ENGAGE is a time to welcome kids to your eGroup with a fun activity to help them feel comfortable and get to know each other.

WHAT YOU NEED: Celebration buttons, Sharpie marker, instruction card, Ugly Christmas Vest paper strips, Ugly Christmas Vest decorations, packaging tape, Headbowz game cards (2 sets), prize pins

  • Start by introducing yourself and welcoming kids to your eGroup.
  • As kids arrive, welcome them to Motion’s Ugly Christmas Sweater Party and give them a large celebration button. Instruct kids to write their name on the button with the Sharpie marker.
  • If kids are not wearing an ugly Christmas sweater, refer to the instruction card for details on how to help them create and wear an ugly Christmas vest.
  • If kids are already wearing an ugly Christmas sweater, ask them about their week and interests. Use the following questions to generate discussion:
  • What is your favorite thing about Christmas?
  • What’s something cool that happened this week?
  • What was the favorite part of your week?
  • Have you ________ (seen/eaten/listened to/read) any good _________ (movies/TV shows/food/music/books) lately?
  • What are you looking forward to next week?

Once you have five to six kids begin playing “Headbowz.” (Children creating Ugly Christmas Vests may continue working on those until they’re done and then join the game.)

  • Seat kids in a circle. If you have more than eight kids, split them into two groups.
  • Place the Headbowz game cards in the center of the circle with the bow facing up.
  • Tell kids they will take turns trying to guess different Christmas movies or songs by asking only yes or no questions.
  • Ask one kid to take a Headbowz card WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE OTHER SIDE and hold it in front of their forehead so the bow is facing them. Encourage the kid to ask the other kids yes or no questions to help guess what is on the card.
  • The kid may ask up to five questions before guessing what is on the card. If the guess is correct, the kid can keep the card. If the guess is wrong, the kid can give the card to the eGroup Leader to discard.
  • The kid with the most cards at the end wins! Give the winner a prize pin.

MEMORY VERSE is a time to introduce the series virtue and memory verse. Choose one of the memory verse activity options to help your kids practice the verse. After this activity, GO TO LARGE GROUP.

WHAT YOU NEED: Bibles, Bible highlighters, memory verse cards, word cards, verse mat, command card, mini bows, dry erase marker, prize pins

“Welcome to eGroup! My name is _______ and I’m your eGroup leader. I’m so excited you’re here today because we’re celebrating Christmas together at our Motion Ugly Christmas Sweater Party! Throughout eGroup today we’ll be playing different party games for chances to earn special prize pins. You can collect and wear these prize pins to make your ugly Christmas sweaters look even more awesome! We’ve already given away one prize pin; now you can compete as teams to win the next set of prize pins in our memory verse game!

This month we’re in a series called Put a Bow On It, where we’re learning about finding joy in every situation. Our Bible verse, Philippians 4:4, tells us we should rejoice always. That means finding joy all the time, no matter what’s going on in our lives. Let’s memorize this verse so we can remember to show joy all the time.”

  • Read the verse out loud: “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” Philippians 4:4
  • Help kids look up the memory verse in their Bibles. Encourage children to use the Bible highlighters to underline the verse in their Bible. Give a memory verse card to kids without a Bible.
  • Complete the memory verse activity “Put a Bow On It”.

  • Split kids into four teams.
  • Give each team a verse mat. Explain kids will compete to be the first team to get all five bows on their mat crossed off.
  • Give each team a set of word cards, face down, and tell teams to shuffle their word cards well. Once all teams are done shuffling, tell teams to turn their cards over and put them in order on the verse mat as fast as they can.
  • Cross off two bows on the fastest team’s verse mat with the Expo marker.
  • Read the instructions on the command card one at a time, encouraging kids to put a bow on the word you describe. Cross off one bow on their verse mat each time a team finishes the task first.
  • The first team to get all five bows crossed off wins! Give each kid on the winning team a prize pin.

WHAT YOU NEED: Bible, Pass Word cards, medium bow, Bible story sheet, prize pin

  • Have kids sit in a circle with their Bibles and instruct kids to turn to Luke 2. NOTE: This may take time, but it helps kids learn skills for reading the Bible on their own. If needed, encourage kids to use the table of contents in their Bible and then decide if the book is in the Old or New Testament.
  • Tell kids we will pay attention to important words in the Bible story by passing the bow to someone else each time one of the Pass Words is read. Remind kids that this is one of our party games today, so the winner will get a prize pin at the end!
  • Spread out the Pass Word cards. Read each of the words out loud and remind kids to listen for those words in the Bible story.
  • Give the bow to a kid. Tell kids whoever is holding the bow must pass it to someone else as quickly as they can as soon as they hear one of the Pass Words.
  • Read Luke 2:1-7 aloud and encourage kids to pass the bow each time one of the Pass Words is read.
  • Give a prize pin to the kid holding the bow at the end of the story.

“Mary and Joseph may have wished they could have changed some of the crazy, unexpected things that happened to them. But they were able to have joy because they could see past all of that to what really mattered: God had sent His Son!

The same goes for us. God sent Jesus to live with us and to rescue us from the pain and messiness of our own lives. And that’s always worth celebrating!”

Discussion Questions:

  • “Everyone feels sad or gets discouraged at times. Philippians 4:4 tells us to ALWAYS be joyful. When everything is going wrong, why can we still have joy?”
  • “If someone asked you what the secret to happiness is, what would you tell them?”
  • “What are some things that would completely change for you if God had never sent Jesus?”

WHAT YOU NEED: leader card, mini bows (5), blindfold, present board, Sharpie marker, prize pins

  • Divide kids into two teams and seat teams in two lines facing each other. Tell kids in this party game each kid on the winning team will win a prize pin!
  • Explain kids will listen to you read a scenario and then race to grab a bow from between their lines at your signal (“Three, two, one, bow!”). If teams can share a specific way to show joy in that scenario, they can keep the bow. Kids will use the bows at the end to play “Pin the Bow on the Present.”
  • Place a bow between the first two kids in each line. Call out “Three, two, one, bow!” and signal those two kids from each line to race to grab the bow.
  • Read a scenario from the leader card. The team who grabbed the bow first must share a specific way to show joy in that scenario. If they can immediately give a specific example, they may keep the bow. If they can’t think of one, the other team can give an example and keep the bow. After each scenario, use the Sharpie marker to mark bows with a “1” or a “2” to designate which team earned the bow.
  • Repeat by placing a bow between the next two kids from each line and giving the same signal, then read the scenario and encourage the team who grabbed the bow to respond.
  • Once all five bows have been earned, teams will take turns competing to pin the bow on the present.
  • Encourage teams to choose one player for each of their bows who will try to pin the bow on the present. Stand a kid who isn’t pinning a bow at the far end of the eGroup space and give the kid the present board to hold.
  • One at a time, blindfold one of the kids holding a bow and send them to pin the bow on the present board.
  • After all five bows have been pinned on the present board, total the points each team earned according to where their bows were pinned on the board. The team with the most points wins! Give each kid on the winning team a prize pin.

“Even during the Christmas season, one of the most fun times of the year, things can come up that try to rob us of our joy. But our joy doesn’t depend on things or people. We have joy because of Jesus and the love He has for us! Because God sent His Son, I can choose joy, no matter what!”

Spend time in PRAYER with your eGroup before beginning the GAME ACTIVITY.

WHAT YOU NEED: eKidz Prayer Journal, pens, Bingo boards, Bingo chips, activity cards

“Today we learned we can have joy because God sent His Son. When you choose joy no matter what you face, you can see God do great things through you! Before we head to Large Group for the rest of our party, I want you to think about a specific reason you’re thankful for Jesus. I’m going to write your name and the reason you share in our eKidz Prayer Journal so we can thank God along with you and so I can continue praying for you throughout the week.”

Write down what kids share in your eKidz Prayer Journal. Take your eKidz Prayer Journal home with you and pray for your kids throughout the week.

“God, thanks for always giving us reasons to find joy. More than anything, we’re thankful You sent Your Son to Earth to save us. We’re thankful for Jesus because (read reasons kids shared from your eKidz Prayer Journal). We love You. Thank You for loving us. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.”

“Choosing joy is part of showing your Christmas spirit! But sometimes all the craziness that comes with Christmas can bring out our grumpy side. Let’s see if you’ve ever experienced some of these joy-killing Christmas No-No’s!”

  • Give each kid a Bingo board and put the Bingo chips where kids can take them as they need them.
  • Tell kids to call out “Bingo” when they have covered five spaces in a row.
  • Instruct kids to put a Bingo chip over the free space in the middle of the board.
  • Read the activity cards one at a time and encourage kids to put a Bingo chip on their board when applicable. Discuss ways kids could have chosen a more joyful attitude each time a child puts a chip on their board.

The BRING IT! CHALLENGE is completed during Large Group.

WHAT YOU NEED: Bring It! Challenge tracking sheet, Bring It! Challenge stickers

“In Motion we want you to Bring It! to church each weekend! The Bring It! Challenge encourages you to bring yourself, your Bible, your friends, and scripture you’ve learned to Motion. Not only can you be rewarded for bringing it, but the Bring It! Challenge is a fun way to grow and learn more about God and how He wants us to live.

During Put a Bow On It, you can earn fun prizes each week that will remind you to have fun and savor the joy of the Christmas season! All you have to do is show me Philippians 4:4 in your Bible AND recite it from memory!”

  • Encourage kids to show you Philippians 4:4 in the Bible AND recite the verse from memory. Kids must do both to earn a prize.
  • Give any kids who complete the challenge a Bring It! Challenge sticker and tell them the sticker will allow them to choose a prize as they are dismissed at the end of the experience.
  • On the Bring It! Challenge tracking sheet, record the number of kids who recited the memory verse and/or brought a Bible. Give this sheet to your eTeam Leader at the end of the worship experience.
