KID CONNECT

WHAT IS KID CONNECT?
Kid Connect is all about eGROUP CONNECTIONS: for you to make connections with the kids and for the kids to make connections with each other. Activities are listed in the order they are to be completed. It’s okay if you don’t complete all the activities – some activities will work better for your group than others. Begin Kid Connect when doors open. KID CONNECT ENDS WHEN THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS.

Words in italics, whether on lessons or in handouts, are meant to be said out loud to your group.  Anything not in italics is an instruction that does not necessarily need to be read aloud.

QUEST COLORING PAGE
COLORING ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Quest coloring page, crayons, die

PLACE crayons in the center of the circle and GIVE each child a coloring page. Be sure to give out the engine coloring page and the caboose coloring page first, then give out the remaining train car coloring pages.

INSTRUCT children to color their coloring page. As children color, get to know them by asking questions about their week or what they did that day.

Once most children have completed their coloring page, ENCOURAGE children to line up their coloring pages to form a train. The engine coloring page should go at the front of the train and the caboose coloring page should go at the other end. All other train car coloring pages will be in the middle.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

  • Have each child sit behind their picture. Stand at the engine and ask the child behind that picture to tell what animal is in their train car. Encourage the whole eGroup to make the noise that animal would make. Repeat for each animal in the train as you work your way to the caboose.
  • Encourage children to put the animals in order from smallest to largest between the engine and the caboose.
  • For older children: Encourage children to put the animals in alphabetical order between the engine and the caboose.

KID CONNECT

TRAIN RACE
GAME ACTIVITY
SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES
SUPPLIES
Game board, train pieces, die
GIVE each child a game board and ALLOW each child to CHOOSE a train piece.

EXPLAIN children have different game boards, but they all have the same goal – to get their train to Creation Station!

ASK each child to place their train piece on their Quest Train Station. ROLL the die. INSTRUCT all children to move their train pieces on their game boards according to the chart.

Once all children have moved, SAY:

  • If you are on a GREEN space, move forward one space.
  • If you are on a YELLOW space, move backward one space.
  • If you are on a RED space, you will lose one turn while your train rests at the train stop.

CONTINUE until a child reaches Creation Station on their game board.

KID CONNECT

CONDUCTOR SAYS
GAME ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Conductor Says cards (10), die

EXPLAIN children will be playing a game like “Simon Says”. The Conductor (eGroup Leader) will choose actions for the group to perform. The other children should only complete an action if the Conductor says, “Conductor says …” before the action. If children complete the action when the Conductor did not say “Conductor says …” they have to sit out for one turn at the train stop (in the middle of the rug) for one round.

ENCOURAGE children to stand up and create a wide circle around the rug. CHOOSE a card and roll the die. INSERT the action from the card and the number from the die into the following statement: CONDUCTOR SAYS [action] [number] times! ENCOURAGE the group to complete the action.

REPEAT. Every two or three cards, READ the action statement without saying “Conductor Says.” Any children who complete the action will rest at the “train stop”for one round.

GET TO KNOW YOU

ONCE THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS
(5:00, 9:30, 11:30)

IF YOU WERE THE CONDUCTOR

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Die, leader card, Quest animal sticker

INTRODUCE the series using the series overview:

At Creation Station, we’ll make discoveries and learn about the world around us and that God made everything – the sun, moon, stars, planets, clouds, rain, oceans, animals, flowers, you, me … everything!

ROLL the die and INTRODUCE yourself. READ the question from the leader card that corresponds to the color you rolled and SHARE your answer with the eGroup.

ENCOURAGE each child to ROLL the die, introduce themselves, and ANSWER the corresponding question.

AFTER all children are introduced, PASS out a Quest animal sticker to each child. Have each child place it next to their name tag.

SAY: We are the (insert animal name) today! There are two very special rules to remember so we can have the most fun. The rules to follow are:

  1. Be Safe – How can we be safe? (keeping our hands to ourselves, sitting when others are sitting, walking instead of running, following the rules)
  2. Be Kind – How can we be kind? (listening when others are talking, sharing, obeying leaders, sitting on our bottoms so others can see)

SAY: If you can obey our special rules and are ready to have fun then put one hand in the center and repeat after me:

I am (allow response)
a (insert group name) (allow response)
I will (allow response)
be kind and safe! (allow response)
On the count of three everyone, say ‘Go (insert animal name)!’
1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . .
Go (insert group name)!

BIBLE CONNECT

WHAT IS BIBLE CONNECT?

Bible Connect is all about BIBLE CONNECTIONS: for kids to make connections with the Bible and learn to love the Bible! Children will make connections to the Bible in two ways: by hearing and talking about the Bible story and practicing the memory verse. Begin Bible Connect after the Get To Know You activity. AFTER BIBLE CONNECT CHILDREN HEAD TO FREE PLAY AND LARGE GROUP.

CREATION DAY 2 : SKY AND WATER
BIBLE STORY

SUGGESTED TIME
8 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
The Beginner’s Bible, train stickers

TELL the children we can find true stories in God’s book, the Bible!

SAY: We’re going to read the whole story of how God created the world. Today, we’re going to learn about day two. Everybody hold up two fingers! LEAD children in holding up two fingers. Be sure to listen extra carefully when I read about the second day!

SHOW and READ the Bible Story on pages 7-13 from The Beginner’s Bible.

ASK the following questions to review the Bible story. Each time a child answers a question correctly, GIVE the child a train sticker.

  1. On day two, what did God say He would divide? (the waters)
  2. God separated the waters in the clouds from which other waters? (the ocean)
  3. What did God call the space between the clouds and the ocean? (sky)
  4. Who created the water and the sky? (God)

SAY: God is so big and so powerful! The oceans and the sky are enormous and beautiful, and God created them for us to enjoy. Repeat our main point after me:

God made (point up)
sky (spread arms high)
and water! (spread arms low)

FREEZE!
MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
7 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
playlist (download on your electronic device), memory verse train

SAY: This month we are learning how God created everything in the whole world. Our Bible verse says:

You (point up)
made (fist on top of fist)
the world (form a circle with arms over head)
and everything in it. (spread arms wide)
Psalm 89:11 (NCV) (open hands like a book)

PRACTICE the memory verse together a few times.

EXPLAIN when you PLAY music, the children should dance around the eGroup area. When the music STOPS, everyone will FREEZE in one of two poses. Children will be chosen to say the verse based on their pose.

SAY: Today we are learning how God created the sky and water. When the music stops, you get to freeze as sky or water. If you choose to be sky, stand on your tiptoes and reach as high as you can. Everybody try that with me now. ALLOW children to try the “sky” pose. If you choose to be water, lay down on the floor and pretend to swim under the water. ALLOW children to try the “water” pose.

PLAY the Freeze! playlist from your electronic device. This is the ONLY approved playlist – please do not play any personal music. ENCOURAGE children to dance. After 10-15 seconds, STOP the music and SAY: FREEZE! REMIND children to strike a pose representing either sky or water. ASK all children who chose sky to sit quietly while the children who chose water say the verse together. REPEAT the activity several times, alternating which group (sky or water) says the verse each time.

EXPLAIN to the group children can recite the verse each week to earn a memory verse train car for their All Aboard poster! ALLOW children an opportunity to RECITE the verse by themselves. GIVE any child who recites the verse by themselves a memory verse train car. MARK the “MV” box by that child’s name on your check-in sheet.

HEAD TO FREE PLAY, THEN LARGE GROUP.

WHAT IS YOU CONNECT?
You Connect is about the eGroup leader (YOU!) helping children make connections with the main point and their lives. You Connect activities reinforce the main point with fun and engaging activities. BEGIN YOU CONNECT AFTER LARGE GROUP.

SKY AND WATER
APPLICATION ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
blue signs, Day 2 cards, leader sheet

SAY: I’m so thankful God created the sky and water! There are so many things we see and use all the time that we can find in the sky or water.

GIVE each child a blue sign and PLACE two blue signs in front of you on the floor, one showing the sky side and one showing the water side.

EXPLAIN children will decide if objects they see can be found in the sky or water. If they think it’s found in the sky, they’ll fly the side of their blue signs with the cloud up over their heads. If they think it’s found in the water, they’ll hold the side with the waves near the ground and move it like it’s floating in the water.

SHUFFLE all of the Day Two cards together. HOLD UP one of the cards and ENCOURAGE children to use their blue sign to show if it’s found in the sky or water. READ the instructions for that object from the leader sheet and ENCOURAGE children to respond. LAY the card on the appropriate blue sign on the floor. REPEAT until children have sorted all of the cards. KEEP the cards separated; they will be used in the next game.

SAY: These are all things we can find in the sky or water. If God hadn’t created the sky and water, there would be nowhere for birds to fly or fish to swim! Let’s say our main point together:

God made (point up)
sky (spread arms high)
and water! (spread arms low)

DAY TWO CHARADES
GAME ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
7-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES:
Day Two cards (sorted from previous activity), timer

SAY: We’re going to play a game where I will create some of the things we find in the sky or water with my body and you have to guess what I’m creating!

DIVIDE children into two teams and SEAT teams in lines on either side of the rug. ASSIGN one team to be Team Sky and the other to be Team Water.

EXPLAIN children will have one minute to help their team guess as many of the cards as they can. The eGroup leader will ACT OUT the object on each card. Once the team correctly guesses what the object is, the eGroup leader will SET the card aside and act out the next card. The team will continue until all cards have been guessed correctly or until time is up. REMIND children they can only guess when it is their team’s turn.

PLACE the Day Two sky cards face down in front of you. TURN the timer over, PICK UP the first card, and ACT OUT the object on the card. ENCOURAGE Team Sky to guess what it is and REMIND Team Water to remain quiet. Once Team Sky has correctly guessed the object, SET ASIDE the card and ACT OUT the object on the next card. CONTINUE until all sky cards have been guessed correctly or until time runs out.

REPEAT for Team Water.

COUNT the number of cards guessed correctly by each team. The team with the most correct guesses wins!

SAY: There are so many things we see and use all the time that can be found in the sky or water! We can thank God for the sky and water because He created them! Say our main point with me:

God made (point up)
sky (spread arms high)
and water! (spread arms low)

ACTIVITY MODIFICATIONS

  • Younger Children/3’s: Instead of competing as teams, allow the whole eGroup to work together. See if the children can guess more sky objects or more water objects.
  • Older Children: Divide cards among the children on each team and allow children to act the cards out for their teams.
