KID CONNECT

WHAT IS KID CONNECT?
Kid Connect is all about eGROUP CONNECTIONS: for you to make connections with the kids and for the kids to make connections with each other. Activities are listed in the order they are to be completed. It’s okay if you don’t complete all the activities – some activities will work better for your group than others. Begin Kid Connect when doors open. KID CONNECT ENDS WHEN THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS.

Words in italics, whether on lessons or in handouts, are meant to be said out loud to your group.  Anything not in italics is an instruction that does not necessarily need to be read aloud.

QUEST COLORING PAGE
COLORING ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Quest coloring page, crayons, die

PLACE crayons in the center of the circle and GIVE each child a Quest coloring page. INSTRUCT children to color their coloring page. As children color, get to know them by asking questions about their week or what they did that day.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

  • Use a die to determine the crayon color the group will use. Allow children 10-30 seconds to color using this color. Roll the die again and switch crayon colors.
  • Use the number die to determine how many items to color with a certain color crayon. Allow children to color the number of items then roll the die again.
  • Have children take turns rolling the die. Children will compete to be the first to color their coloring page, coloring the number of items rolled each turn.

KID CONNECT

BUILDING TOGETHER
GAME ACTIVITY
SUGGESTED TIME
10-15 MINUTES
SUPPLIES
Game board, Quest animal game pieces, location cards, die, Jenga blocks
SPREAD the game board out in the middle of the circle. EXPLAIN children will work with a partner to get their Quest animal game pieces to a specific location and then build something special together. The first team to get both Quest animals to their location and complete their block structure wins!

ALLOW each child to choose a Quest animal game piece. PLACE the Quest animal on the house on the game board that is the same color as that Quest animal. ASSIGN children to work as a team by PAIRING each child with the child next to them. Groups of three can be created as needed.

GIVE each team a location card. TELL children their goal is to get their Quest animal from the house to the location on that card. HELP children find the location on the game board as needed.

ROLL the die. All players will MOVE their Quest animals according to the number rolled. USE the table to TELL players how to move.

REPEAT until both members of a team arrive at their assigned location. GIVE that team ten Jenga blocks. INSTRUCT that team to turn over their location card and use the blocks to build a structure that looks just like the picture. All constructions can lie flat on the ground; they do not need to be three-dimensional.

While those children build, CONTINUE rolling the die and proceed with the game. Other teams may BUILD their structures as they arrive at their assigned locations. The first team to finish building the block structure on the back of their location card wins!

KID CONNECT

CONSTRUCTION ZONE
GAME ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
game board, Quest animal game pieces, construction cards, Jenga block

SPREAD the game board out in the center of the circle. EXPLAIN children will earn blocks by guessing which location card you will draw from the stack. They will use these blocks to build something and the best construction will win!

ALLOW each child to choose a Quest animal game piece. ASSIGN children to work as a team by PAIRING each child with the child next to them. Groups of three can be created as needed.

ASK each child to guess which location they think you’ll choose and place their Quest animal game piece on that location on the game board. TAKE a construction card from the stack. GIVE each child with a Quest animal game piece on that location two Jenga blocks. PLACE the construction card face down over that location so the “Under Construction” side is facing up. REMIND children not to place their Quest animals on that location anymore. REPEAT until all construction cards have been used and placed on the game board.

NAME a structure for partners to build from the suggested list below. ASK children to work with their partner to create this structure using the blocks they have earned. After about a minute, ANNOUNCE they have ten seconds left to finish their structure and COUNT DOWN for them out loud. CHOOSE the best structure to be the winner!

GET TO KNOW YOU

ONCE THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS
(5:00, 9:30, 11:30)

WOULD YOU RATHER…?

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Die, leader card, Quest animal sticker

INTRODUCE the series using the series overview:

Friends do lots of fun things together. We eat together and play together. Friends take care of one another, help one another, and praise God together, too! God gave us a very special gift when He gave us the gift of friendship. Our lives are better when we build them together with our friends!

ROLL the die and INTRODUCE yourself. READ the question from the leader sheet that corresponds to the color you rolled and SHARE your answer with the eGroup.

ENCOURAGE each child to ROLL the die, introduce themselves, and ANSWER the corresponding question.

AFTER all children are introduced, PASS out a Quest animal sticker to each child. Have each child place it next to their name tag.

SAY: We are the (insert animal name) today! There are two very special rules to remember so we can have the most fun. The rules to follow are:

  1. Be Safe – How can we be safe? (keeping our hands to ourselves, sitting when others are sitting, walking instead of running, following the rules)
  2. Be Kind – How can we be kind? (listening when others are talking, sharing, obeying leaders, sitting on our bottoms so others can see)

SAY: If you can obey our special rules and are ready to have fun then put one hand in the center and repeat after me:

I am (allow response)
a (insert group name) (allow response)
I will (allow response)
be kind and safe! (allow response)
On the count of three everyone, say ‘Go (insert animal name)!’
1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . .
Go (insert group name)!

BIBLE CONNECT

WHAT IS BIBLE CONNECT?

Bible Connect is all about BIBLE CONNECTIONS: for kids to make connections with the Bible and learn to love the Bible! Children will make connections to the Bible in two ways: by hearing and talking about the Bible story and practicing the memory verse. Begin Bible Connect after the Get To Know You activity. AFTER BIBLE CONNECT CHILDREN HEAD TO FREE PLAY AND LARGE GROUP.

DAVID AND JONATHAN SAY GOODBYE
BIBLE STORY

SUGGESTED TIME
8 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Bible Story Cards, tool stickers

TELL the children we can find true stories about Jesus in God’s book, the Bible!

SHOW and READ the Bible Story from the Bible story cards.

ASK the following questions to review the Bible story. Each time a child answers a question correctly, GIVE the child a tool sticker.

  1. Who was David’s best friend? (Jonathan)
  2. Who did David think didn’t like him anymore? (King Saul)
  3. What did Jonathan tell David to do while he went to see King Saul? (hide)
  4. How did King Saul react when he realized David wasn’t at his party? (He was angry.)
  5. When Jonathan realized King Saul wanted to hurt David, did he try to stop King Saul, or did he run to warn David? (He ran to warn David.)
  6. How did David and Jonathan feel when David had to run away? (very sad)
  7. What did David and Jonathan promise each other before David left? (They would always be friends.)

SAY: David and Jonathan had to make a tough decision. They didn’t want to be apart, but they knew it was the only way to keep David safe. Jonathan comforted David by reminding him that they would always be friends, even if David had to go away. Repeat our main point after me:

God gives me (thumbs to chest)
good friends (two thumbs up)
to comfort me! (hug self)

BIBLE CONNECT

SAY IT TOGETHER
MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
7 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
tool cards, memory verse tool

SAY: This month we are learning about one of the greatest gifts God has given us – our friends! Our new Bible verse teaches us how to build great friendships. It says:

Therefore (point out)
encourage one another (two thumbs up)
and build each other up. (push palms up to sky)
1 Thessalonians 5:11 (open hands like a book)

PRACTICE the memory verse together a few times.

GIVE each child a tool card. EXPLAIN each tool has a “friend” – a tool that helps that tool do its job. ASK children to find the friend who has the tool card that goes with theirs. TELL children they can look at the smaller picture at the top of their tool card if they aren’t sure which tool to look for. Once children have found their partners, INSTRUCT children to sit in a circle beside their partners.

SAY: Stand and say the verse with your partner if both of you…

  • have the same color hair.
  • are the same age.
  • are wearing the same color.
  • can balance your tool card on your fingertip.

EXPLAIN to the group children can recite the verse each week to earn a memory verse tool for their Building Together poster!

ALLOW children an opportunity to RECITE the verse by themselves. GIVE any child who recites the verse by themselves a Memory Verse Tool.

HEAD TO FREE PLAY, THEN LARGE GROUP.

YOU CONNECT

WHAT IS YOU CONNECT?
You Connect is about the eGroup leader (YOU!) helping children make connections with the main point and their lives. You Connect activities reinforce the main point with fun and engaging activities. BEGIN YOU CONNECT AFTER LARGE GROUP.

FRIENDSHIP TOOLBOX
APPLICATION ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Toolbox poster, tool cards

LAY the toolbox poster in the center of the group and PLACE the tool cards with the pictures facing up on top of the toolbox.

SAY: Do these look like tools to you? (No.) When we think of building a house or a tower, we think of tools like hammers and saws. But to build a strong friendship, we need different tools. These tools are going to help us think about how we can comfort our friends when they’re having a tough time!

ASK a child to choose a tool card from the toolbox. READ the back of the tool card and ENCOURAGE children to respond.

SAY: When your friend is hurt, sad, or lonely, there are lots of things you can do to comfort them! God wants us to help our friends feel better, just like we’d want our friends to comfort us when we need it. Let’s say our main point together.

God gives me (thumbs to chest)
good friends (two thumbs up)
to comfort me! (hug self)

SILLY CREATIONS
GAME ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
7-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES:
Wikki Stix, construction mat, die

SAY: Another way we can comfort our friends is by doing something silly to cheer them up! Making someone laugh is a great way to help them feel better.

EXPLAIN children will work with a partner to build something silly out of Wikki stix. Each round, the silliest one will earn extra Wikki stix to use in the next round.

PAIR each child with the child seated beside them. GIVE each pair a construction mat to build on. ROLL the die. USE the chart to GIVE each pair the designated number of Wikki stix and TELL them what to create.

GIVE children one to two minutes to make their Wikki stix creations. CHOOSE the silliest one and GIVE that pair two extra Wikki stix in the next round.

COLLECT the Wikki stix. REPEAT two more times.

SAY: Being silly and laughing together is one way friends can help each other feel better. Let’s remember our main point:

God gives me (thumbs to chest)
good friends (two thumbs up)
to comfort me! (hug self)

BUILDING TOGETHER
COLLECTIBLE ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Building Together poster, main point tools, glue, sharpie marker

HOLD UP the Building Together poster and SAY: Each weekend you visit Wonder! Clubhouse you can collect main point tools to add to your poster. These tools will help remind us why our friends are so important! Collect five tools and bring your poster back to Quest to receive a special prize!

To receive today’s main point tool, children will have to Remember, Think, and Follow! SAY: Let’s REMEMBER … who were the friends in our Bible story? (David and Jonathan) Let’s THINK … What promise did Jonathan make to David to comfort him? (to stay best friends) Jonathan comforted David with support and kind words because that’s a way friends can show love to each other! If you can FOLLOW the example set in our Bible story, let’s say our main point together:

God gives me (thumbs to chest)
good friends (two thumbs up)
to comfort me! (hug self)

GIVE each child a Building Together tool.

SAY: Take your tool home and glue it to your Building Together poster. Make sure to look at your poster every day to remember what we learn in Quest and to spend time with Jesus. Today we learned God gives us friends who can comfort us when things are tough! Let’s say our main point together:

God gives me (thumbs to chest)
good friends (two thumbs up)
to comfort me! (hug self)

VIPs AND CHILDREN WHO HAVE NOT RECEIVED A BUILDING TOGETHER POSTER: GIVE the child a Building Together poster and GLUE the main point tool on their poster. WRITE the child’s name on the front of the Building Together poster with the Sharpie marker.
