BIG COLORING PAGE COLLECTION

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: crayons, coloring page set (12 pages)

What you do: Place the crayons in the center of the circle and give each child a page from the coloring page set. Explain that after they color, children will put all the pieces from the set together to form one picture that is SO BIG!

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: As children color, get to know them by asking questions about their week or what they did or are planning to do that day.

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Encourage children to help you as you arrange the pages children colored with any unused coloring pages from the set to form one large picture. Keep the large picture assembled as it will be used in the next activity.

I SPY

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: coloring sheets from previous activity, large pointer

What you say: “This picture is SO BIG! There are some smaller things hidden in our big picture. Let’s see if you can find them with our big pointer!”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Explain children will search the puzzle to find the hidden objects one at a time. Each child will have a turn to hold the pointer and use it to show the rest of the group where the hidden object can be found. Once one child has found an object, encourage them to pass the pointer to the next child in the circle. When there is more than one of the same object, a child should point out just one object and then pass the pointer to another child. Continue until all objects have been found.

What you say: “All right, let’s see if you can find…”

  • “One Earth!”
  • “Two rockets!”
  • “Three astronauts!”
  • “Four comets!”
  • “Five stars!”

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Set the coloring pages aside until the end of the worship experience. Children may take home the part of the picture they colored. Any leftover pages should be discarded.

OLLIE SAYS

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: no supplies

What you do: Spread children out around the eGroup space. Explain children will follow your instructions anytime you start them with “Ollie says,” but if you don’t say it, they should freeze. If a child follows the instruction when you haven’t said, “Ollie says,” he or she will sit down for the next two instructions.

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you say:

  • “Ollie says to reach high like you’re trying to touch the top of a BIG building”
  • “Ollie says to pretend like you’re crawling through a SMALL cave.”
  • “Ollie says to jump like you’re trying to jump over a BIG rock.”

Get to Know You

BIGGEST TO SMALLEST

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: Quest animal cards

What you do: Shuffle the Quest animal cards and spread them around the center of the eGroup.

What you say: “This month we’re learning Jesus loves each of us in a big, BIG way! As we get to know each other today, we’ll talk about some of the biggest things we’ve seen or made and also some of the things we really love.”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Explain that after each child introduces themselves, they will find the card in the center of the eGroup with the biggest Quest animal on it. The child should answer the question on the back of the card. Place that card outside of the circle and continue by encouraging the next child to introduce themselves and find the card with the biggest Quest animal remaining in the circle. Continue until all children have been introduced.

After all children are introduced, pass out a Quest animal sticker to each child. Have each child place it next to their name tag.

What you say: “We are the (insert animal name) today! There are two very special rules to remember so we can have the most fun. The rules to follow are:

  1. Be Safe – How can we be safe? (keeping our hands to ourselves, sitting when others are sitting, walking instead of running, following the rules)
  2. Be Kind – How can we be kind? (listening when others are talking, sharing, obeying leaders, sitting on our bottoms so others can see)

If you can obey our special rules and are ready to have fun then put one hand in the center and repeat after me:

I am (allow response)

a (insert group name) (allow response)

I will (allow response)

be kind and safe! (allow response)

On the count of three everyone, say ‘Go (insert animal name)!’

1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . .

Go (insert group name)!”

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you say: “Now that we all know each other and we know the rules, we’re ready to hear a Bible story about how Jesus showed love to someone!”

  1. “Did the children love to spend time with Jesus?” (yes)
  2. “Did the disciples think the children were helping Jesus or bothering Him?” (They thought the children were bothering Him.)
  3. “Did the disciples think Jesus was too busy for the children or that He had plenty of time for them?” (They thought He was too busy.)

VERSE VOLUME

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: memory verse cards

What you say: “This month our Bible verse says Jesus’ love for us is wide and long and high and deep. Jesus’ love for us is SO BIG! Let’s practice our verse together!”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Say the memory verse and do the motions in front of the children. After showing them once, encourage children to practice the memory verse with you using different volumes. Demonstrate what volume children should use by stretching your arms wide for them to say it loudly or bringing your hands close together for them to say it quietly.

What you say: “I am going to say our memory verse. Everyone watch me! (Demonstrate the memory verse as shown in the sidebar.) Now let’s do it all together! Are you ready? (Say the memory verse with the motions.) We’re going to say it a few more times, but now you’ll have to watch my arms to see how loud to say it. When I make a BIG movement like this (stretch arms wide), you’ll say the verse in a BIG, loud voice. When I make a small movement like this (bring hands close together), you’ll say the verse in a small, quiet voice. Let’s try it!” (Lead children in saying the verse several times at different volumes.)

What you say: “Our memory verse tells us that Jesus loves us SO much that it cannot be measured! WOW! He loves us A LOT!”

What you do: Explain to the group children can recite the verse each week to earn a memory verse card for their collectible poster! Allow children an opportunity to recite the verse by themselves. Give any child who recites the verse by themselves a memory verse card. Mark the “MV” box by that child’s name on your check-in sheet.

BEFORE THE ACTIVITY

What you need: activity sheets, candy hearts (1 bag per child), leader sheet

What you do: Give each child an activity sheet and a bag of candy hearts. Help children open their candy as needed, but remind them not to eat the candy yet because they will need to use it to participate in the activity.

What you say: “Let’s see if you can find the hearts on this picture while we talk about how much Jesus loves you!”

DURING THE ACTIVITY

What you do: Ask children to raise their hand if they can find a heart hidden in the picture. Each time a heart is found, encourage all children to place a candy heart over the heart on the picture. If the heart is one of the hearts shown on the leader sheet, read the instructions from the leader sheet and encourage children to respond as directed. If the heart is not one of the hearts shown on the leader sheet, ask children the key question, “Who loves you?” (Jesus loves me.) Repeat until all six hearts picture on the leader sheet have been found.

If time allows, try to find all 11 hearts!

AFTER THE ACTIVITY

What you say: “In our Bible story today, did Jesus send the children away? (Pause) No! He said: “Let the little children come to me”. “He wanted to spend time with them because He loved them. And He loves you, too! He loves you on the playground, He loves you when you’re at school, He loves you at home, and He loves you when you’re at church. Jesus loves you always, no matter where you go or what you do. Who loves you?” (Jesus loves me.)

I also want each of you to share the name of someone else Jesus loves. Then we’ll thank Jesus for loving all of us!” (Write down children’s names and what they say.)

(Demonstrate) [Child’s name] will then pick someone to be ‘it’ and say ‘YOU’ when he/she touches that child’s head. If you are picked, then get up and walk fast to try to touch [child’s name] before he/she sits down in your spot. Are you ready?”

What you do: Encourage the child who is ‘it’ to walk around the circle and touch each child’s head while saying, “Loves, loves, loves . . .” When the child picks a child to be the next ‘it’, he/she will say, “YOU,” and start walking fast around the circle.
