Main point: Jesus is born to show the world that God loves us.
Bible story: The Shepherds ● Luke 2:8-20
As a family, read “The Shepherds” (Luke 2:8-20) from the Bible. (CLICK HERE for children’s Bible recommendations.)
After reading the Bible story, discuss these questions together:
- What happened in the Bible story? (When Jesus was born, there were shepherds in a field nearby watching their sheep. When the shepherds heard the good news, they went to visit Jesus. After they saw Jesus, they left and told others the good news of Jesus.)
- Is Jesus God’s Son? (yes)

This week, engage in everyday moments to continue the conversation:
- Morning Time: When you go into your child’s room, cuddle them and say, “Good morning, (child’s name)! We’re getting closer and closer to Christmas day! Christmas is all about celebrating how special Jesus is. Do you remember why Jesus is special? Yes! Jesus is God’s Son!”
- Cuddle Time: Cuddle with your child and pray, “Dear God, help (child’s name) and me get so excited about Your Son, Jesus, that we tell everyone about Him, like the shepherds did. We want everyone to know that You gave us Jesus!”
- Bath Time: Add pom-poms to bath time. Tell your child to pretend they are the shepherd and the pom-poms are sheep. As your child plays, talk about how God sent an angel to tell shepherds that His Son, Jesus, had been born.
- Drive Time: While on the go, look for animals. Talk about how shepherds take care of sheep. God sent an angel to shepherds to tell them Jesus had been born. The shepherds were so excited, they ran to see baby Jesus!
