October series: There are lots of choices we need to make in life, but what do we do when we’re confronted with all of these choices? Do we rush ahead? Or do we pause and let God lead us toward the best way to act? Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit. It’s one of the ways we can tell God is transforming our lives and we’re growing in our faith. When we follow Jesus, God’s Spirit is with us and helps us make the wise choice.

Know when to stop.
Too Much of a Good Thing • Proverbs 25:16
We end the month in Proverbs 25:16 with another one of Solomon’s wise sayings — this time about food: “If you find honey, eat just enough. If you eat too much of it, you will throw up.” Of course, Solomon’s words are true about more than just food. Too much of anything isn’t good for us. But when we trust God to help us, we can choose to stay in control.
Family Discussion Questions:
- What are some things that are harder to show self-control with?
- Why is it hard to know when to stop sometimes?
- What can you do when you are having a hard time showing self-control?
Engage in everyday moments together this week:
- Morning Time: As your kid starts their day, tell them about a time when you saw them exercise self-control with food or a game or spending money. (If it’s good, make sure you don’t tie your compliment to something that may reinforce a negative body image.)
- Mealtime: At a meal this week, have everyone at the table answer this: “Name a game, food, show, etc. that you love, but it’s also something that once you start it’s hard for you to stop.”
- Drive Time: While on the go, ask your kid, “If you could eat one food every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?”
- Bedtime: Pray for each other: “Jesus, help us to practice self-control with things. May a game, food, a collection, or anything else never control us. Help us to know when to stop.”
