Bible Story

Luke 1:5-25, 57-79

Welcome / Intro

“Welcome to Motion where we’re celebrating Christmas all month long in our series called Put A Bow On It. This month we’re learning all about joy which is finding a way to be happy even when things don’t go your way. Throughout this series we’re going to help you learn to have joy even when you get socks for Christmas instead of that Nerf Bazooka you’ve been asking for. We’ve got a special guest to help us learn what joy is, so take a look at the screen!”

Connect Questions / Dismissal to eGroups

“Zechariah and Elizabeth were way past the point where they could have children, but God did the impossible and gave their family a beautiful baby boy named John who would end up preparing people for the arrival of Jesus.

That brings us to today’s main point. Say it with me:

I can have joy because anything is possible with God.

(Refer to the main point slide on the screen and have kids say the main point with you. Have them repeat it if necessary.)

Now Motion, it’s time for us to circle around our eGroup leaders to answer a few questions. Do that now.

(give kids time to circle around eGroup leaders)

First question: What impossible thing did God do for Zechariah and Elizabeth? Why did that seem so impossible? Discuss that now.

(give kids two minutes to answer the question)

Second question: Have you ever seen God do something impossible in you or the lives of your family members? Discuss that now.

(give kids two minutes to answer the question)

Now Motion, our final question is our ‘See What God Can Do Through You’ question which is all about how you can use today’s Bible story to show God’s love to the people around you. Today’s question is: Next time a friend faces something impossible, how can you encourage them? Discuss that question now.”

(give kids two minutes to answer the question)

Worship Intro

“Great job, everybody! I heard some incredible answers coming from your eGroups today.

During our Christmas series, we have the opportunity to sing some awesome music that tells the story of Jesus’ birth. Stand to your feet and let’s sing ‘Noel!’”

Worship Song – Noel

Dismissal To eGroups

“Great job, Motion! Everybody stay standing because it’s time for us to head back to our eGroups. When I call your eGroup leaders’ name, you can stand up and follow them back.”

(dismiss kids back to eGroups)

VIP Welcome

“Welcome back from your eGroups! Before we dive back in to Fear Inc., let’s take a moment and welcome a special group of people who are here for the first time today. Motion, help me welcome our VIPs!

(initiate applause)

If it’s your first time here, we consider you a VIP – a very important person! VIPs, turn your attention to the screen because I’ve got some special instructions just for you.

(refer to the screen)

This is a VIP lanyard. If you’re a VIP, you’re wearing this around your neck right now.

[VIP Slide – Lanyard]

When you leave Motion, you need to take that lanyard to the orange tent called the Welcome Area.

[VIP Slide – Welcome Area]

Once you get to the Welcome Area, show them your lanyard and they will give you a gift!

[VIP Slide – Gift]

Let’s review.

[VIP Slide – All Combined]

VIP Lanyard + Welcome Area = Gift.”

Bring It! Challenge Setup

“Speaking of ways to earn things, you’ve got the chance to earn prizes for saying our memory verse, Philippians 4:4 and finding the verse in your Bible in our Bring It! Challenge! Right now you can circle around your eGroup leaders and, if you know your memory verse and brought your Bible, you can earn some cool prizes. Do that now!”

Game Setup – The Ugliest Sweater

“Motion, next week is our Ugly Christmas Sweater party and today we’ve got an awesome game that will give you some good ideas on what you can wear next week. I’m gong to give each game group a bag filled with all kinds of ugly Christmas costume pieces and a plain white sweater. Game groups will decorate the sweater with the items shown on the screen and then the eGroup leader or Motion volunteer in each game group will have to put on the sweater and any other costume pieces shown on the screen and come find me.

The first person to reach me wearing the correct outfit wins the round and earns the point for their team. The team that earns the most points wins today’s Ugly Christmas Sweater game.

Before we begin, I need to go over a few details: each game group needs to have an eGroup leader or volunteer who will be the one actually wearing the sweater after it is decorated. So that means eGroup leaders, eGroup supports, and any extra theater volunteers will need to help our kids play this game. Lastly, some of these items like stickers or Christmas bows will need to be reused each round, so make sure you’re keeping track of any stickers or bows.

Everyone form into game groups and lets start passing out the Ugly Christmas sweater bags to our game groups!”

(help kids form into game groups – groups of ten – and make sure each game group has a volunteer assigned to them to help play the game)

Ugly Sweater Promo

“Incredible job today, Motion! Remember, next week we’re having our first ever Ugly Christmas Sweater party! We’re inviting you and your friends to come to Motion dressed in your goofiest, craziest, or ugliest Christmas outfits, just like you may have made in today’s game. If you’re sitting there saying ‘But I don’t have anything to wear!’ then don’t worry! We’re sending you home with invitations to our party as well as instructions on how you can design your own awful looking Christmas sweater for our big party. On the way out the door, you’ll receive this handout explaining all about our Ugly Christmas Sweater party along with some helpful advice on how to create an outfit so ugly even The Grinch wouldn’t wear it.”
