Welcome / Intro

“Welcome to Motion and welcome to the week before Christmas! I can’t believe it’s almost time to celebrate the biggest holiday of the year! In fact, you could say that I’m filled with joy as I’m getting ready to spend time with family and friends next week. Throughout our Christmas series called ‘Put A Bow On It,’ we’ve been learning how to have joy no matter what. Take a look at the screen and help me say the definition of joy:

Finding a way to be happy even when things don’t go your way.

So that means we can be happy when we get stuck eating another fruitcake instead of that delicious chocolate peanut butter pie that grandma makes.

One way we can bring joy into our hearts is to remember the story of how God brought his son, Jesus, to Earth as a tiny baby in a town called Bethlehem. Motion, take a look at the screen as we learn more about this story!”

Connect Questions / Dismissal to eGroups

“The journey to Jesus’ birth wasn’t easy for Mary and Joseph. They faced some difficulties, but even when things weren’t going their way they still experienced joy, because they knew the Son of God would be with them soon. And that’s exactly what today’s main point is all about. Say it with me:

I can have joy because God sent His Son.

(Refer to the main point slide on the screen and have kids say the main point with you. Have them repeat it if necessary.)

Now Motion, it’s time for us to circle around our eGroup leaders to answer a few questions. Do that now.

(give kids time to circle around eGroup leaders)

First question: What made the journey to Bethlehem so difficult for Mary and Joseph? Discuss that now.

(give kids two minutes to answer the question)

Second question: When was the last time you did something difficult? Discuss that now.

(give kids two minutes to answer the question)

Now Motion, our final question is our ‘See What God Can Do Through You’ question which is all about how you can use today’s Bible story to show God’s love to the people around you. Today’s question is: Next time a friends going through something difficult, how can you encourage them to have joy? Discuss that question now.”

(give kids two minutes to answer the question)

Game Setup – T’was The Motion Before Christmas

“Now Motion, today has been our ugly sweater party and there’s no better way to end a party like this than to give you even more decorations for your hideous holiday outfit. I’ve got a special surprise for the winners of today’s game in the form of a one of a kind Motion button with my dear friend Dr. Oldman on it. Take a look at how cool this thing is!

(show kids one of the Dr. Oldman buttons)

This button can be yours, but only if you’re one of the ones to win today’s game. Here’s how you play.

In just a moment you’ll form a group of ten friends called a game group and sit in a circle on the floor. Each kid in your game group will receive a colored button like you might find on a jacket or shirt. I’ll stand on the stage and read a story called T’was the Motion Before Christmas and throughout the story you’ll hear directions on wether to pass the button in your hand to the LEFT or to the RIGHT. When you hear the command, pass your button in the direction I tell you. After the poem ends, the kids holding a specific color I call out will win today’s prize.

Everyone find a game group and form a circle on the floor and let’s get ready to play ’T’was The Motion Before Christmas!’”

(read the poem to the kids emphasizing he LEFT and RIGHT directions)

Alright, everybody stop passing your buttons because the winner of today’s game is everyone who has a WHITE button! If you’ve got a WHITE button stand up and hold your button above your head because I’ve got a prize just for you.

(hand out candy prize to kids with WHITE buttons)

That’s right kids with WHITE buttons, you’ll get a nice bonus surprise, but you didn’t actually think I’d let something as cool as a Dr. Oldman button go to only a few kids, did you? That’s because today every kid in here is going to get an awesome Dr. Oldman button! Let’s pass those out right now and you can go ahead and put those on your ugly sweaters!

(pass out Dr. Oldman buttons)
