This Week in Motion Elementary :: Think before you speak.

October series: There are lots of choices we need to make in life, but what do we do when we’re confronted with all of these choices? Do we rush ahead? Or do we pause and let God lead us toward the best way to act? Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit. It’s one of the ways we can tell God is transforming our lives and we’re growing in our faith. When we follow Jesus, God’s Spirit is with us and helps us make the wise choice.

Think before you speak.
Choose Your Words Carefully • Proverbs 12:18

This week, we head to Proverbs 12:18, where Solomon spoke about the power of words. He said, “The words of thoughtless people cut like swords. But the tongue of wise people brings healing.” Thoughtless, mean, and hurtful words can cause harm like a sword! But on the flip side, when we ask God for wisdom and speak intentionally with kindness, love, and care, the words we say can bring healing.

Family Discussion Questions:

  1. Have you ever said something in anger that you didn’t mean? What happened?
  2. What kind words do people say that build you up?
  3. What steps can you take to think before you speak?

Engage in everyday moments together this week:

  • Morning Time: As your kid starts their day, tell them about a time they encouraged you or someone else with their words.
  • Mealtime: At a meal this week, have everyone at the table answer this question: “What has someone said to you that made you feel good? What has someone said to you that made you feel bad?”
  • Drive Time: While on the go, ask your kid, “Who is the most encouraging person you know?”
  • Bedtime: Pray for each other: “Jesus, when we are tempted to react to someone in an angry or hurtful way, help us practice self-control and think before we speak. May we honor You and others in the way we respond.”
