KID CONNECT

GIANT COLORING PAGE COLLECTION

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: crayons, giant coloring page set (12 pages), giant coloring page key

What you do: Place the crayons in the center of the circle and give each child a page from the coloring page set. Explain that after they color, children will put all the pieces from the set together to form one giant picture that totally rocks!

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: As children color, get to know them by asking questions about their week or what they did or are planning to do that day.

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Encourage children to help you as you arrange the pages children colored with any unused coloring pages from the set to form one large picture. Keep the large picture assembled as it will be used in the next activity.

I SPY

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: coloring sheets from previous activity

What you say: “Wow! Our Quest animals rock! There are some smaller things hidden in our big picture. Let’s see if you can find them all!”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Explain each child will have a turn to find a hidden object and show the rest of the group where it can be found. When there is more than one of the same object, a child should point out just one of them and then let another child have a turn. Continue until all objects have been found.

What you say: “All right, let’s see if you can find…”

  • “One balloon!”
  • “Two jump ropes!”
  • “Three acorns!”
  • “Four balls!”
  • “Five flowers!”

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Set the coloring pages aside until the end of the worship experience. Children may take home the part of the picture they colored. Any leftover pages should be discarded.

LETS ROCK

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: rock band strips (1 per child)

What you do: Give each child a rock band strip.

What you say: “Before we can be ready to rock together, I need to make sure you are familiar with the instruments a good rock band needs. What instrument do you see in the blue square? (guitar) What instrument do you see in the green square? (tambourine) What instrument do you see in the red square? (keyboard) What instrument do you see in the yellow square? (drums) Great job! Now let’s rock!”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Explain you will call out different instruments one at a time, and children will race to “play” the instruments by patting the instrument on their rock band strip. As you call the instruments out faster and faster, watch out for kids who either pat the wrong instrument or don’t pat one at all before you call out the next one. If a child misses an instrument, they will turn over their rock band strip for one round and help you watch the other kids as they “play” their instruments. Once another child misses an instrument, the first child can turn their rock band strip back over and rejoin the game.

At first, begin calling out instruments slowly. As children become comfortable with where the instruments are, call them out more quickly. Watch for children who don’t tap the correct instrument and encourage them to turn their rock band strip over. Begin again by calling out instruments slowly and then increase the speed. Once another child misses an instrument and is out for a round, encourage the other child to begin playing again. Repeat as long as time and interest remain.

WHO’S IN OUR BAND

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: instrument cards (set of 12), microphone (1)

What you do: Spread the instrument cards around the center of the eGroup with the instruments facing up.

What you say: “This summer we’re learning about kids in the Bible who rock because they obeyed God and did great things! Before we learn more about these great kids and how we can rock too, let’s get to know each other better.”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Explain that children will introduce themselves to the band by speaking into the band’s special microphone. After each child introduces themselves, they will choose one of the instrument cards and answer the question on the back. Continue until all children have been introduced and have answered a question.

After all children are introduced, pass out a Quest animal sticker to each child. Have each child place it next to their name tag.

What you say: “We are the (insert animal name) today! There are two very special rules to remember so we can have the most fun. The rules to follow are:

  1. Be Safe – How can we be safe? (keeping our hands to ourselves, sitting when others are sitting, walking instead of running, following the rules) 
  2. Be Kind – How can we be kind? (listening when others are talking, sharing, obeying leaders, sitting on our bottoms so others can see)

If you can obey our special rules and are ready to have fun then put one hand in the center and repeat after me:

I am (allow response)

I will (allow response)

be kind and safe! (allow response)

On the count of three everyone, say ‘Go (insert animal name)!’

What you say: “Now that we all know each other and we know the rules, we’re ready to hear a Bible story about a kid who really rocked!”

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: God’s Story for Me Bible, Bible story stickers

What you say: “We can find true stories in God’s book, the Bible!”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Show and read the Bible story from pages 159-163 in the God’s Story for Me Bible. Ask the Bible story review questions. Each time a child answers a question correctly, give the child a sticker.

What you say: “Let’s see how much you remember from our Bible story!”

  1. “When Samuel heard a voice in the night, what did it say?” (“Samuel!”)
  2. “Who did Samuel think was calling his name?” (Eli)
  3. “Was Eli calling Samuel’s name?”(no)
  4. “Did Samuel hear the voice calling his name again, or did it stop?” (He heard it again.)
  5. “If Samuel heard the voice again, Eli told Samuel to say, ‘Speak, Lord. I’m ________.’” (listening)
  6. “Who was calling Samuel’s name?” (God)
  7. “Did Samuel listen to God?” (yes)
  8. “Did Samuel obey God?” (yes)

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you say: “You know what? You rock, because God made you to listen to Him. We can listen to God just like Samuel listened to God. Tell me: Who can do what God wants you to do?” (I can do what God wants me to do.) “That’s right, friends. You can listen to God, and that makes you ROCK!”

VERSE VOICES

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: memory verse cards

What you say: “This month our Bible verse says our God made us to do good things. You don’t have to wait until you’re grown up to do what God wants you to do; you can start now!”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Say the memory verse and do the motions in front of the children. After showing them once, encourage children to practice the memory verse with you using different voices.

What you say: “I am going to say our memory verse. Everyone watch me! (Demonstrate the memory verse as shown in the sidebar.) Now let’s do it all together! Are you ready? (Say the memory verse with the motions several times.) Now let’s try the verse in some silly voices!”

  • “Say the verse in a deep voice, like a bass guitar!”
  • “Say the verse in a high voice, like a flute”
  • “Say the verse in a loud voice, like a big drum!”

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you say: “Fantastic job, everyone! Our memory verse tells us that God made us to do good things for Him, and even kids like you can start doing good things now!”

What you do: Explain to the group children can recite the verse each week to earn a memory verse card for their collectible poster! Allow children an opportunity to recite the verse by themselves. Give any child who recites the verse by themselves a memory verse card. Mark the “MV” box by that child’s name on your check-in sheet.

VERSE RHYTHM

  • Pat your knees as you say each word.
  • Alternate patting your knees and clapping your hands as you say each word.
  • Alternate patting your knees, clapping your hands, and tapping your shoulders as you say each word.

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you say: “Fantastic job, everyone! Our memory verse tells us that God made us to do good things for Him, and even kids like you can start doing good things now!”

What you do: Explain to the group children can recite the verse each week to earn a memory verse card for their collectible poster! Allow children an opportunity to recite the verse by themselves. Give any child who recites the verse by themselves a memory verse card. Mark the “MV” box by that child’s name on your check-in sheet.

WAKE UP AND LISTEN

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: no supplies

What you say: “Samuel rocked because he listened to God. We can listen to God, too! God may not speak out loud to us like He did to Samuel, but there are still lots of ways we can hear Him if we teach our ears to listen. Let’s think about some ways we can listen to God!”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Read the statements below and encourage children to stand up and stretch if you describe a way to listen to God or lie down and pretend to sleep if you describe something that is not a way to listen to God. Encourage children to return to a seated position between statements.

What you say: “Listen carefully friends! I’m going to read some things you could choose to do. If it’s a way to listen to God, stand up and stre-e-e-tch like you just woke up. If it’s not a way to listen to God, like down and pretend to go to sleep.”

  • “You could read your Bible.” (Children should stand and stretch.)
  • “You could watch your favorite TV show.” (Children should lie down and pretend to sleep.)
  • “You could listen to worship music.” (Children should stand and stretch.)
  • “You could pray before you go to bed.” (Children should stand and stretch.)
  • “You could eat lots of cookies.” (Children should lie down and pretend to sleep.)
  • “You could listen to people who know a lot about God.” (Children should stand and stretch.)

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you say: “Even if we don’t hear God speaking out loud to us, there are lots of ways we can teach ourselves to listen to what He has to say! When we listen to God, we can do the things He wants us to do. Who can do what God wants you to do?” (I can do what God wants me to do.)

eKIDZ JOURNAL AND MAIN POINT CARD

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: eKidz eGroup prayer journal, pen, sample Wonder! Clubhouse poster, main point cards (1 per child), glue, Sharpie marker

What you say: “God can do great things through us when we learn and live out what the Bible says! Today we learned we can listen to God. Let’s think about some places we can listen to God.”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Take out your eGroup prayer journal and pen. Write down each child’s name and what they say in the journal. Pray with the group.

What you say: “God had important things to say to Samuel even though Samuel was still a kid. Samuel listened to God and did what God wanted him to do. That’s why Samuel rocked! God wants you to listen to Him, too. He has important things to say to you. Let’s make a list of places where we spend lots of time, like our bedroom, outside, church, or anywhere! When we pray we can use our list and ask God to help us listen to Him no matter where we go. When I say your name, tell me one place to write in our prayer journal.” (Write each child’s name and what they say in the journal.)

“Let’s pray together now! Dear God, I think it is so wonderful that You have important things to say to all of us—even kids! I pray that my friends will grow up listening to You, like Samuel did, so they will know what You want them to. Help them when they are at (name the places listed) and everywhere else they go to always listen to You. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

What you do: Give each child a main point card. Encourage children to color their main point cards as you talk. Show the prizes on the back of the sample Wonder! Clubhouse poster.

What you say: “Each weekend you visit Wonder! Clubhouse you’ll get main point cards to add to your Wonder! Clubhouse poster. Collect six cards and bring your poster back to Quest to receive a special prize! We have some really special Quest animal prizes that we can’t wait to share with you once you bring back your filled poster!

Today’s main point card says, ‘I can listen to God.’ I want you to color your main point card now. Add this card to your Wonder! Clubhouse poster at home.

VIPs AND CHILDREN WHO NEED A NEW WONDER! CLUBHOUSE POSTER: Give the child a poster and glue the main point card on it. Write the child’s name on the front of the poster with the Sharpie marker.

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you say: “Make sure to keep your poster in a place you can see it every day to help you remember what we learn in Quest and to spend time with Jesus. Today we learned we can listen to God!”

What you do: Take your journal home with you so you can pray for your eGroup children by name throughout the week.

What you do: Encourage children to help you arrange the pages from the giant coloring page set to form one large picture. Explain you will describe objects in the picture for children to find. When children find the picture you’re describing, they should stand and say the main point (“I can listen to God.”) into the microphone.

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Describe characteristics of the objects listed below by saying, “I spy something ________.” Fill in the blank with any words that could describe the object, such as its color, size, what it’s near, or what it’s used for.
