…You and Your Household

In Acts 16:16-40 there is a really cool conversion story that involves a Jailer and his family.  Up until recently I always had a little problem with the story!

Paul and Silas are singing in prison. The Jailer wakes up and sees the doors have burst open. He thinks Paul and Silas have escaped and tries to kill himself.  Paul stops him. The Jailer says, “What must I do to be saved?” and then verse 31 & 32: “They replied, ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved – you and your whole householdTHEN they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house.”

WHAT?!?!  Paul’s being a little presumptuous don’t you think? Can Paul tell a man that when he hears the Gospel his whole household will believe too?

Perhaps Paul understands something about the way God works through our relationships. Paul knew that when the Jailor believed his family would too because they knew him best! The reality is: the people who know us best are impressed with us the least BUT are impressed by us the most!

The bad news is you can’t fake it around your family – they know you too well! If you hold on to your stubborn, arrogant, I-can-do-it-all-by-myself attitude, dad, guess what?  Your family takes note.  The people who know you the best are impressed with you the least…don’t be surprised when you start to see your kids relying more on themselves then God.

The good news is you can’t fake it around your family.  When you have a true conversion experience (like this jailer) they take note!  And because the people who know you the best are impressed by you the most God can use the change He makes in you to affect change in them.

You want your kids to be generous let them see you give freely.

You want your kid to quit throwing fits get your own anger under control.

You want your kids to treat their mom with respect…well!

The powerful truth in this passage of Scripture is that if you truly change it could be a You and Your Household conversion!

So from one imperfect parent to another – let’s commit to changing ourselves to be more like Christ and trust that the people who know us best will be impressed BY US the most!
