KID CONNECT

WHAT IS KID CONNECT?
Kid Connect is all about eGROUP CONNECTIONS: for you to make connections with the kids and for the kids to make connections with each other. Activities are listed in the order they are to be completed. It’s okay if you don’t complete all the activities – some activities will work better for your group than others. Begin Kid Connect when doors open. KID CONNECT ENDS WHEN THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS.

Words in italics, whether on lessons or in handouts, are meant to be said out loud to your group.  Anything not in italics is an instruction that does not necessarily need to be read aloud.

SNACK ATTACK
COLORING ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
10-15 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
crayons, popcorn bucket coloring page (1 per child), color die, number die

WELCOME children to your group. Let them know how happy you are they are in Quest and how much fun we are going to have today!

SAY: Today we are headed to Quest Cinemas to learn how we can be a good example like Jesus! But before we head to the theater, we need our favorite movie snack – popcorn!

PLACE crayons in the center of the circle and GIVE each child a popcorn bucket. INSTRUCT children to color the popcorn bucket. As children color, talk about the picture they are coloring.

CONTINUE until the popcorn buckets are colored or as time allows.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

  • Use the color die to determine the crayon color the group will use. Allow children 10-30 seconds to color using this color. Roll the color die again and switch crayon colors.
  • Use the number die to determine the part of the picture to color. Allow children to color the corresponding number rolled on their coloring page, then roll the die again.
  • Have children take turns rolling either die. Children will compete to be the first to color their coloring page, only coloring what was rolled on their turn.

SAY: We are almost ready to head to Quest Cinemas, but what’s missing from our popcorn buckets? (popcorn) Let’s see who can fill their popcorn bucket with the most popcorn!

EXPLAIN children will take turns ROLLING the number and color dice and FILLING their popcorn bucket with popcorn or COMPLETING an action. If the color yellow is rolled, the child will collect popcorn stickers to add to their popcorn bucket. For any other color rolled, the child will complete an action.

The number die determines how many repetitions of an exercise or the number of popcorn stickers to add the popcorn bucket.

To win the game, a child needs to have filled their popcorn bucket with eight pieces of popcorn.

CONTINUE until one child as a full popcorn bucket! CONGRATULATE the child and GIVE the child a popcorn sticker. ENCOURAGE the child to scratch the sticker to smell the delicious popcorn smell!

NOTE: Collect the coloring pages/game boards after playing Popcorn! Get Your Popcorn! This will cut down on distractions and allow children to focus on the next activity. Each child will need to take his or popcorn bucket to large group to enter the Quest Cinemas theater.

seek and find tube, popcorn question cards, number dice, hidden object list, timer

DIVIDE the group into two teams and PLACE the seek and find tube in the center of the eGroup. EXPLAIN teams will compete to see who can collect the most popcorn (popcorn questions cards) by finding the most objects from the seek and find tube.

CHOOSE one team to go first. ROLL the number die to determine how pieces of popcorn the team can collect for finding an object in the seek and find tube.

CALL OUT an object from the hidden object list and turn the timer over. The team has 30 seconds to find the object to earn pieces of popcorn.

AFTER 30 seconds, award popcorn if the object was found and GIVE the seek and find tube to the other team.

CONTINUE as time allows.

INTRODUCE the series using the series overview:

Join us each weekend at Quest Cinemas as we go on a Bible Adventure! We will discover new things in the Bible, learn our memory verse, pray and talk to God, and sing songs to God!

SAY: We can’t go an a Bible Adventure at Quest Cinemas without one of my favorite things – popcorn!

SHOW children the popcorn bucket. PICK a piece of popcorn from the popcorn bucket and introduce yourself. READ the question from the piece of popcorn and SHARE your answer with the group.

CHOOSE one child to pick a piece of popcorn and have the child SHARE his or her name. READ the question out loud and have the child answer the question. PASS the popcorn bucket to the next child. CONTINUE for each child.

AFTER all children are introduced, PASS out a Quest animal sticker to each child. Have each child place it next to their name tag.

SAY: We are the (insert group name) today! There are two very special rules to remember so we can have fun today. The rules to follow are:

  1. Be Safe – How can we be safe? (keeping our hands to ourselves, sitting when others are sitting, walking instead of running, following the rules)
  2. Be Kind – How can we be kind? (listening when others are talking, sharing, obeying leaders, sitting on our bottoms so others can see)

SAY: If you can obey our special rules and are ready to have fun then put one hand in the center and repeat after me:

I am (allow response)
A (insert group name) (allow response)
I will (allow response)
Be kind and safe! (allow response)
On the count of three everyone, say ‘Go (insert group name)!’

BIBLE CONNECT

WHAT IS BIBLE CONNECT?
Bible Connect is all about BIBLE CONNECTIONS: for kids to make connections with the Bible and learn to love the Bible! Children will make connections to the Bible in two ways: by hearing and talking about the Bible story and practicing the memory verse. Begin Bible Connect after the Get To Know You activity. AFTER BIBLE CONNECT CHILDREN HEAD TO FREE PLAY AND LARGE GROUP.

TELL the children we can find stories about Jesus in God’s book, the Bible! 

SHOW and READ the Bible Story using the Bible story cards.

ASK and SAY the following to review the Bible story. Give children a high five when he or she answers!

Who were the first man and woman? (Adam and Eve)

Where did they live? (a beautiful garden)

In the beautiful garden, Satan came to tempt Adam and Eve in the form of what animal? (a serpent/snake)

What did God tell Adam and Eve not to eat from one of the trees in the garden? (fruit)

Did Adam and Eve believe the serpent and eat the fruit from that one tree? (yes)

After eating the fruit, what happened to Adam and Eve? (they knew things they hadn’t known before, they were naked, they were scared)

When God called to Adam and Eve, did they know they had made a wrong choice? (yes)

Because Adam and Eve made a wrong choice, did they have to leave the garden forever? (yes)

SAY: God told Adam and Eve how to obey Him, but they didn’t listen. Adam and Eve made the wrong choice by eating the fruit from a certain tree. Adam and Eve should have prayed to God and asked Him to help them make the right choice. Sometimes we make wrong choices, but we can choose to listen to God and obey. God can help us make right choices! Repeat our main point after me:

PRACTICE the memory verse. Do the motions and say the verse together a few times.

James 1:5 (open hands like a book)

SAY: When we need to know how to make a right choice, this verse helps us remember we can pray and ask God!

PLAY Popcorn Partners.

LAY the popcorn bucket cards facedown in the center of the circle. EXPLAIN each child gets to turn over two popcorn bucket cards and if the pictures match, the child will stand up and walk around the circle. The child will tap each child’s head while counting to the number on their popcorn bucket card to find their popcorn partner. This child will stand up and together the popcorn partners will recite the memory verse.

AFTER reciting the verse, both children will sit down and the child chosen as the popcorn partner will turn over two popcorn bucket cards.

If a child turns over two cards which do not match, those cards are turned facedown again. It becomes the next child’s turn whether the pictures do or do not match.

PLAY as time allows or until all matches are found.

EXPLAIN to the group that any child who recites this verse at the end of the series will receive a special prize!

HEAD TO FREE PLAY, THEN LARGE GROUP.

SAY: Did Jesus always make the right choice or the wrong choice? (the right choice) Jesus always showed wisdom by making right choices. When we make right choices, we are showing wisdom, too! Does anyone know what letter the word “wisdom” begins with? (W) Everyone hold up one hand and make a W with their fingers? SHOW children how to use three fingers to make a W.

EXPLAIN you will READ a situation which shows someone making the right or the wrong choice. If children think it shows using wisdom and making the right choice, children will use their fingers to HOLD UP a W. If children think the situation shows making the wrong choice, they will FLIP the W upside down.

SAY: Let’s practice! When I say “wise choice,” hold up a W. When I say “unwise choice,” flip your W upside down. PRACTICE this a few times until children understand.

REMIND children to keep their hands to themselves during this activity.

READ the situation cards. CONTINUE playing until all situation cards have been READ.

SAY: We show wisdom when we make the right choice! God helps us make the right choice. Let’s say our main point together:

GAME ACTIVITY

SAY: During our Bible adventure, Emily used her picture passes to help us answer the question, ‘How can I make the right choice?’. Does anyone remember what Emily used to carry her picture passes? (Allow children to answer.) That’s right! She used her adventure bag.

SHOW the adventure bag to children and SAY: This is my adventure bag. Today, we are going on an Apples to Apples Adventure! Adam and Eve made the wrong choice when they ate the fruit God told them not to. One of my favorite fruits is an apple. Let’s see what’s in my adventure bag!

OPEN the adventure bag and PULL OUT the apple cards. GIVE each child three red apple cards.

EXPLAIN children will try to earn a green apple card from you by making the right choice. You will turn over a green apple card and each child will CHOOSE one of their own red apple cards to lay down. You will choose the red apple card you think best matches the green apple card and AWARD that child the green apple card.

SHOW one green apple card to the group and LAY it where everyone can see. ENCOURAGE children to lay down one red apple card they think is the right choice. When you CHOOSE a winner, SAY: You made the right choice! Great job – you earned one green apple card!

CONTINUE playing until all green apple cards have been awarded. Whoever has the most green apple cards at the end of the game wins.

QUEST CINEMAS MOVIE POSTER
COLLECTIBLE ACTIVITY

Quest Cinemas movie poster, movie ticket (1 per child) popcorn bucket, popcorn question cards (from From Get To Know You activity), crayons

HOLD UP a Quest Cinemas movie poster and SAY: Each weekend you visit Quest Cinemas you can collect another movie ticket for your movie poster. Collect four movie tickets and bring your movie poster back to Quest. Flash has a special prize for you at the concession stand!

If a child does not have a Quest Cinemas movie poster, the child will receive one when he or she leaves.

To receive today’s movie ticket, each child will find a piece of popcorn with a picture of a movie ticket. HOLD the popcorn bucket (with the popcorn question cards in the bucket) in the air and SAY: Movie popcorn is much more fun when it’s shared with everyone! When you SAY: “everyone!” THROW the pieces of popcorn in the air to land in the center of the group.

ENCOURAGE children to grab one piece of popcorn and LOOK to see if it has a picture of a movie ticket. GIVE each child holding a piece of popcorn with a picture of a movie ticket a movie ticket. Children holding a piece of popcorn that does not have a picture of a movie ticket will POP in the air five times like they are a popping piece of popcorn.

COLLECT all popcorn question cards in the popcorn bucket and REPEAT. CONTINUE until all children have received a movie ticket.

WRITE each child’s name on the back of the movie ticket and ALLOW children to color their tickets.

SAY: Take your movie ticket home and glue it to your Quest Cinemas move poster. Look at your poster everyday to help you remember what we learn in Quest and to spend time with Jesus. Today we learned we can show wisdom when we make the right choice! How can we make the right choice? Let’s say our main point together:

CHOOSE one child to start the game by ROLLING the number dice to determines how many repetitions of an action to complete. The child will then PICK a popcorn bucket card after COMPLETING the action. CONTINUE until each child has completed an action and PICKED a popcorn bucket card. The child with the most popcorn in their bucket (has the highest ranking card) is the winner.

COLLECT all cards and REPEAT.
