KID CONNECT

WHAT IS KID CONNECT?
Kid Connect is all about eGROUP CONNECTIONS: for you to make connections with the kids and for the kids to make connections with each other. Activities are listed in the order they are to be completed. It’s okay if you don’t complete all the activities – some activities will work better for your group than others. Begin Kid Connect when doors open. KID CONNECT ENDS WHEN THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS.

Words in italics, whether on lessons or in handouts, are meant to be said out loud to your group.  Anything not in italics is an instruction that does not necessarily need to be read aloud.

QUEST COLORING PAGE
COLORING ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Quest coloring page, crayons, die

PLACE crayons in the center of the circle and GIVE each child a coloring page. Be sure to give out the engine coloring page and the caboose coloring page first, then give out the remaining train car coloring pages.

INSTRUCT children to color their coloring page. As children color, get to know them by asking questions about their week or what they did that day.

Once most children have completed their coloring page, ENCOURAGE children to line up their coloring pages to form a train. The engine coloring page should go at the front of the train and the caboose coloring page should go at the other end. All other train car coloring pages will be in the middle.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

  • Have each child sit behind their picture. Stand at the engine and ask the child behind that picture to tell what animal is in their train car. Encourage the whole eGroup to make the noise that animal would make. Repeat for each animal in the train as you work your way to the caboose.
  • Encourage children to put the animals in order from smallest to largest between the engine and the caboose.
  • For older children: Encourage children to put the animals in alphabetical order between the engine and the caboose.

KID CONNECT

TRAIN RACE
GAME ACTIVITY
SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES
SUPPLIES
Game board, train pieces, die
GIVE each child a game board and ALLOW each child to CHOOSE a train piece.

EXPLAIN children have different game boards, but they all have the same goal – to get their train to Creation Station!

ASK each child to place their train piece on their Quest Train Station. ROLL the die. INSTRUCT all children to move their train pieces on their game boards according to the chart.

Once all children have moved, SAY:

  • If you are on a GREEN space, move forward one space.
  • If you are on a YELLOW space, move backward one space.
  • If you are on a RED space, you will lose one turn while your train rests at the train stop.

CONTINUE until a child reaches Creation Station on their game board.

KID CONNECT

CONDUCTOR SAYS
GAME ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Conductor Says cards (10), die

EXPLAIN children will be playing a game like “Simon Says”. The Conductor (eGroup Leader) will choose actions for the group to perform. The other children should only complete an action if the Conductor says, “Conductor says …” before the action. If children complete the action when the Conductor did not say “Conductor says …” they have to sit out for one turn at the train stop (in the middle of the rug) for one round.

ENCOURAGE children to stand up and create a wide circle around the rug. CHOOSE a card and roll the die. INSERT the action from the card and the number from the die into the following statement: CONDUCTOR SAYS [action] [number] times! ENCOURAGE the group to complete the action.

REPEAT. Every two or three cards, READ the action statement without saying “Conductor Says.” Any children who complete the action will rest at the “train stop”for one round.

GET TO KNOW YOU

ONCE THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS
(5:00, 9:30, 11:30)

IF YOU WERE THE CONDUCTOR

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Die, leader card, Quest animal sticker

INTRODUCE the series using the series overview:

At Creation Station, we’ll make discoveries and learn about the world around us and that God made everything – the sun, moon, stars, planets, clouds, rain, oceans, animals, flowers, you, me … everything!

ROLL the die and INTRODUCE yourself. READ the question from the leader card that corresponds to the color you rolled and SHARE your answer with the eGroup.

ENCOURAGE each child to ROLL the die, introduce themselves, and ANSWER the corresponding question.

AFTER all children are introduced, PASS out a Quest animal sticker to each child. Have each child place it next to their name tag.

SAY: We are the (insert animal name) today! There are two very special rules to remember so we can have the most fun. The rules to follow are:

  1. Be Safe – How can we be safe? (keeping our hands to ourselves, sitting when others are sitting, walking instead of running, following the rules)
  2. Be Kind – How can we be kind? (listening when others are talking, sharing, obeying leaders, sitting on our bottoms so others can see)

SAY: If you can obey our special rules and are ready to have fun then put one hand in the center and repeat after me:

I am (allow response)
a (insert group name) (allow response)
I will (allow response)
be kind and safe! (allow response)
On the count of three everyone, say ‘Go (insert animal name)!’
1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . .
Go (insert group name)!

BIBLE CONNECT

WHAT IS BIBLE CONNECT?

Bible Connect is all about BIBLE CONNECTIONS: for kids to make connections with the Bible and learn to love the Bible! Children will make connections to the Bible in two ways: by hearing and talking about the Bible story and practicing the memory verse. Begin Bible Connect after the Get To Know You activity. AFTER BIBLE CONNECT CHILDREN HEAD TO FREE PLAY AND LARGE GROUP.

CREATION DAY 1 : LIGHT AND DARK
BIBLE STORY

SUGGESTED TIME
8 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
The Beginner’s Bible, train stickers

TELL the children we can find true stories in God’s book, the Bible!

SAY: We’re going to read the whole story of how God created the world. Today, we’re going to learn about day one. Everybody hold up one finger! LEAD children in holding up one finger. Be sure to listen extra carefully when I read about the first day!

SHOW and READ the Bible Story on pages 7-13 from The Beginner’s Bible.

ASK the following questions to review the Bible story. Each time a child answers a question correctly, GIVE the child a train sticker.

  1. In the beginning, was the world full or empty? (empty)
  2. Was there light or darkness everywhere? (darkness)
  3. Who created the light and separated the light from the darkness? (God)
  4. What did God call the light? (day)
  5. What did God call the darkness? (night)

SAY: God is so amazing! When the world was completely dark, He created light! God separated the light and dark so we could have day and night. Repeat our main point after me:

God made (point up)
light (flash fingers open by face)
and dark! (close fists by face)

FREEZE!
MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
7 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
playlist (download on your electronic device), memory verse

SAY: This month we are learning about how God created everything in the whole world. Our new verse says:

You (point up)
made (fist on top of fist)
the world (form a circle with arms over head)
and everything in it. (spread arms wide)
Psalm 89:11 (NCV) (open hands like a book)

PRACTICE the memory verse together a few times.

EXPLAIN when you play music, the children will dance around the eGroup area. When the music STOPS, everyone will FREEZE in one of two poses. Children will be chosen to say the verse based on their pose.

SAY: Today we are learning how God created light and dark. When the music stops, you get to freeze as light or dark. If you choose to be light, jump and land with your arms and legs spread out, and open your eyes as wide as you can. Everybody try that with me now. ALLOW children to try the “light” pose. If you choose to be dark, crouch down on the floor and cover your eyes. ALLOW children to try the “dark” pose.

PLAY the Freeze! playlist from your electronic device. This is the ONLY approved playlist – please do not play any personal music. ENCOURAGE children to dance. After 10-15 seconds, STOP the music and SAY: FREEZE! REMIND children to strike a pose representing either light or dark. ASK all children who chose dark to sit quietly while the children who chose light say the verse together. REPEAT the activity several times, alternating which group (light or dark) says the verse each time.

EXPLAIN to the group children can recite the verse each week to earn a memory verse train car for their All Aboard poster!

NOTE: Children cannot receive a memory verse train week one of the series.

HEAD TO FREE PLAY, THEN LARGE GROUP.

YOU CONNECT

WHAT IS YOU CONNECT?
You Connect is about the eGroup leader (YOU!) helping children make connections with the main point and their lives. You Connect activities reinforce the main point with fun and engaging activities. BEGIN YOU CONNECT AFTER LARGE GROUP.

LIGHT AND DARK
APPLICATION ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Light and Dark cards, yellow paper, black paper

SAY: Before God created light, the world was completely dark! There are times when we need it to be dark, but there are also things that are easier or better in the light. We’re going to look at some of the everyday things we do and decide if they are things that are better in the light or in the dark.

LAY all of the cards on the floor with the pictures facing up. EXPLAIN if the card shows something we do in the light, children will put the card on the yellow paper. If the card shows something we do in the dark, children will put the card on the black paper.

ASK a child to choose a card and hand it to you. READ the back of the card out loud and ENCOURAGE children to respond. PLACE the card on the yellow or black paper as directed. REPEAT until all cards are sorted.

SAY: The light and the dark are both important for us. We need the light for our daytime activities, but there are plenty of things like fireworks that are much better in the dark! I’m so thankful God gave us both light and dark. Let’s say our main point together:

God made (point up)
light (flash fingers open by face)
and dark! (close fists by face)

CREATING ART FROM THE DARK
GAME ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
7-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES:
scratch art paper, scratch art sticks

SHOW children a piece of scratch art paper. SAY: What color is this paper? (black) Does black make you think of light or dark? (dark) In the beginning the world was black and dark, but because God added light, we can see and enjoy so many beautiful things! These papers are black right now, just like when there was no light, but you are going to create something beautiful and colorful from it, just like God did after He created light!

TALK with children about things that make light, like the sun, lightbulbs, or flashlights. GIVE each child a piece or scratch art paper and a scratch art stick. EXPLAIN children will create beautiful pictures on their paper by using the stick to scratch out a design.

ENCOURAGE children to create a picture of something that creates light. If children finish creating their light pictures early, they may have ONE additional piece of scratch art paper to create another picture of something God made.

SAY: Our black paper reminds us of when there was no light, but when we scratched off the black, we could see beautiful colors underneath. These pictures remind us that God created light. Say our main point with me:

God made (point up)
light (flash fingers open by face)
and dark! (close fists by face)

ALL ABOARD!
COLLECTIBLE ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
All Aboard poster, main point train, glue, sharpie marker

HOLD UP the All Aboard poster and SAY: Each weekend you visit Wonder! Clubhouse you can collect main point train cars to add to your poster. These train cars will help remind us of all the things God created! Collect six train cars and bring your poster back to Quest to receive a special prize!

To receive today’s main point train car, children will have to Remember, Think, and Follow! SAY: Let’s REMEMBER … What did God create in today’s Bible story? (light and dark) Let’s THINK … Did God create light and dark on day one or day five? (day one) God created light, dark, and so many other amazing things! Because God made everything, we should thank Him for what He’s created! What will you thank God for today? (light and dark) Let’s say our main point together:

God made (point up)
light (flash fingers open by face)
and dark! (close fists by face)

GIVE each child an All Aboard poster and main point train car. HELP children GLUE the train car on their poster. WRITE each child’s name on the name space on the front of the All Aboard poster with the Sharpie marker.

SAY: Take your All Aboard poster home and hang it in a place you can see it everyday to help you remember what we learn in Quest and to spend time with Jesus. Today we learned the first thing God made was light and dark! Let’s say our main point together:

God made (point up)
light (flash fingers open by face)
and dark! (close fists by face)

MEMORY VERSE COLORING PAGE
GAME ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
10-15 MINUTES
