KID CONNECT

WHAT IS KID CONNECT?
Kid Connect is all about eGROUP CONNECTIONS: for you to make connections with the kids and for the kids to make connections with each other. Activities are listed in the order they are to be completed. It’s okay if you don’t complete all the activities – some activities will work better for your group than others. Begin Kid Connect when doors open. KID CONNECT ENDS WHEN THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS.

Words in italics, whether on lessons or in handouts, are meant to be said out loud to your group.  Anything not in italics is an instruction that does not necessarily need to be read aloud.

QUEST COLORING PAGE
COLORING ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
5-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
Quest coloring page, crayons, die

PLACE crayons in the center of the circle and GIVE each child a Quest coloring page. INSTRUCT children to color their coloring page. As children color, get to know them by asking questions about their week or what they did that day.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

  • Use a die to determine the crayon color the group will use. Allow children 10-30 seconds to color using the color. Roll the die again and switch crayon colors.
  • Use the number die to determine how many items to color with a certain color crayon. Allow children to color the number of items then roll the die again.
  • Have children take turns rolling the die. Children will compete to be the first to color their coloring page, coloring the number of items rolled each turn.

PLAY as time allows or until all the matches are found.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

  • GROUP: Use the die to determine the number of cards each child will turn over on his or her turn.
  • INDIVIDUAL: On their turn, each child will roll the die to determine how many cards to turn over.

WHO TO FOLLOW

SUGGESTED TIME
8-10 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
candy game pieces, Quest animal stickers

INTRODUCE the series using the series overview:

God gave Jesus a special job to do while He was on Earth. God told Jesus to tell everyone God loves them! Jesus chose twelve special friends and asked them to follow Him and help Him share God’s love. Jesus wants us to follow Him, too!

LAY the memory cards facedown in the center of the group. FLIP OVER two memory cards and introduce yourself. READ aloud this question, “Would you rather follow [insert animal name from one memory card] or  [insert animal name from the other memory card].” and SHARE your answer with the eGroup. TURN over the cards after sharing.

Each child will CHOOSE two memory cards and SHARE his or her name. ASK each child this question: “Would you rather follow [insert animal name from one memory card] or  [insert animal name from the other memory card]. and have the child answer the question. CONTINUE for each child.

AFTER all children are introduced, PASS out a Quest animal sticker to each child. Have each child place it next to their name tag.

SAY: We are the (insert animal name) today! There are two very special rules to remember so we can have the most fun. The rules to follow are:

  1. Be Safe – How can we be safe? (keeping our hands to ourselves, sitting when others are sitting, walking instead of running, following the rules)
  2. Be Kind – How can we be kind? (listening when others are talking, sharing, obeying leaders, sitting on our bottoms so others can see)

SAY: If you can obey our special rules and are ready to have fun then put one hand in the center and repeat after me:

I am (allow response)
a (insert group name) (allow response)
I will (allow response)
be kind and safe! (allow response)
On the count of three everyone, say ‘Go (insert animal name)!’
1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . .
Go (insert group name)!

BIBLE CONNECT

WHAT IS BIBLE CONNECT?

Bible Connect is all about BIBLE CONNECTIONS: for kids to make connections with the Bible and learn to love the Bible! Children will make connections to the Bible in two ways: by hearing and talking about the Bible story and practicing the memory verse. Begin Bible Connect after the Get To Know You activity. AFTER BIBLE CONNECT CHILDREN HEAD TO FREE PLAY AND LARGE GROUP.

PALM SUNDAY

God’s Story For Me Bible, egg sticker

TELL the children we can find true stories about Jesus in God’s book, the Bible!

SHOW and READ the Bible Story on page 409-414 from the God’s Story For Me Bible.

ASK the following questions to review the Bible story. Each time a child answers a question, GIVE the child an egg sticker.

  1. What town were Jesus and His friends traveling to? (Jerusalem)
  2. What animal did Jesus’ friends bring Him to ride on? (a donkey)
  3. Were the people along the road excited or angry Jesus was coming? (excited)
  4. What did the people lay on the ground to welcome Jesus like a king? (branches and coats)
  5. Who were the children at the temple in Jerusalem singing and shouting praises to? (Jesus)

SAY: The people were excited Jesus was coming to Jerusalem so they celebrated and praised Him! While we follow Jesus, we can worship Him just like the children in the Bible story by singing and shouting praises! Say our main point with me.

VERSE VOICES
MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
7 MINUTES

SUPPLIES
die, memory verse egg

SAY: This month we have been learning that following Jesus and living like Him is the best choice we can make! Our Bible verse reminds us to always follow Jesus. It says:

‘Come (spread arms wide)
and follow me,’ (march in place)
Jesus said. (cup hands around mouth)
Matthew 4:19 (open hands like a book)

PRACTICE the memory verse together a few times.

ASK a child to roll the die. REPEAT the verse together in the voice from the chart that matches the color on the die.

EXPLAIN to the group children can recite the verse each week to earn a Memory Verse Egg for their Follow Me poster! ALLOW children an opportunity to RECITE the verse by themselves. GIVE any child who recites the verse by themselves an egg.

TIME TO PRAISE
APPLICATION ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TIME
10 MINUTES

SAY: Praising Jesus is a great way for us to show Him we love Him and we want to follow Him. We praise Jesus together when we’re at church, but there are lots of times you can praise Him on your own, too!

SHOW children the picture clock and LAY OUT the activity cards with the pictures facing up. EXPLAIN how children will think about different times they can praise Jesus by matching the pictures on the clock with the pictures on the activity cards.

POINT to the picture at the top of the picture clock. ASK children to wave their arms high in the air like they are praising Jesus if they see the card which matches that picture. CHOOSE a child to hand you the matching card and READ the instructions on the back. ENCOURAGE children to respond according to the card instructions.

REPEAT by moving clockwise around the picture clock.

SAY: There are so many things we can praise Jesus for every day! Praising Jesus shows Him we are thankful we can follow Him. Say our main point with me.

DIVIDE children into two teams. GIVE each team a game board. ASK one child from the first team to ROLL the die. USE the chart below to determine which pieces to ADD to a game board. GIVE the die to the other team and REPEAT. CONTINUE until one team has filled all of the spaces from Jesus to Jerusalem.

SAY: You prepared the road for Jesus just like the people on the road to Jerusalem! And just like the people in our Bible story praised Jesus, we can give Jesus our praise, too. Let’s say our main point together.
