MINI COLORING PAGES

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: crayons, mini coloring pages (set of 36)

What you do: Shuffle the stack of mini coloring pages. Place the crayons in the center of the circle and give each child three mini coloring pages.

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Encourage children to color their mini coloring pages. As children color, get to know them by asking questions about their week or what they did or are planning to do that day.

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Make sure children’s names are on their coloring sheets. Use the coloring sheets as game pieces for the “Kid Connect: Special Delivery” activity below.

SPECIAL DELIVERY

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: game pieces (mini coloring pages from previous activity), giant game board (1), large foam die (1), instruction card

What you do: Spread the giant game board across the center of the eGroup space. Make sure each child has three mini coloring pages with the child’s name on them — these will become the game pieces for this activity.

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Explain children will compete to be the first to get all three of their game pieces on the game board. When you roll the die, you will read one of the descriptions for that number from the instruction card, explaining which children can lay one of their game pieces on the game board. To lay a piece down, children should call out the name of the object on one of their game pieces and then lay the game piece down on a square on the game board with the same picture. If a child forgets to say the name of the object on their game piece before laying it down, they must take the game piece back. The first child to get all three of their game pieces on the game board wins!

Each time the same number is rolled twice in a row, shout, “SPECIAL DELIVERY!” and deliver each of the children’s game pieces back to them, clearing all pieces off the board.

If both spots featuring an object are already covered, a child can lay their game piece on top of the previous one by calling out the name of the object two times. If they forget to say the name of the object two times, they must take their game piece back.

BETHLEHEM IN ACTION

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: Christmas animal stickers

What you do: Encourage children to stand up and spread out around the eGroup space.

What you say: “The story of Jesus’ birth is one of the most wonderful stories in the Bible! It would have been so exciting to be there in Bethlehem when Jesus was born. We’re going to play a game where we act out some of the things that might have happened the night Jesus was born!”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Explain you will say the phrase, “I have a special delivery!” and then ask children to act out something that might have happened when Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Tell children you will deliver a special Christmas Quest animal sticker to the child who does the best job acting out each action! If children complete an action when you didn’t start with, “I have a special delivery!” they will have to sit down for the next action.

For each action, give a sticker to the child who does the best job acting out that action. (If two children do equally well, it’s ok to give a sticker to each one!) After reading an instruction without the phrase, “I have a special delivery,” encourage any children who did the action to sit down, then re-read the same action beginning with the phrase, “I have a special delivery!”

What you say:

  • “I have a special delivery! Who can act like a donkey carrying Mary to Bethlehem on its back?”
  • “I have a special delivery! Who can act like a cow in the stable?”
  • “Who can act like a little baby lying in a manger?”

Once the Worship Experience Begins

SETTING THE SCENE

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: stable mat, nativity cards (12)

What you do: Seat children in a circle and place the stable mat in the center of the eGroup. Spread the nativity cards around (but not on) the table mat.

What you say: “This month we’re celebrating the birth of the most important person who ever lived on earth! Do you know who I’m talking about? (Pause for children to respond.) That’s right; we’re celebrating Jesus’ birthday! Before we get started, let’s set up our nativity scene to help us remember what it looked like when Jesus was born while we get to know each other better!”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Encourage each child to say their name to the eGroup. After sharing their name, each child should choose one of the nativity cards. Read a question from the back of the card, encourage the child to answer, then allow the child to place the nativity card where he/she thinks it belongs on the stable mat.

After all children are introduced, pass out a Quest animal sticker to each child. Have each child place it next to their name tag.

What you say: “We are the (insert animal name) today! There are two very special rules to remember so we can have the most fun. The rules to follow are:

  1. Be Safe – How can we be safe? (keeping our hands to ourselves, sitting when others are sitting, walking instead of running, following the rules) 
  2. Be Kind – How can we be kind? (listening when others are talking, sharing, obeying leaders, sitting on our bottoms so others can see)

If you can obey our special rules and are ready to have fun then put one hand in the center and repeat after me:

THE SHEPHERDS | LUKE 2:8-20

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: The Beginner’s Bible, Bible story stickers

What you say: “We can find true stories in God’s book, the Bible!”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Show and read the Bible story from pages 277-281 in the Beginner’s Bible. Ask the Bible story review questions. Each time a child answers a question correctly, give the child a sticker. If children can’t remember the answer, take time as an eGroup to look back through the Bible story and find the answer together.

What you say: “Let’s see how much you remember from our Bible story!”

  1. “Who were watching the sheep in the fields?” (the shepherds)
  2. “Who showed up in the fields with God’s light shining all around?” (an angel)
  3. “Did the angel want the shepherds to be afraid or not afraid?”
    (not afraid)
  4. “Did the angel have good news or bad news?”(good news)
  5. “Where did the angel tell the shepherds the Savior had been born?”(in Bethlehem)
  6. “Did a choir of angels or another flock of sheep show up to sing praises to God?” (a choir of angels)
  7. “Did the shepherds stay with their sheep or rush to Bethlehem?” (They rushed to Bethlehem.)
  8. “Did the shepherds find baby Jesus?” (yes)
  9. “Did the shepherds tell everyone about baby Jesus or did they keep Him a secret?” (They told everyone about baby Jesus.)

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you say: “I’m so glad the angels told the shepherds about Jesus. God sent Jesus because He loved those shepherds, and He sent Jesus because He loves you and me, too! How do we know God loves us?” (God gave us Jesus.)

VERSE VOICES

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: no supplies

What you say: “Our Bible verse tells us God gave us the greatest gift ever — Jesus!”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Say the memory verse and do the motions in front of the children. After showing them once, encourage children to practice the memory verse with you using different voices.

What you say: “I am going to say our memory verse. Everyone watch me! (Demonstrate the memory verse as shown in the sidebar.) Now let’s do it all together! Are you ready? (Say the memory verse with the motions several times.) Now let’s try the verse in some silly voices!”

  • “Say the verse in a high voice, like the angels singing!”
  • “Say the verse in a crying voice, like a little baby!”
  • “Say the verse in a silly sheep voice!”

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you say: “Great job, friends! We know God loves us because He gave us Jesus!”

What you do: Explain to the group children can recite the verse each week to earn a memory verse card for their collectible poster! Allow children an opportunity to recite the verse by themselves. Give any child who recites the verse by themselves a memory verse card. Mark the “MV” box by that child’s name on your check-in sheet.

VERSE DELIVERY

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: special delivery envelopes

What you do: Seat children in a circle.

What you say: “Our Bible verse tells us God gave us the greatest gift ever — Jesus! To practice our verse, we’re going to pass a special delivery envelope around our circle while I say our special delivery chant. If you’re holding the envelope when I finish the chant, you can choose a friend in our eGroup to deliver the envelope to, and then the two of you can say the memory verse together!”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Encourage children to pass the envelope around the circle while you say the special delivery chant (to the tune of “Eeny-meeney-miney-mo”): “It’s a special delivery, yes it’s true! God gave His Son to me and you! I’m excited and you are, too, because God gave His Son to me and you!” When the chant is over, ask the child holding the envelope to deliver it to a friend, then encourage the two of them to stand and say the verse together. Repeat until all children have had the opportunity to say the verse.

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you say: “Great job, friends! We know God loves us because He gave us Jesus!”

What you do: Explain to the group children can recite the verse each week to earn a memory verse card for their collectible poster! Allow children an opportunity to recite the verse by themselves. BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: matching cards (16)

What you do: Spread the matching cards on the floor by laying the cards face-down in a 4×4 grid.

What you say: “Just like the angels told the shepherds about Jesus, we can tell people about Jesus, too! Let’s play a game to help us think about some of the people we can tell and how we can tell them.”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Explain children will take turns turning over two cards. If the two cards match, read the prompt below that corresponds to the matching cards. The child can hold onto the two cards until the end of the game. If the two cards do not match, the child will return them to the same spots, face-down.

eGL Tip: As you discuss different people children can tell and the ways they can tell them, encourage older children to name a specific people they could invite, call, etc.

What you say: (As a match is found, read the prompt below for that match.)

  • QUEST CHRISTMAS INVITE: One way to tell someone about Jesus is to invite them to come to church with you. Last week you got an invitation that looks like this to our special “Happy Birthday Jesus Party!” Just like we invited you to our party, you can invite a friend to come with you. If you can invite someone to come to church with you, give me two thumbs up! (Encourage children to give two thumbs up.)
  • KIDS ON SWINGS: You can tell your neighbors about Jesus while you play together. If you can think of a neighbor you can tell about Jesus, give a friend beside you a hug! (Encourage children to give hugs.)
  • PHONE: You can tell a friend or family member about Jesus by calling them on a phone. If someone in your family has a phone you could use to tell people about Jesus, pull on your ears gently! (Encourage children to pull on their ears.)
  • KIDS HIGH-FIVING: Whether you’re at home, school, or anywhere else, you can tell all your friends about Jesus. If you can think of a friend you can tell about Jesus, give the friend beside you a high-five! (Encourage children to give high-fives.)
  • FAMILY: Many of you will be spending time with lots of different people in your family over the next few weeks. If there is someone in your family you can tell about Jesus, wave your arms in the air! (Encourage children to wave their arms.)
  • WAITER: You meet people you can tell about Jesus all the time, like the waiter at a restaurant or the cashier at the grocery store. If you can tell new people you meet about Jesus, pat your knees! (Encourage children to pat their knees.)
  • SHEEP (2 pairs): Just like the shepherds, we can tell everyone the good news that God gave us Jesus. Let’s all stand up and yell, “God gave us Jesus!”
    (Encourage children to stand and yell together.)

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you say: “Since Jesus is the greatest gift ever, we should tell everyone we know about Him! God gave Jesus for all of us, so He wants everyone to know about His great gift. How do we know God loves us?” (God gave us Jesus.)

eKIDZ JOURNAL AND MAIN POINT CARD

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: eKidz eGroup prayer journal, pen, sample Wonder! Clubhouse poster, main point cards (1 per child), glue, Sharpie marker

What you say: “God can do great things through us when we learn and live out what the Bible says! Today we learned about when the angels told the shepherds about Jesus!

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Take out your eGroup prayer journal and pen. Write down each child’s name and what they say in the journal. Pray with the group.

What you say: “When the angels told the shepherds the good news that God gave us Jesus, the shepherds ran to see baby Jesus. Then they ran to tell everyone else the good news! Now that we know the good news that God gave us Jesus, who can we run and tell? When I say your name, tell me one person you can tell the good news that God gave us Jesus. (Write each child’s name and what they say in the journal.)

There are so many people we can share the good news with! Let’s pray together now and ask God to help us tell them. Dear God, we have the best news ever to tell people. Please help (name each child) tell (read the list the children made) the good news that God gave us Jesus. We want everyone to know You love us so much that You gave us Your Son, Jesus, to be our friend forever. We love You! In Jesus’ name, amen.”

What you do: Give each child a main point card. Encourage children to color their main point cards as you talk. Show the prizes on the back of the sample Wonder! Clubhouse poster.

What you say: “Each weekend you visit Wonder! Clubhouse you’ll get main point cards to add to your Wonder! Clubhouse poster. Collect six cards and bring your poster back to Quest to receive a special prize! We have some really special Quest animal prizes that we can’t wait to share with you once you bring back your filled poster!

Today’s main point card says, ‘The angels tell about Jesus.’ I want you to color your main point card now. Add this card to your Wonder! Clubhouse poster at home.

VIPs AND CHILDREN WHO NEED A NEW WONDER! CLUBHOUSE POSTER: Give the child a poster and glue the main point card on it. Write the child’s name on the front of the poster with the Sharpie marker.

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you say: “Make sure to keep your poster in a place you can see it every day to help you remember what we learn in Quest and to spend time with Jesus. Today we learned the angels told about Jesus!

What you do: Take your journal home with you so you can pray for your eGroup children by name throughout the week.

MAIN POINT MIRRORING

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: no supplies

What you do: Spread children around the eGroup space.

What you say: “For this game, you’ll need to REALLY concentrate. I want you to do exactly what I do and say exactly what I say. You’ll be like little mirrors of me while we practice our main point, “The angels tell about Jesus.”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Explain you will strike a pose or say an action while saying today’s main point: “The angels tell about Jesus.” Children should repeat the main point while doing the exact same pose or action. After a few rounds, children who have done a great job mirroring your actions can have the opportunity to be the leader and make up poses or actions for the rest of the group!

Poses or actions could include:

  • cupping your hands around either side of your mouth like you’re shouting
  • standing with your feet spread apart and both hands in the air
  • running in place
  • rocking a baby
  • stomping your feet
  • jumping up and down
  • standing with your fists on your hips
  • doing a silly dance
  • standing on one leg with one arm up in the air
  • hopping on one foot
  • spinning in a circle
  • standing very still so only your mouth is moving
  • holding your thumb and pinkie to your face like a telephone
  • waving your arms over your head
  • clapping your hands as you say each word
