This Week in Motion Elementary :: Think before you act.

October series: There are lots of choices we need to make in life, but what do we do when we’re confronted with all of these choices? Do we rush ahead? Or do we pause and let God lead us toward the best way to act? Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit. It’s one of the ways we can tell God is transforming our lives and we’re growing in our faith. When we follow Jesus, God’s Spirit is with us and helps us make the wise choice.

Think before you act.
David Spares Saul’s Life1 Samuel 24

In 1 Samuel 24, David was on the run from his enemy, King Saul. Saul’s jealousy got the best of him, so he set out to kill David. While on the hunt, he entered a cave to relieve himself, which also happened to be the SAME cave where David was hiding! David could have killed Saul, but he chose to trust God and show self-control instead.

Family Discussion Questions:

  1. Have you ever acted first and only stopped to think about it later? What happened?
  2. When was a time you had self-control?
  3. What can you do when you need to stop and think before you act?

Engage in everyday moments together this week:

  • Morning Time: As your kid starts their day, tell them about a time when they made a wise decision and exercised self-control before acting.
  • Mealtime: At a meal this week, have everyone answer this question: “Describe a time when you thought before you acted. What was the situation, and how did that affect what you decided to do?”
  • Drive Time: While on the go, ask your kid, “What is the craziest thing you’ve seen someone do lately — either in person or online?”
  • Bedtime: Pray for each other: “Jesus, help us think about our actions and how they may affect us and others — both in good and bad ways.”
