WEEK 1: FEBRUARY 6/7
The 10 Commandments
WEEK 1 FOCUS
You shall have no other gods before me. (20:3)
You shall not make for yourself an image … or worship them. (20:4)
You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. (20:7)
Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. (20:8)
WEEK 2 FOCUS
5. Honor your father and mother. (20:12)6. You shall not murder. (20:13)
7. You shall not commit adultery. (20:14)
WEEK 3 FOCUS
8. You shall not steal. (20:15)
9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. (20:16)
10. You shall not covet … anything that belongs to your neighbor. (20:17)
Engage is a time to welcome kids to your eGroup with a fun activity to help them feel comfortable and get to know each other.
DO: Start by introducing yourself and welcoming kids to the eGroup. Ask them about their week and interests. Once you have five to six kids begin the Engage activity.
PHASE 10: MOVE IT!
PHASE 10 DECK OF CARDS
NOTE: Before playing the game, pull out the cards listed below. Set aside the remaining cards; they will not be used for Move It!
All blue cards numbered one through five (there will be two of each number).
All red cards numbered one through five (there will be two of each number).
eight WILD cards and four SKIP cards
Divide the eGroup into two teams: the red team and the blue team. As kids join your eGroup, assign them to the red or blue team. Have teams face each other.
Have each team select a “RULER.” The RULER will choose a movement for the other team to complete each time a WILD card is drawn. OPTIONAL: A new RULER can be assigned each time a WILD card is drawn.
Shuffle the blue, red, WILD, and SKIP cards. Place the cards facedown in the center of the teams.
Flip over the top card on the pile.
If a red card is drawn, the red team must complete the corresponding movement from below. If a blue card is drawn, the blue team must complete the corresponding movement from below. The team must continue the movement until a new card of their color is drawn.
“1” CARD: jumping jacks
“2” CARD: stand on only your right leg
“3” CARD: spin around
“4” CARD: pat your head while rubbing your stomach
“5” CARD: BOTH teams must skip from one side of the room to the other
WILD CARD: The ruler gets to pick a movement for the other team to complete.
After the team has completed the movement, the team collects the card.
If a team chooses a SKIP card, the team collects all of the other team’s cards.
Continue until no cards remain in the pile. Have each team add up the numbers on their cards. WILD and SKIP cards do not count for points. The team with the highest point value wins!

MEMORY VERSE | THE 10 COMMANDMENTS
During this time introduce your eGroup kids to the memory verse. Spend time teaching and practicing the 10 commandments.
COMMANDMENT POSTERS (10)
SAY: “Welcome to eGroup! My name is _______ and I’m your eGroup leader! As an eGroup we will hang out together during Motion, hear stories from the Bible, learn what it means to live for Jesus, and play games!
This week we begin a new series called Motion Presents: Superbook! We’ll check in with our Superbook friends and learn about God’s rules for His people. Everyone has rules they’ve been given to follow. Rules from parents, teachers, coaches, or even the government! But did you know the most important rules come from God? God created a list of 10 rules for His people to follow called the 10 commandments.
God gave these rules to the Israelites thousands of years ago. But they weren’t just for the Israelites; those rules still apply to you and me today! The 10 commandments are found in Exodus 20. During this series we are going to learn the 10 commandments to help us know how God wants us to live our lives.”
Arrange the 10 Commandment posters around the eGroup space. Read each poster out loud, including the commandment and the explanation.
Practice the 10 commandments with kids. You can use the following methods to help kids learn the memory verse:
REPEAT AFTER ME: Have kids repeat the words after you.
PAIR UP: After practicing the commandments as a group, have kids pair up to practice the verse.
MOTIONS: Come up with motions to help remember the commandments as a group. Practice it together.
FIND IT FIRST: Mix up the order of the Commandment posters. Call out a commandment number and have kids race to see who can find it first.
CONNECT ACTIVITY: Kids will connect God’s rules with the Superbook: The Ten Commandments episode and connect with each other.
SAY: “Wow! What an adventure! While camping at Pine Mountain State Park, our Superbook friends went hiking, but ended up traveling back in time to learn some valuable lessons.Have any of you ever gone on an overnight camping trip? (Allow response.) If so, I bet you had some camping rules to follow just like our friends in Superbook.”
Give each kid a pen and notecard.
Review the three campground rules: no exploring in caves, no swimming in waterfalls, and no hiking off the trails.
Have kids draw a waterfall, hiking trail, or cave on their notecard. Have kids find who drew the same rule as them and sit together in a circle.
Once kids are sitting together have them introduce themselves to their group.
Ask the following questions and have kids discuss in their groups. Share answers from different groups after each question.
What do you think is the purpose of the camp rules? (To keep campers safe.)
If you could only follow one of the camp rules, which would you follow and why?
The main characters, Chris and Joye, had very different reactions to the forest ranger’s rules. How did each of them react? (Chris complained and disobeyed the rules. Joye was respectful and obeyed the rules.)
We’ve all heard of or had to follow rules we didn’t like or didn’t agree with. Share one rule from home or school you don’t like. Did you react to that rule more like Chris or more like Joye?
Why do you think that rule was made? (NOTE: Encourage kids to keep their comments positive, using kind and respectful language.)
THE 10 COMMANDMENTS | EXODUS 20:1-11 [COMMANDMENTS 1-4]
BIBLE STORY AND DISCUSSION ACTIVITY: Kids will learn the first four commandments by determining if a rule is one of God’s first four commandments.
BIBLES, LEADER SHEET, PHASE 10 DECK OF CARDS (1 CARD PER KID)
SAY: “Just like we saw in Superbook, Chris and his friends weren’t the only ones given a list of rules to follow. Let’s look at the first four rules God gave the Israelites in Exodus 20.”
Have kids sit in a circle with their Bibles.
Use the leader sheet to instruct kids where to turn in their Bibles to find and read the first four commandments. NOTE: This may take time, but it helps them learn skills for reading the Bible on their own.
Give each kid one Phase 10 card. (NOTE: The type of card does not matter.) Use the leader sheet to read the Bible story. As you read the story, kids will flip over their card each time they hear one of God’s rules.
SAY: “Knowing God’s rules should affect how we live our lives. I’m going to read some situations. If you think it is a situation about one of God’s 10 rules, flip your card.”
DO: Read the rules below, one at a time. For each situation which describes one of God’s rules, have kids guess which rule is being described.
If you put a dish in the sink, wash it, dry it, and put it away.
Use one day each week to rest and worship. (Commandment 4)
Don’t look to anything or anyone but God for security, hope, or love. (Commandment 1)
Treat everyone with respect.
Look for ways to be kind and helpful to each other.
Only worship God, not other images. (Commandment 2)
Spend five days going to school and two days lying on the couch.
Use God’s name with respect. (Commandment 3)
SAY: “God’s rules help us determine right from wrong. It’s impossible for us to live the right way all the time and follow all of God’s rules perfectly. But God made a way for us to be forgiven when we sin and do something wrong. God sent Jesus to pay the price for our sins through His death on the cross. No matter what we’ve done, or will continue to do, Jesus will always forgive us – we just have to ask!”
PRAYER ACTIVITY: Prayer is an important way to share Jesus with passion. Spend time in prayer with your eGroup before beginning the game.
eKIDZ PRAYER JOURNAL, PENS
SAY: “Before we begin our last activity, let’s pray together.”
DO: Take prayer requests and write them down in your eKidz prayer journal so you can pray for your eGroup kids during the week. Encourage kids to share one or two prayer requests. Invite kids to pray with you if they want.
SUGGESTED PRAYER: “Dear God, thank You for loving us so much that You gave us Your Word to show us how to live. Your rules are good. Help us to obey them with a joyful heart when at school, home, and everywhere we go this week. We love You! In Jesus’ name, amen.”
BRING IT! CHALLENGE
OVERVIEW: During Superbook: The 10 Commandments, kids can collect gear stickers on their bookmark for bringing their Bible and reciting the commandments.
10 COMMANDMENTS BOOKMARK, MOTION GEAR STICKERS
SAY: “It’s important to learn God’s rules to help us know how God wants us to live our lives. During Motion Presents: Superbook you’ll have a chance to earn an awesome Motion prize by bringing your Bible and reciting the 10 commandments!”
Show kids the 10 Commandments bookmark. Explain one side has the 10 commandments listed to help them learn all of God’s rules and other other side has spots to earn Motion gear stickers.
Explain how to earn Motion gear stickers on the 10 Commandments bookmark.
bring your Bible = 1 Motion gear sticker
recite a commandment from memory = 1 Motion gear sticker
Hand a 10 Commandments bookmark to each kid. If kids have a Bible have them find Exodus 20 and use their bookmark to mark this spot in their Bible.
Award Motion gear sticker to kids who brought a Bible and can recite any of the 10 commandments.
SAY: “Make sure to come to Motion the next two weekends to earn more gears during Superbook! Keep your 10 Commandments bookmark in your Bible to help you learn the 10 commandments and remember to bring your Bible and bookmark back to Motion every week!”
