I can live God’s way by being brave.

Bible Story

Moses in the Sea
Exodus 13:17-14:31

Memory Verse

God’s way (point up)
is perfect. (two thumbs up)
2 Samuel 22:31, NIrV (open hands like a book)

KID CONNECT #1

WHAT IS KID CONNECT?
KID CONNECT is all about eGROUP CONNECTIONS: for you to make connections with your eGroup and for the kids to make connections with each other. Activities are listed in the order they are to be completed. It’s okay if you don’t complete all the activities – some activities will work better for your group than others. Begin Kid Connect when doors open. KID CONNECT ENDS WHEN THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS.

QUEST COLORING PAGE

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: crayons, coloring page, die
What you do: Place the crayons in the center of the circle and give each child a coloring page. Tell children they may color only the Quest animal pictures. Do not let children turn the paper over until the entire eGroup begins the next activity.

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: As children color, get to know them by asking questions about their week or what they did or are planning to do that day.

Extension Activities

  • Use a die to determine the crayon color the group will use. Allow children 10-30 seconds to color using this color. Roll the die again and switch crayon colors.
  • Use the number die to determine how many items to color with a certain color crayon. Allow children to color the number of items then roll the die again.
  • Have children take turns rolling the die. Children will compete to be the first to color their coloring page, coloring the number of items rolled each turn.

KID CONNECT #2

HIDDEN PICTURE PUZZLE

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: Hidden Picture puzzle page, crayons
What you do: Tell each child to turn over their coloring page to find the Hidden Picture puzzle.
What you say: “This month is all about going on a great adventure. Some of our Quest animal friends are on an exciting camping adventure together but it looks like some of them might be hiding! I think they hid some of our camping supplies, too. Let’s see if we can find them all!”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Show children the key on the right side of the picture that shows the hidden objects to look for. One item at a time, encourage children to see if they can find each hidden object, then color the object before finding the next one.

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Make sure children’s names are on their page and set the pages aside until children are picked up at the end of the worship experience.

KID CONNECT #3

BUG ADVENTURES

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: Bug net
What you do: Ask all the children to stand in a circle and take one big step back to spread out.
What you say: “On a camping adventure, you’ll probably encounter all kinds of bugs! Let’s see who can be the best bug on our adventure!”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Explain children will take turns being the bugs or the Bug Adventurer. When you tell them what kind of bug to be, they will move around the circle like that bug. One child, the Bug Adventurer, will “catch” the best bug moving around the circle by tapping them gently on the arm with the bug net. That child gets to be the next Bug Adventurer. Repeat until children have acted like each type of bug.

What you say: “The Bug Adventurer is going to catch the best bug in our camp! Remember to move carefully around the circle and don’t bump into any other bugs. Here we go!

• Fly gracefully like a butterfly!

• Buzz around like a bee!

• March like an ant!

• Glide slooooooowly like a snail!

• Jump like a jumping spider!

• Scoot around on your belly like a caterpillar!

• Fly super fast like a dragonfly!

• Scurry around like a beetle!”

• Hop super high like a grasshopper!

• Open and close your wings like a ladybug!”

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you say: “You all did a great job acting like bugs! I think we’re going to have a great time together on this great adventure!”

GET TO KNOW YOU

CAMPING QUESTIONS

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: bug net, bug cards, Quest animal stickers

What you do: Mix up the bug cards and put them in the bug net.

What you say: “This month as we go on a great adventure together, we’re learning God has great plans for each of us and His way is always perfect!”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Choose a bug card from the bug net. Introduce yourself and then read the question on the back. Share your answer with the eGroup. Encourage each child to draw a card, introduce themselves, and answer the question on the bug card.

After all children are introduced, pass out a Quest animal sticker to each child. Have each child place it next to their name tag.

What you say: “We are the (insert animal name) today! There are two very special rules to remember so we can have the most fun. The rules to follow are:

1. Be Safe – How can we be safe? (keeping our hands to ourselves, sitting when others are sitting, walking instead of running, following the rules)

2. Be Kind – How can we be kind? (listening when others are talking, sharing, obeying leaders, sitting on our bottoms so others can see)

If you can obey our special rules and are ready to have fun then put one hand in the center and repeat after me:

I am (allow response)
a (insert group name) (allow response) I will (allow response)
be kind and safe! (allow response)

On the count of three everyone, say ‘Go (insert animal name)!’ 1 .. . 2 . . . 3 . . .
Go (insert group name)!”

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you say: “Now that we all know each other and we know the rules, we’re ready to start the great adventure with our Bible story and hear something exciting that God wants to teach us today!”

BIBLE CONNECT: BIBLE STORY

WHAT IS BIBLE CONNECT?

BIBLE CONNECT is all about BIBLE CONNECTIONS: for kids to make connections with the Bible and learn to love the Bible! Children will make connections to the Bible in two ways: by hearing and talking about the Bible story and practicing the memory verse. Begin Bible Connect after the Get To Know You activity. AFTER BIBLE CONNECT CHILDREN HEAD TO FREE PLAY AND LARGE GROUP.

MOSES IN THE SEA

EXODUS 13:17-14:31

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: The Beginner’s Bible, camping stickers

What you say: “We can find true stories in God’s book, the Bible!”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Show and read the Bible story on pages 111-115 from The Beginner’s Bible. Ask the Bible story review questions. Each time a child answers a question correctly, give the child a sticker.

What you say: “Let’s see how much you remember from our Bible story!”

  1. “Where did God lead the Israelites?” (to the edge of the Red Sea)
  2. “Why were the Israelites afraid?” (They couldn’t go any farther and

    Pharaoh’s army was coming.)

  3. “What came between the Israelites and Pharaoh’s army?” (God’s cloud)
  4. “What did God tell Moses to do with his staff?” (raise it over the sea)
  5. “What happened when Moses raised his staff over the sea?” (God pushed

back the sea to make a path through it.)

  6. “After the Israelites crossed through the sea, what happened when Moses raised his staff again?” (The sea swept away Pharaoh and his army.)

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you say:

“It must have been so scary when the Israelites thought they were trapped between the sea and Pharaoh’s army! But because Moses chose to be brave and obey God instead of giving up or running away, God made a way for them to go right through the sea! We can live God’s way by being brave, just like Moses and the Israelites!”

BIBLE CONNECT: MEMORY VERSE

Choose one of the memory verse activity options to help children learn and practice the Bible verse together.

NOTE: Children cannot receive a memory verse card week one of the series.

VERSE VOICES

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: no supplies
What you say: “This month we’re learning how God’s way is perfect! When we live by following what God tells us to do in the Bible, we’re always making the right choice.”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Say the memory verse and do the motions in front of the children. After showing them once, encourage children to practice the memory verse with you using different voices.

What you say: “I am going to say our memory verse. Everyone watch me! (Demonstrate the memory verse as shown in the sidebar.) Now let’s do it all together! Are you ready? (Say the memory verse with the motions several times.) Great job! I think you’re ready to say our verse in some silly voices now.”

  • “Say the verse in a quiet voice, like you’re trying to sneak through the woods without waking up a bear!”
  • “Say the verse in a loud voice, like you’re trying to yell all the way down from the top of a mountain!”
  • “Say the verse in a squeaky voice like a cute woodland animal!”

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Explain to the group children can recite the verse each week to earn a memory verse card for their collectible poster! Allow children an opportunity to recite the verse by themselves. Give any child who recites the verse by themselves a memory verse card. Mark the “MV” box by that child’s name on your check-in sheet.

ANY WAY YOU SAY IT

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: spinner
What you say: “We’re going to practice our verse by saying it different ways! We’ll face different ways and we’ll move different ways as we say it. But no matter which way we face or which way we say it, our verse this month teaches us God’s way is always perfect!”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Spin the spinner. Instruct the eGroup to face the direction the arrow is pointing, then use the picture to determine which way to say the verse. If it points to the bear, say the verse while pretending to run away from a bear. If it points to the mountain, say the verse while pretending to climb a mountain. If it points to the fish, say the verse while pretending to reel in a fish. If it points to the canoe, say the verse while pretending to paddle a canoe across a lake. Repeat until the group has said the verse at least three different ways.

YOU CONNECT #1

YOU CONNECT is about the eGroup leader (YOU!) helping children make connections with the main point and their lives. You Connect activities reinforce the main point with fun and engaging activities. BEGIN YOU CONNECT AFTER LARGE GROUP.

A WAY THROUGH THE WATER

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: blue cups (30), situation cards

What you say: “This month we’re learning God’s way is perfect, and today we’re learning we can live God’s way by being brave! Let’s think about some ways we can be brave. While we do that, we’ll earn cups to help us build a path through the ‘water’ and march across the dry land, just like the Israelites!”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Read a situation card and encourage children to respond. As children finish discussing the situation, give them five of the cups. Repeat until all situations have been discussed and all cups have been earned. Encourage children to help you build two parallel “walls” with the cups. Cups can either form two longer lines of 15 cups each, or you can line up eight cups on each side and then stack seven cups on top of each line. Lead children in walking through the cup walls, just as Moses and the Israelites walked through the walls of water in the Red Sea

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you say: “That was SO fun! But can you imagine what it must have been like for the Israelites to see all that water stacked up on either side of them, with a path right down the middle for them walk through? They had to be brave to go through the sea God’s way! I’m so glad Moses chose to be brave and live God’s way. Whose way is perfect?” (God’s way is perfect!)

YOU CONNECT #2

eKidz JOURNAL AND COLLECTIBLE

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: eKidz prayer journal, pen, collectible poster, main point card, glue, Sharpie marker
What you say: “God can do great things through us when we learn and live out what the Bible says! Today we learned God’s way is perfect, and we can live His way by being brave. Now it’s time to write in our eGroup prayer journal and pray together.”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Take out your eKidz prayer journal and pen. Write down each child’s name and what they say. Pray with the group.

What you say: “For our journal activity today, let’s each share one situation where God can help us be brave. Maybe you want Him to help you be brave when you’re alone in your bed at night, or when you stay with a babysitter while your parents go somewhere. When we pray, we can ask God to help us live His way by being brave in those situations.” (Write what children say by their name.)

“Let’s pray together now! Dear God, thank you for always being with us and helping us be brave, like when (read what the children shared)! We believe Your way is perfect and we can live your way by being brave. We love You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

What you do: Give each child a main point card. Encourage children to color their main point cards as you talk.

What you say: “Each weekend you visit Wonder! Clubhouse you’ll get main point cards to add to your collectible poster. Collect six cards and bring your poster back to Quest to receive a special prize!

Today’s main point card says, ‘I can live God’s way by being brave.’ I want you to color your main point card now. Add this card to your collectible poster at home.”

VIPs AND CHILDREN WHO HAVE NOT RECEIVED A COLLECTIBLE POSTER: Give the child a collectible poster and glue the main point card on their poster. Write the child’s name on the front of the poster with the Sharpie marker.

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you say: “Make sure to keep your poster in a place you can see it every day to help you remember what we learn in Quest and to spend time with Jesus. Today we learned God’s way is perfect. We can live God’s way by being brave!”

What you do: Take your journal home with you so you can pray for your eGroup children by name throughout the week.

YOU CONNECT #3

CHOOSING TO BE BRAVE

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: no supplies

What you say: “I’m so thankful God helps me be brave! There are lots of ways I can choose to be brave every day! Let’s act out some time when we can choose to be brave!”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Read each example of a time when children might be afraid. Encourage children to give suggestions of how they could be brave in that situation. Lead the group in acting out a way children could be brave for each one as directed. If a child comes up with another great way to be brave, you can act that out, too!

What you say: “I’m going to give you some examples of times when you might feel afraid. I need you all to help me think of some ideas for how we could be brave instead of afraid. Then we’ll act out how we can be brave!

• What could you do if you see a spider on your floor? (Pause for children to share responses.) Great ideas! Let’s all stomp on a pretend spider!

  • What could you do when your friend wants you to swim with her but you aren’t sure you’re ready to? (Pause for children to share responses.) I love those ideas! Let’s all pull on our floaties so we can feel safe!
  • What could you do when you’re at the dentist and you’re nervous about the dentist putting her tools in your mouth to clean your teeth? (Pause for children to share responses.) Great! Let’s all squeeze our eyes shut tightly!
  • What could you do if your friend wants you to pet his new dog, but you’re scared because it looks kind of big? (Pause for children to share responses.) Good thinking! Let’s all smile and hold out our hands for the dog to smell!
  • What could you do when you are nervous about riding a two-wheel bike by yourself for the first time? (Pause for children to share responses.) Great ideas! Let’s all put on a helmet, knee pads, and elbow pads so we won’t get hurt even if we tip over!
  • What could you do when you have to get a shot at the doctor’s office? (Pause for children to share responses.) Good thinking! Let’s all hold someone’s hand and count to five!

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you say: “There are so many ways we can choose to be brave even when things might feel scary! We can live God’s way by being brave, and His way is perfect!”
