KID CONNECT

WHAT IS KID CONNECT?
Kid Connect is all about eGROUP CONNECTIONS: for you to make connections with the kids and for the kids to make connections with each other. Activities are listed in the order they are to be completed. It’s okay if you don’t complete all the activities – some activities will work better for your group than others. Begin Kid Connect when doors open. KID CONNECT ENDS WHEN THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS.

Words in italics, whether on lessons or in handouts, are meant to be said out loud to your group.  Anything not in italics is an instruction that does not necessarily need to be read aloud.

THE ROYAL BREAKFAST BUFFET
COLORING ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
placemat (1 per child), breakfast buffet board, breakfast buffet cards (8 of each color), breakfast die, royal stickers, crayons

NOTE: Before the activity, make sure all breakfast buffet cards are attached to the breakfast buffet board.

WELCOME children to your group. Let them know how happy you are they are in Quest and how much fun we are going to have today!

SAY: Today we are going on a royal adventure to hear a story about a brave and bold knight and a daring donkey! To make sure we are ready for our adventure, we have to start the day with a delicious royal breakfast! But before we can eat a royal breakfast, we have to get our plates ready.

PLACE crayons in the center of the circle and LET each child CHOOSE a placemat. INSTRUCT children to color the placemat.

AFTER children have colored a placemat, GIVE one child the breakfast die. HOLD UP the breakfast buffet board and EXPLAIN children will ROLL the breakfast die to COLLECT breakfast buffet cards for their plate. Children can only collect one color card from each category: bread, cheese, and fruit.

CHOOSE one child to ROLL the breakfast die then ADD a breakfast buffet card to his or her placemat. CONTINUE until one child has collected one breakfast buffet card from each category. SAY: Great job, prince/princess [INSERT child’s name]! You have earned a royal sticker! 

ALLOW the child to CHOOSE a royal sticker. PLACE the royal sticker on the placemat or the child’s shirt; stickers should not be placed on faces, arms, legs, or name tags.

KID CONNECT

JOUSTING PRACTICE
GAME ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME

SAY: To make sure we are in shape and always ready when the Queen calls us, we need to practice jousting! EXPLAIN jousting was a competition between two knights on horseback. The first knight to knock the other knight off their opponents horse would win the joust.

Have children STAND in a circle and SPREAD OUT so there is room between each child. PRACTICE the four jousting moves:

  • Single Sword Swipe: swipe one arm down across body
  • Double Sword Swipe: swipe both arms down to form an “X”
  • Shield Block: hold both arms up to block head
  • Duck: squat down while ducking head

The jousting knight (the eGroup leader for the first game) will PLACE the knight helmet on his or her head. CALL OUT and MODEL jousting moves, starting slowly at first and then increasing speed. The child who completes the move last is out and sits in the horse barn (center of the circle).

CONTINUE until one child remains. This child is the next jousting knight. GIVE the jousting knight the knight’s helmet to wear. ENCOURAGE the jousting knight to perform moves and ALLOW the group to complete the moves. HELP determine who completed the move last and ASK the child to sit in the horse barn.

AFTER each round, GIVE a royal sticker to the child who was the last one in the game.

KID CONNECT

DON’T FEED THE DRAGON
GAME ACTIVITY

SUPPLIES
Don’t Feed the Dragon game kit (2 dragon dice, 36 tokens), Daelyn the Dragon mat

GIVE each child three fires (tokens) and HOLD UP the Daelyn the Dragon mat. EXPLAIN Daelyn the Dragon is very hungry and wants to blow out all the fires! LAY the Daelyn the Dragon mat in the center of the circle.

EXPLAIN children will take turns rolling the dice and completing the action on the dice, but remember, we don’t want Daelyn to blow out all the fires! The last player with fires wins. REVIEW the dice actions:

CHOOSE one child to go first. The child will roll the die and complete the action.

Children with only one fire left may only roll one die. Children with no fires left are not out of the game. They pass on their turn until they earn fires back.

CONTINUE until only one child has fires.

THE KNIGHTING CEREMONY

INTRODUCE the series using the series overview:

A long long time ago in a land far away there lived a Queen who loved to tell stories: stories of brave and bold knights, daring donkey’s, and princes and princesses. We’ll hear the Queen share one of her favorite stories about Sir Pogo’s adventure to find the armor of God. Each week we’ll learn how the armor of God can help us stand firm and grow stronger in our faith.

SAY: Before any prince or princess can head to castle, they first need to be knighted!

GIVE one child the knight’s helmet to place on his or her head and the die. ENCOURAGE the child to ROLL the die. Have the child KNEEL and PLACE the sword on the child’s shoulder; alternate touching each shoulder with the sword the number of times ROLLED on the die. Have the child REPEAT the oath after you:

I am knight (insert child’s name) (allow child to repeat)
of the Quest order. 
(allow child to repeat)
I will serve faithfully. (allow child to repeat)
I will share boldly. (allow child to repeat)
I will grow stronger (allow child to repeat)
everyday in my faith. (allow child to repeat)

CONTINUE for each child. AFTER all children are introduced, PASS out a Quest animal sticker to each child. Have each child place it next to their name tag.

SAY: We are the (insert animal name) today! There are two very special rules to remember so we can have fun in the castle. The rules to follow are:

  1. Be Safe – How can we be safe? (keeping our hands to ourselves, sitting when others are sitting, walking instead of running, following the rules)
  2. Be Kind – How can we be kind? (listening when others are talking, sharing, obeying leaders, sitting on our bottoms so others can see)

SAY: If you can obey our special rules and are ready to have fun then put one hand in the center and repeat after me:

Be kind and safe! (allow response)
On the count of three everyone, say ‘Go (insert animal name)!’

BIBLE CONNECT

WHAT IS BIBLE CONNECT?

Bible Connect is all about BIBLE CONNECTIONS: for kids to make connections with the Bible and learn to love the Bible! Children will make connections to the Bible in two ways: by hearing and talking about the Bible story and practicing the memory verse. Begin Bible Connect after the Get To Know You activity. AFTER BIBLE CONNECT CHILDREN HEAD TO FREE PLAY AND LARGE GROUP.

BIBLE STORY

The Beginner’s Bible, sword

TELL the children we can find stories about Jesus in God’s book, the Bible!

SHOW and READ the Bible Story on page 194-200 from The Beginner’s Bible.

ASK and SAY the following to review the Bible story. EXPLAIN to answer a question, a child must be HOLDING the sword. USE the sword to CALL on children to answer. Only the child HOLDING the sword can answer the question.

  1. Who spoke to King Solomon in a dream? (God)
  2. God told King Solomon he could ask for anything he wanted. Did Solomon ask for gold and riches or wisdom to know the difference between right and wrong? (wisdom)
  3. King Solomon asked to be a good king. Did this make God happy or sad? (happy)
  4. God made King Solomon the wisest person ever! Did people visit King Solomon to learn from him? (yes)
  5. King Solomon also built a temple to God. Were the people happy to have a new place to worship God? (yes)

SAY: King Solomon needed God to help him be a good king and make wise decisions. King Solomon asked God for wisdom to make right choices. You can ask God for anything you need, too. When we pray to God and trust Him we grow stronger in our faith! Repeat our main point after me:

THE QUEEN’S TREASURE
MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY

coins (13), treasure chest

SAY: During our time with the Queen we are learning a verse about the armor of God. It says:

Finally, let the Lord (point up)
make you strong. (make muscles)

can remain strong (cup hands around mouth and repeat ‘strong’ three times)

SAY: Knowing this verse helps us remember how the armor of God can help us stand firm and grow stronger in our faith!

Practice the memory verse a few times.

PLACE the coins (one more than the number of children in your eGroup) in the treasure chest in the center of the group. When you SAY: Protect the Queen’s treasure! each child will race to GRAB a coin. Once all children have a coin, PULL the remaining coin from the treasure chest. HOLD UP the coin and SAY: Princes and princesses with a [insert coin color] coin stand up! These children will REPEAT the memory verse after you.

Have children SIT DOWN and all children will RETURN the coins to the treasure chest. REPEAT a few rounds until all children have recited the memory verse.

EXPLAIN to the group children can recite the verse the last weekend of the series, during the Royal Ball, to receive their own storybook from the Queen!

NOTE: Children may ask you questions about the devil. We want to answer any questions while not scaring children, explaining the devil using age appropriate terms. If you feel uncomfortable talking to children about the devil, ask your eTeam Leader for assistance. Here are some talking points to use:

  • The devil is the enemy of God.
  • The devil didn’t want to obey God, only himself.
  • The devil thought he was better than God.
  • The devil doesn’t like when we follow Jesus. (worship Jesus, come to church, pray, share Jesus with others)
  • God is more powerful and stronger than the devil! God has ultimate control.
  • The devil wants us to do wrongs things. When we are tempted to do wrong/bad things, we can ask God /Jesus to help us to what’s right.

WHAT [GLOVE] AM I?
APPLICATION ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME

glove cards (2 sets per eG), leader sheet

SAY: What piece of armor did Sir Pogo and Darrin the Daring Donkey receive today? ALLOW children to respond. (glove of piece) They received a glove of peace, but only one glove. Do you think they’ll find the glove on their next adventure? 

PLACE the glove cards, picture side up, in the center of the circle. USE two sets of cards if you have a group larger than 10 children.

USE the leader sheet to READ statements about one of the glove cards. When children think they know what glove is being described, ENCOURAGE them to RAISE only one hand, like they are wearing the one glove of peace Sir Pogo received. CALL on one child and ASK: What glove am I describing?

READ and DISCUSS the situation on the back of the glove card. USE the leader sheet and READ statements about another glove card. CONTINUE until all glove cards have been DISCUSSED.

SAY: Sometimes, our parents give us the things we need, like food, or clothes, or a place to sleep. But there are lots of things we can ask God for. Instead of panicking like Sir Pogo did when the supplies were lost, we can pray to God instead!

SAY: Let’s REMEMBER … who was our Bible story about today? (King Solomon) Let’s THINK … what did King Solomon ask God to help him with? (being king) Yes! King Solomon needed help to make wise decisions and lead all the people. If you can FOLLOW King Solomon’s example and ask God for what you need, let’s say our main point together:

YOU CONNECT

CANNONBALLS IN THE CASTLE
SNACK ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
7-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
castle game boards (1 per child), die, cannonball cards, individually packaged cheese balls (1 per child), wet wipes

SAY: To be a brave and bold knight for the Queen, you have to protect the castle! EXPLAIN the Queen’s castle is being attacked by cannonballs and the knights must do their best to protect it!

HOLD UP a castle board and EXPLAIN the castle has different sections. SAY: Some sections are just a color and other sections have a color and a number. HELP children become familiar with the castle game board. GIVE each child a castle game board  and CALL OUT different combinations of colors and/or numbers for children to point to on their board. (NOTE: There are four different boards children can choose from.)

EXPLAIN for each cannonball attack, the eGroup leader will ROLL the die and FLIP OVER a cannonball card:

DIE COLOR: Determines where the castle is hit with a cannonball.
CANNONBALL CARD: Determines who the card effects.

Children will COMPLETE an action based on the cannonball attack.

GIVE each child a bag of cannonballs and BEGIN the game. PLAY for five to 10 rounds. (one round = rolling the die and flipping over a cannonball card)

AFTER five to 10 rounds, have children COUNT the number of cannonballs on their castle. CELEBRATE the child with the least number of cannonballs.

SAY: Great job job protecting your castle brave knights! Sir Pogo is a brave knight and he received the glove of prayer today. Let’s pray to Jesus right now and thank Him for today and our snack. ENCOURAGE children to BOW their heads, CLOSE their eyes, and REPEAT after you:

with our friends.
Help us remember
to pray to You
when there are things we need.
Thank You for our snack.

YOU CONNECT

HALL OF KNIGHTS
COLLECTIBLE ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME

Hall of Knights poster, knights (1 per child), die, glue stick, Sharpie marker

HOLD UP the Hall of Knights poster and SAY: Each weekend you visit the Queen’s castle you can collect another knight to add to the Hall of Knights. These knights will help remind us about God’s armor! Collect four knights and bring your poster back to Quest to receive a prize from the Queen’s Treasure Chest!

EXPLAIN children who have not received a Hall of Knights poster will receive one when they leave.

To receive today’s knight, children will have a knight’s dice dual with each other! EXPLAIN two children will ROLL the dice and the child whose die has the bigger number will earn a knight. CHOOSE two children and give one die to each child.

SAY: The people came from near and far, to see which (prince/princess/prince or princess) would win it all. Take the die and let it roll from your hand. Who has the biggest number in the land?

When you SAY: “let it roll from your hand.” ENCOURAGE children to ROLL the dice.

LOOK and see who rolled the bigger number. SAY: You won the knight’s dice dual! Here is your knight. GIVE the child a knight.

COLLECT the dice and REPEAT with two more children. CONTINUE until all children have received a knight.

SAY: What was the piece of armor we learned about today? ALLOW children to respond. SAY: Yes, it was the shield. Point to the shield on your knight. ENCOURAGE children to point to the highlighted shield.

SAY: Take your Hall of Knights poster home and hang it in a place you can see it everyday to help you. remember what we learn in Quest and to spend time with Jesus. Today we learned we can trust God to take care of us all the time! Let’s say our main point together:

VIP’s AND CHILDREN WHO HAVE NOT RECEIVED A HALL OF KNIGHTS POSTER:  GIVE the child a Hall of Knights poster and GLUE the knight on their Hall of Knights poster. WRITE the child’s name on the back of the Hall of Knights poster with the Sharpie marker.

SAY: We’ve had a great royal adventure today, princes and princesses! Today’s adventure is almost over at the castle, but the Queen has one more story for you from her Storybook.This story is called Goodnight Knight. Make sure to pay special attention to the pictures – things are hiding in the castle!

READ Goodnight Knight. While you read, ENCOURAGE children to look for special items hidden in the book.

AFTER you finish, CALL OUT an object for the group to find in the book. TURN the pages one at a time until the item is found. CALL OUT another object for children to find.
