAME ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Conductor Says cards (10), die

EXPLAIN children will be playing a game like “Simon Says”. The Conductor (eGroup Leader) will choose actions for the group to perform. The other children should only complete an action if the Conductor says, “Conductor says …” before the action. If children complete the action when the Conductor did not say “Conductor says …” they have to sit out for one turn at the train stop (in the middle of the rug) for one round.

ENCOURAGE children to stand up and create a wide circle around the rug. CHOOSE a card and roll the die. INSERT the action from the card and the number from the die into the following statement: CONDUCTOR SAYS [action] [number] times! ENCOURAGE the group to complete the action.

REPEAT. Every two or three cards, READ the action statement without saying “Conductor Says.” Any children who complete the action will rest at the “train stop”for one round.

GET TO KNOW YOU

ONCE THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS
(5:00, 9:30, 11:30)

IF YOU WERE THE CONDUCTOR

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Die, leader card, Quest animal sticker

INTRODUCE the series using the series overview:

At Creation Station, we’ll make discoveries and learn about the world around us and that God made everything – the sun, moon, stars, planets, clouds, rain, oceans, animals, flowers, you, me … everything!

ROLL the die and INTRODUCE yourself. READ the question from the leader card that corresponds to the color you rolled and SHARE your answer with the eGroup.

ENCOURAGE each child to ROLL the die, introduce themselves, and ANSWER the corresponding question.

AFTER all children are introduced, PASS out a Quest animal sticker to each child. Have each child place it next to their name tag.

SAY: We are the (insert animal name) today! There are two very special rules to remember so we can have the most fun. The rules to follow are:

  1. Be Safe – How can we be safe? (keeping our hands to ourselves, sitting when others are sitting, walking instead of running, following the rules)
  2. Be Kind – How can we be kind? (listening when others are talking, sharing, obeying leaders, sitting on our bottoms so others can see)

SAY: If you can obey our special rules and are ready to have fun then put one hand in the center and repeat after me:

I am (allow response)
a (insert group name) (allow response)
I will (allow response)
be kind and safe! (allow response)
On the count of three everyone, say ‘Go (insert animal name)!’
1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . .
Go (insert group name)!

BIBLE CONNECT

WHAT IS BIBLE CONNECT?

Bible Connect is all about BIBLE CONNECTIONS: for kids to make connections with the Bible and learn to love the Bible! Children will make connections to the Bible in two ways: by hearing and talking about the Bible story and practicing the memory verse. Begin Bible Connect after the Get To Know You activity. AFTER BIBLE CONNECT CHILDREN HEAD TO FREE PLAY AND LARGE GROUP.

JESUS TEACHES ABOUT SERVING
BIBLE STORY

SUGGESTED TIME
8 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Bible Story Cards, train stickers

TELL the children we can find true stories in God’s book, the Bible!

SHOW and READ the Bible Story from the Bible story cards.

ASK the following questions to review the Bible story. Each time a child answers a question correctly, GIVE the child a train sticker.

  1. When Jesus was hungry, what did they give Him? (food to eat)
  2. When Jesus was thirsty, what did they give Him? (something to drink)
  3. When Jesus needed a place to stay, what did they do? (invited Him in)
  4. When Jesus needed clothes, what did they do? (gave Him some clothes)
  5. When Jesus was sick, what did they do? (helped Him get better)
  6. When Jesus was in prison, what did they do? (visited Him)
  7. The people didn’t remember ever feeding Jesus or giving Him clothes or doing any of those things. How did Jesus say they had served Him? (When they served others, they were also serving Jesus.)

SAY: God created us to serve! Serving means doing things to help other people. When we serve others, we’re also serving Jesus! This week is Love Week at our church, where we’ll all spend some extra time serving our community. It’s fun to come together to serve during Love Week, but that isn’t the only time we can serve. God created us to serve all the time! Repeat our main point after me:

God made me (point up)
to serve! (extend hands forward)

BIBLE CONNECT

FREEZE!
MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
7 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
playlist (download on your electronic device), memory verse train

SAY: In this series, we are learning how God created everything in the whole world. Our Bible verse says:

You (point up)
made (fist on top of fist)
the world (form a circle with arms over head)
and everything in it. (spread arms wide)
Psalm 89:11 (NCV) (open hands like a book)

PRACTICE the memory verse together a few times.

EXPLAIN when you PLAY music, the children should dance around the eGroup area. When the music STOPS, everyone will FREEZE in one of two poses. Children will be chosen to say the verse based on their pose.

SAY: Today we are learning how God created us to serve! When the music stops, you get to freeze as helping hands or helping feet. If you choose to be helping hands, hold both arms straight out in front of you with your palms facing up. Everybody try that with me now. ALLOW children to try the “helping hands” pose. If you choose to be helping feet, stomp your feet. ALLOW children to try the “helping feet” pose.

PLAY the Freeze! playlist from your electronic device. This is the ONLY approved playlist – please do not play any personal music. ENCOURAGE children to dance. After 10-15 seconds, STOP the music and SAY: FREEZE! REMIND children to strike a pose representing either helping hands or helping feet. ASK all children who chose helping feet to sit quietly while the children who chose helping hands say the verse together. REPEAT the activity several times, alternating which group (helping hands or helping feet) says the verse each time.

EXPLAIN to the group children can recite the verse each week to earn a memory verse train car for their All Aboard poster! ALLOW children an opportunity to RECITE the verse by themselves. GIVE any child who recites the verse by themselves a memory verse train car. MARK the “MV” box by that child’s name on your check-in sheet.

HEAD TO FREE PLAY, THEN LARGE GROUP.

YOU CONNECT

WHAT IS YOU CONNECT?
You Connect is about the eGroup leader (YOU!) helping children make connections with the main point and their lives. You Connect activities reinforce the main point with fun and engaging activities. BEGIN YOU CONNECT AFTER LARGE GROUP.

I SPY A WAY TO SERVE
APPLICATION ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
I Spy mats, magnifying glasses, leader sheet

SAY: God created us to serve others, and there are so many ways we can serve! In fact, if we look carefully, there are ways to serve all around us every day! Let’s see if we can spy some ways we can serve others.

GIVE each child an I Spy mat and a magnifying glass. EXPLAIN children will be playing “I Spy” as they look for ways to serve people around them. When they find the object you call out, children can PLACE the magnifying glass over the object on the I Spy mat.

NAME the first object on the leader sheet and ENCOURAGE children to find the object on their I Spy mat. Once children have found the object, READ the question for the object from the leader sheet. LEAD children in discussing possible answers. CONTINUE until all objects have been found and discussed.

SAY: There are lots of different ways we can serve the people around us. God created us to serve each other, so we should watch for ways to serve people every day! Let’s say our main point together:

God made me (point up)
to serve! (extend hands forward)

RACE TO SERVICE STATION
GAME ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
7-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES:
eKidz Love Week shirt, game board, train pieces, die, Service Stop cards (15), marker

SAY: We can serve by going somewhere with our family to help other people or by making something special for someone. Sometimes all we have to do is look around us and notice people we can help.

SHOW children the eKidz Love Week shirt. SAY: Love Week is a special time in our church where we focus on serving our community. This year for Love Week, each of you will get one of these special shirts. All you have to do to earn your shirt is serve here at church with your family when you leave today! SHOW the back of the shirt. On the back of the shirt, you can collect signatures each time you serve. If you get at least three signatures on your shirt, you can bring it back next week to get a prize! Let’s play a game together that will help us think about some ways we can serve and practice collecting signatures!

SHOW children the game board. EXPLAIN children will compete as teams to get from Creation Station to Service Station. Along the way, teams will earn one signature for serving each time they land on a Service Stop. A signature is worth two points. The first team to get to Service Station earns three extra points. The team with the most points wins!

PLACE the game board in the middle of the group. DIVIDE children into teams and seat teams at opposite ends of the game board. ASSIGN a train to each team and PLACE both trains at Creation Station. PLACE the Service Stop cards near the game board.

Teams will take turns ROLLING the die and MOVING their trains from Creation Station toward Service Station. If a train lands on a space with a “Service Stop” sign, TELL the team to CHOOSE one of the Service Stop cards. READ the card aloud and FOLLOW the directions. USE the marker to SIGN your initials in one of that team’s boxes along the side of the game board. If a train stops on a blank space, they will WAIT there until the next turn. CONTINUE until one team reaches Service Station. COUNT how many points each team has earned and DECLARE a winner!

SAY: It’s fun to play games, but now we know it is also fun to serve others! It makes God so happy when we look for ways to help people. Say our main point with me:

God made me (point up)
to serve! (extend hands forward)

To receive today’s main point train car, children will have to Remember, Think, and Follow! SAY: Let’s REMEMBER … Did the people in the Bible story serve others or only themselves? (They served others.) Let’s THINK … When the people served others, who did they also serve? (Jesus) Jesus showed us we can serve God by serving others.
