This Week in Motion Elementary :: I can forgive others.

June series: Forgiveness can be tricky to understand and even harder to show in real life. When people hurt us, our first instinct may be to retaliate or reciprocate, but that’s not what God wants for us. We’re told to show kindness and compassion to others, and in doing so, we can experience real life

I can forgive others.
Joseph Forgives His Brothers • Genesis 37-45

In Genesis 37-45, we read the story of Joseph, who faced rejection, was sold into slavery, and wrongfully imprisoned because his brothers did not like him. Despite their unkindness, Joseph graciously forgave his brothers and even shared his wealth with them, even though they didn’t deserve it. Joseph’s story teaches us God calls us to forgive others, no matter what they have done to us.

Family Discussion Questions:

  1. Why do you think Joseph chose to forgive his brothers after all the bad things they did to him?
  2. Can you think of a time when you forgave someone who hurt you? How did it make you feel afterward?
  3. What are some ways you can show forgiveness to family members and friends in your life?

Engage in everyday moments together this week:

  • Morning time: As your kid starts their day, pray together and ask God to help you be forgive others even when they are unkind to you.
  • Mealtime: At a meal this week, discuss how Joseph might have felt when he forgave his brothers. How you think Joseph’s brothers felt when they were forgiven?
  • Drive time: While on the go, have each person describe a situation, and have others suggest how to show forgiveness in that situation. Turn it into a game!
  • Bedtime: Pray for each other. Ask God for strength and guidance to forgive others as Joseph did.
