KID CONNECT

WHAT IS KID CONNECT?
Kid Connect is all about eGROUP CONNECTIONS: for you to make connections with the kids and for the kids to make connections with each other. Activities are listed in the order they are to be completed. It’s okay if you don’t complete all the activities – some activities will work better for your group than others. Begin Kid Connect when doors open. KID CONNECT ENDS WHEN THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS.

Words in italics, whether on lessons or in handouts, are meant to be said out loud to your group.  Anything not in italics is an instruction that does not necessarily need to be read aloud.

COLORING ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Quest coloring page, crayons, die

PLACE crayons in the center of the circle and GIVE each child a Quest coloring page. INSTRUCT children to color their coloring page. As children color, get to know them by asking questions about their week or what they did that day.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

  • Use a die to determine the crayon color the group will use. Allow children 10-30 seconds to color using the color. Roll the die again and switch crayon colors.
  • Use the number die to determine how many items to color with a certain color crayon. Allow children to color the number of items then roll the die again.

WHO TO FOLLOW

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
candy game pieces, Quest animal stickers

INTRODUCE the series using the series overview:

God gave Jesus a special job to do while He was on Earth. God told Jesus to tell everyone God loves them! Jesus chose twelve special friends and asked them to follow Him and help Him share God’s love. Jesus wants us to follow Him, too!

LAY the memory cards facedown in the center of the group. FLIP OVER two memory cards and introduce yourself. READ aloud this question, “Would you rather follow [insert animal name from one memory card] or  [insert animal name from the other memory card].” and SHARE your answer with the eGroup. TURN over the cards after sharing.

Each child will CHOOSE two memory cards and SHARE his or her name. ASK each child this question: “Would you rather follow [insert animal name from one memory card] or  [insert animal name from the other memory card]. and have the child answer the question. CONTINUE for each child.

AFTER all children are introduced, PASS out a Quest animal sticker to each child. Have each child place it next to their name tag.

SAY: We are the (insert animal name) today! There are two very special rules to remember so we can have the most fun. The rules to follow are:

  1. Be Safe – How can we be safe? (keeping our hands to ourselves, sitting when others are sitting, walking instead of running, following the rules)
  2. Be Kind – How can we be kind? (listening when others are talking, sharing, obeying leaders, sitting on our bottoms so others can see)

SAY: If you can obey our special rules and are ready to have fun then put one hand in the center and repeat after me:

I am (allow response)
a (insert group name) (allow response)
I will (allow response)
be kind and safe! (allow response)
On the count of three everyone, say ‘Go (insert animal name)!’
1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . .
Go (insert group name)!

BIBLE CONNECT

WHAT IS BIBLE CONNECT?

Bible Connect is all about BIBLE CONNECTIONS: for kids to make connections with the Bible and learn to love the Bible! Children will make connections to the Bible in two ways: by hearing and talking about the Bible story and practicing the memory verse. Begin Bible Connect after the Get To Know You activity. AFTER BIBLE CONNECT CHILDREN HEAD TO FREE PLAY AND LARGE GROUP.

JESUS AT THE TEMPLE
BIBLE STORY

SUGGESTED TIME
8 MINUTES

God’s Story For Me Bible, egg sticker

TELL the children we can find true stories about Jesus in God’s book, the Bible!

SHOW and READ the Bible Story on page 294-299 from the God’s Story For Me Bible.

ASK the following questions to review the Bible story. Each time a child answers a question, GIVE the child an egg sticker.

  1. Where did Jesus’ family travel? (The Temple in Jerusalem.)
  2. Was Jesus a child or a grown-up when they went on this trip? (a child)
  3. Who was missing from the group when they started traveling home? (Jesus)
  4. Where did Mary and Joseph find Jesus? (at the Temple)
  5. Why was Jesus still at the Temple? (He was talking to the Temple leaders about God.)

SAY: Jesus stayed at the Temple because He loved talking about God and sharing about God’s love with other people! We can be like Jesus and talk about God, too! Say our main point with me.

I can follow Jesus (march in place)
by loving God (hug self)
and others! (point out)

VERSE VOICES
MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
7 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
die, memory verse egg

SAY: This month we are learning that following Jesus and living like Him is the best choice we can make! Our new Bible verse reminds us to always follow Jesus. It says:

‘Come (spread arms wide)
and follow me,’ (march in place)
Jesus said. (cup hands around mouth)
Matthew 4:19 (open hands like a book)

PRACTICE the memory verse together a few times.

ASK a child to ROLL the die. REPEAT the verse together in the voice corresponding to the color ROLLED on the die.

EXPLAIN to the group children can recite the verse each week to earn a Memory Verse Egg for their Follow Me poster!

HEAD TO FREE PLAY, THEN LARGE GROUP.

YOU CONNECT

WHAT IS YOU CONNECT?
You Connect is about the eGroup leader (YOU!) helping children make connections with the main point and their lives. You Connect activities reinforce the main point with fun and engaging activities. BEGIN YOU CONNECT AFTER LARGE GROUP.

SHOWING LOVE
APPLICATION ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
picture cards, leader sheet

SAY: There are so many ways we can follow Jesus. One way we can follow Jesus’ example is by showing love to God and other people. If you can think of a way to show love, give yourself a big hug! ENCOURAGE children to hug themselves.

EXPLAIN each child will be given a few cards with pictures on them. When a picture is called, the children with that picture on the card will STAND UP and FOLLOW your directions.

SHUFFLE the picture cards. PASS OUT all of the picture cards as evenly as possible. ASK the child to your left to STAND UP and CALL OUT a picture from one of their cards. The other child with that picture should also STAND.

READ the corresponding instructions for that picture from the leader sheet. As the standing children complete the action, ENCOURAGE the rest of the group to follow their example and COMPLETE the same action.

COLLECT the picture cards used and CONTINUE until all picture cards have been collected.

SAY: You all did a great job following directions! If you want to follow Jesus as well as you follow directions, you can start by looking for ways to show love to God and others! Say our main point with me.

I can follow Jesus (march in place)
by loving God (hug self)
and others! (point out)

ANIMAL MOVES
GAME ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
7-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES:
animal moves cards

SAY: Sometimes when we aren’t sure what to do, we can follow a leader who knows what they’re doing. In this game, we’re going to pretend to move like different animals and follow each other around our circle!

SHOW children the animal moves cards. EXPLAIN children will see a picture of an animal and a way to move like that animal. Children will perform the action as they follow each other in a circle around the outside of the group.

LAY the animal moves cards picture side up on the floor in the middle of the circle. ASK a child to CHOOSE a card. HELP the child LEAD the rest of the group in a circle around the outside of the rug by moving like the animal on the card. ENCOURAGE the other children to follow the leader.

SAY: You all did a great job following each other like different animals! It’s fun to follow the leader when we play games, but we know the most important person to follow is Jesus! Let’s remember our main point together:

I can follow Jesus (march in place)
by loving God (hug self)
and others! (point out)

FOLLOW ME
COLLECTIBLE ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Follow Me poster, main point eggs, glue, Sharpie marker

HOLD UP the Follow Me poster and SAY: Each weekend you visit Wonder! Clubhouse you can collect main point eggs to add to your poster. These eggs will help remind us Jesus loves everyone! Collect six eggs and bring your poster back to Quest to receive a special prize!

To receive today’s main point egg, children will have to Remember, Think, and Follow! SAY: Let’s REMEMBER … where did Jesus stay behind after his parents left? (the Temple) Let’s THINK … why did Jesus stay behind? (He enjoyed talking to people about God.) Because Jesus knew God and loved God, He knew God would want Him to spend his time showing God’s love to other people. We can be like Jesus by showing love to everyone and by telling God we love Him, too! If you can FOLLOW the example set in our Bible story, let’s say our main point together:

I can follow Jesus (march in place)
by loving God (hug self)
and others! (point out)

GIVE each child a Follow Me poster and main point egg. HELP children GLUE the egg on their poster. WRITE each child’s name on the front of the Follow Me poster on the name space with the Sharpie marker.

SAY: Take your Follow Me poster home and hang it in a place you can see it everyday to help you remember what we learn in Quest and to spend time with Jesus. Today we learned we can follow Jesus by loving God and others! Let’s say our main point together:

I can follow Jesus (march in place)
by loving God (hug self)
and others! (point out)
